Description

Map printed by Walters, Hughes and Company, Raleigh, N.C. From the book, Early Times in Raleigh Addresses Delivered by the Hon. David L. Swain, 1867. Map shows town lots by number with legend pertaining to lots in left margin. Also designated is a cemetery and quarry. A population table dated 1807 in left margin. Map shows areas sold by the state to raise funds for the enlargement of the Capitol. The Raleigh History collection offers a selection of original documents and materials from the NC State Archives and State Library chronicling the rich history of Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded in 1792 and named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the city was meticulously planned by state senator William Christmas. Despite early challenges such as fires and slow growth, significant milestones like the arrival of the railroad in 1840 and the resilience shown during and after the Civil War have shaped Raleigh's early development. Included in the collection is an array of historical artifacts, such as maps, photographs, land deeds, and published histories.
