EASLEY ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $500,000 IN GRANTS FOR TWO STORM-DAMAGED COMMUNITIES Ahoskie and Pamlico County Receive Grants to Help Rebuild After Hurricane Isabel RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley today announced that the Town of Ahoskie and Pamlico County will each receive a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The funds will be used to create 41 rental units for elderly residents, rehabilitate one home and provide relocation assistance to 1 1 families affected by Hurricane Isabel in fall 2004. "These grants will provide new homes for seniors affected by Hurricane Isabel and will help other families move out of flood-prone areas,” said Easley. “The Community Development Block Grant program is continuing to rebuild communities and improve the quality of life for those affected by last years storms.” The Town of Ahoskie will receive $246,000 in CDBG Housing Development funds for hazardous waste removal from the former Ahoskie High School. The building will then be converted into the Ahoskie School Apartments, which will provide 41 rental units for seniors. Pamlico County will receive $278,582 in Supplemental CDBG Disaster Recovery Funds. The grant will be used to rehabilitate one house and provide relocation assistance to 1 1 other families in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) buyout program. The FEMA program offers to buy homes in areas prone to repeated flooding. When the FEMA purchase price is not sufficient to allow low- and moderate-income families to purchase replacement housing, supplemental CDBG funds are used to help make up the difference. Small Cities CDBG funds are federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that are distributed to eligible local governments.
