INTERNATIONAL PLASMA AWARENESS WEEK
2013
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, October 13-20, 2013, marks International Plasma Awareness Week with observances
throughout the United States and Europe designed to raise global awareness of the need for source plasma
collection, recognize the contributions of plasma donors to saving and improving lives and increase
understanding about lifesaving plasma protein therapies and rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, lifesaving plasma-derived and recombinant blood clotting therapies, collectively known as
plasma protein therapies, are unique biologic products for which no substitute therapies exist; and
WHEREAS, plasma protein therapies are used to treat many conditions, including bleeding disorders,
primary immunodeficiency diseases, Alpha- 1 antitrypsin deficiency and certain rare neurological disorders;
these therapies are also used in emergency and surgical medicine, and have significantly improved quality of
life, patient outcomes, and extended life expectancy for individuals with rare diseases, specifically those with
plasma protein disorders; and
WHEREAS, there are 14 plasma donation centers in North Carolina certified under the International
Quality Plasma Program, where healthy and committed donors provide plasma that is used to manufacture high-
impact, lifesaving therapies;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pat McCrary, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim
October 13-20, 2013, as “INTERNATIONAL PLASMA AWARENESS WEEK” in North Carolina, and
commend its observance to all citizens.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of
North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this second day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand and
thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.
