, Description: William Hill, native of -Rockingham County, was Secretary of
State (1811-1899) and an extensive merchant- owner of a store, blacksmith
shop, and sawmill in 'Raleigh. Hill's varied activities are indicated in
his memo book (1797; 1803-1811) which records payments of gambling debts
and purchases of many Raleigh residents, including Richard Caswell, John
Haywood, Governor Benjamin Williams, and Joseph Gales. Guardianship pa- .
pers for Nathaniel Dunn (1810-1813) include an inventory of William Dunn's
estate and a record of Hill's settlement with Dunn. Papers for Hill's
guardianship of Claudie Gilmore (1814-1820) contain numerous bills and
receipts from early Raleigh merchants.
The correspondence contains a letter from P. Collier, Smithfield,
several letters from Thomas Pound in Kentucky regarding Hill’s land there,
and letters from Samuel and Lucinda Avera in Alabama describing briefly
their trip west, revivals and camp meetings, and conditions in that country
Account books include a merchants memorandum book (1864), a bank book
(1859-1861), general account book (1867)* and cash book
