WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY
2012
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on August 26, 1920, the 19,h Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, granting
all women in the United States the right to vote; and
WHEREAS, in 1971, the United States Congress designated August 26th as Women’s Equality
Day, recognizing the efforts of women to expand voting rights; and
WHEREAS, women contributed to the creation of the United States, yet until these actions, were
not allowed to vote; and
WHEREAS, in 1 848, women organized the Seneca Falls convention to pursue voting rights for
all in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in 1920, all women were granted voting rights in the United States, encouraging
policymakers to address issues important to women and their families, including equal pay and equal
rights; and
WHEREAS, women consistently support elections as well as seek elected offices and appointed
positions, honoring the people who fought for women’s voting rights; and
WHEREAS, women can now use their vote to impact their communities and improve the lives of
young women and girls;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BEVERLY EAVES PERDUE, Governor of the State of North Carolina,
do hereby proclaim August 26, 2012, as "WOMEN’S EQUALITY DAY" in North Carolina, and
commend its observance to all citizens. I further encourage citizens to celebrate Women’s Equality Day by
registering to vote and speaking to policymakers about the needs of their communities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of
North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this sixth day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand and
twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.
