A&T students return from national conference with
Quiz Bowl trophy and president-elect in delegation
HE SAES CHAPTER of
the national society for
Minorities in Agriculture,
Natural Resources and Related
Sciences (MANRRS) brought
home a slew of top honors from
the organizations national con¬
ference in Sacramento, Calif.
One of the most significant
achievements, and believed to
be a first for N.C. A&T, was the
election of Freddrianna McElveen
of Elizabethtown to serve as
2013-14 national undergradu¬
ate president. McElveen, a rising
senior majoring in laboratory
animal science, is also Region
II undergraduate vice-president
and president of the N.C. A&T
chapter of MANRRS. Region II
is composed of MANRRS chap¬
ters in Virginia, the Carolinas,
Georgia and Florida.
Serving as national president
is “a lot of hard work,” McElveen
said, adding “I knew it was
something I wanted to do. I was
ecstatic.”
MANRRS is dedicated to
promoting the academic and
professional development of
members through career fairs,
workshops and networking.
With approximately 1 ,300 indi¬
vidual members from 70 chapters
nationwide, the organization is
seen by agricultural employers
as fertile ground for recruiting
future agricultural professionals,
which is one reason McElveen
thinks every SAES student should
be a member.
“I wish more students
knew what it could do for you.
Anything you need to maneuver
through your professional career,
you have MANRRS,” she said.
Another significant honor
for A&T was winning first place
in the national quiz bowl, gar¬
nering the trophy and title of
MANRRS National Champions
for 2013. Comprising the champi¬
onship team are: Maranda Evans
of Cleveland, a rising senior
majoring in animal sciences;
Shakera Fudge of Syracuse, N.Y.;
a rising senior majoring in labo¬
ratory animal science; Myesha
McElveen of Elizabethtown,
a rising sophomore majoring
in food science (and sister of
Freddrianna McElveen); Mykea
McKnight of Jonesboro, Ga.,
a rising senior majoring in ani¬
mal sciences; Johnny Williams
