Somewhere in the Pacific--(Delayed)--For voluntarily
taking care of and later removing to a safe area wounded
Marines when his unit was forced to withdraw, Marine
Corporal Aubrey E. Haddock, 21, has been awarded the
Bronze Star Medal.
Haddock, of Box 2, Method, N.C., was engaged in
his first campaign--the battle for Iwo Jima. He was decorated
by Major General Clifton B. Cates, Commanding Fourth Marine
Division, at a ceremony in which more than 4,000 troops
passed in review.
Haddock, son of R.O. Haddock, of the Method address,
was graduated from Cary High School in 1943. He was a
member of the football and basketball teams.
His citation read, in part:
"...On March 6...his organization was forced to
withdraw from an area combed by intense enemy machine gun
and mortar fire and several wounded members were left in
the vacated area. Haddock, along with two others from his
platoon, voluntarily remained in the original position with
the casualties.
"Consistently exposing himself to the hostile
barrage, he treated the wounded men and assisted in
