EXPLORING THE LIVING HISTORY CLASSROOM Black History - It's Not Just for February Anymore Black History Month, celebrated each year in February, is an ideal time to talk with students about the role of African Americans in our national, state, and local history. But so is just about any other month of the year! Black history (or for that matter the history of all the many cultural groups that are part of the American fabric) belongs in the everyday curriculum as well. African Americans are part and parcel of the story of our great nation, and they have contributed in numerous ways both large and small to the creation of the America in which we live today. In other words - don't wait until February to celebrate black history! If we look with an open mind, the story of African Americans can be found on almost any page of our country's past. The story of African Americans in our nation's history is a fascinating topic, but it can also be uncomfortable or intimidating - for teachers and students alike - to bring up in the classroom.
