An Aft to raife a revenue for the payment of. the civil lift and contingent charges of go¬
vernment for the year one' thoufand feven hundred and ninety-five.
I. TJE it enafted by the General Affembly of the ft ate of North-Carolina, and it is
D hereby enafted by- the authority of the fame, That for the year one thoufand fe- Tax for 1755:
ven hundred and ninety-five, a tax of eight pence on every hundred acres of land in
this Hate, arid a tax of two (hillings on every hundred pounds value of town lots with
their improvements, and a tax of two (hillings on every poll, (hall be levied, collefted
and accounted lor, in the manner direfted by theleveral aftsof Affembly for thofe cafes
- made and provided.
II. And be it further enafted, That a tax on all ftud-horfes within this date, of the 0n

one-fourth part of the fum which the owner of fuch ftud-horfe (hall alk and receive.for ei.
the feafonof one mare to fuch ftud-horfe, (liall .be levied, collefted and accounted for
in the fame manner that fuch taxes have been heretofore levied, collefted and accounted
for.
III. And be it further enafted, That no firtking-fund tax be collefted for. the year one No finking-

An Aft to prevent the further importation and bringing of slaves and indented fervants
of colour into this ] late .
I. T>E it enafted by the General Affembly of the ft ate of North -Carolina, and it is No (lave, See.
, xj hereby enafted by . the authority of the fame, That from and after the firft day to be import-
of May next, no (lave or indented fervant of colour (hall be imported or brought into A^c’nafter
this ftate by' land or water ; nor (hall any (lave or indented fervant of colour, whqinay 1 1 ay next'
be imported or brought contrary to the intent and meaning of this aft, be bought/ fold
-or hired by any perfon whatever.
II. Be it further enafted by the authority aforefaid, That every perfon importing or PenaIty for
bringing (laves or indented fervants of colour into this date after the faid firft day, of. Slay importing, &c
next, by land or water, contrary to the provilions of, this aft, (liall forfeit and pay the
fum of one hundred pounds for each and every (lave or indented fervant of colour fo
imported or brought. And every perfon who (hall knowingly fell, buy or hire fuch On felling,
(lave or indented fervant of colour, (hall in like manner forfeit and pay the fum ofb“>'u,S> &c‘
one hundred pounds for each and every (lave or fervant of colour fo fold, bought or
hired : One moiety of which forfeiture lliall be to the ufe of the ftate, and, the other
moiety to him or them who fliall fue for the fame; to be recovered in the name of the
Governor for the time being, by aftion of debt, in any of the iuperior courts of law in

which if they dr any of them negleft to do, it (hall be deemed a mifdemeanor in office.
And any officer who lliall fail, negleft or refufe, upon application, to perform the duties ^
