Minutes of an Interracial Meeting held in the Oxford
Woman's Club Building, January, 12, 1933
Mr. L. R. Reynolds, the Governor's representative in inter
racial work, with the assistance of Mr. A. H. Powell and Dr.
G. C. Shaw invited a group of citizens of Oxford to a meeting
in the Oxford Woman's Club Building to talk over interracial
matters. This meeting was held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Januray 12,
1933. Mr. A. H. Powell presided and C. G. Credle was asked to
be secretary. The following citizens were present: Mr. L. R.
Reynolds, Dr. N. C. Newbold, Rev. T. G. Vickers, Dr. N. C. Daniel,
Rev. R. R. McCulloch, W. M. Hicks, E. G. Moss, J. W. Horner, B. K.
Lassiter, Dr. B. K. Hayes, J. F. Webb, J. A. Williams, B. W. Parham,
J. Robt. Wood, O. B. Breedlove, C. K. Proctor, Dr. G. C. Shaw,
H. P. Cheatham, William Ridley, James W. Hall, Alex. Peace and
Dr. E. E. Toney.
Mr. Reynolds made a talk about interaccial work and explained
the information which will be contained in the Interracial Handbook
which is in process of preparation. When completed there will be
a copy for each county in the state.
Dr. N. C. Newbold, Director of Negro Education in North
Carolina, stated that the strongest desire of the colored people
is a good school for their children. Some of the needs of Negro
education pointed out by Mr. Newbold are as follows: 1. More
school rooms, 2. Better trained teachers, 3. Extended terms for
colored children in about six hundred districts.
Dr. G. C. Shaw stated that education is the surest way of
making good colored citizens. Dr. Shaw seemed to think that the
colored people had not had exactly a fair show in education but
he stated that the colored people were equally to blame as the
white.
Dr. Toney said that the fact that leading white people are
studying their problems gives the Negroes hope and courage. Some
of the needs of the Negroes in Granville County as seen by Dr.
Toney are: a farm demonstrator and a supervisor or welfare officer
whose time will be devoted to raising the standards of living
among colored people.
Mr. C. K. Proctor made the point that cultured white people
help raise the standard of living of colored people.
Short talks were made by most of the others that were present.
It seemed to be the opinion of all present that this was a very
helpful meeting. Mr. A. H. Powell and Dr. G. C. Shaw were elected
as chairmen to call another meeting whenever they saw fit.
C. G. Credle, Secretary
