Description: Herbert Hutchinson Brimley ( I86l-19h6), native of Willington
(near Bedford) , England, immigrated to the United States in 1880 and
settled in Raleigh, North Carolina. He and a brother, C. S. Brimley,
established a successful taxidermy business. In 189U H. H. was
employed at the State Museum, a small division of the Department of
Agriculture. The following year he was appointed director, holding
that position until his retirement in 1937* Brimley co-authored two
books — one on the birds and the other on the fish of North Carolina©
Receipted bills, mainly from Raleigh merchants, for purchases
of the necessities and extras of life make up the major portion of the
collection. Letters cover a brief period from November 1901 to
December, 1903. These are copies Brimley wrote relative to the
formation of a State society of individuals interested in scientific
subjects and their replies; correspondents include Gilbert Pearson,
Dr. Hubert A. Royster, and F. A. Sondley. Several letters are from
Agricultural Commissioner S. L. Patterson relative to office matters.
One from Brimley to W. L. Poteat, Wake Forest College, calls his •
attention to the fact that the State Museum was the first depository
of historical relics prior to the establishment of the Hall of History*
Typescripts include: "Old Time Whaling in North Carolina," a
radio talk given by Brimley, June 25,
1933»
six pages; and one entitled
"H. H. Brimley, North Carolina Naturalist: Selections from His Writings,"
edited by Eugene P. Odum. The latter was published by the University
of North Carolina Press in 19b9*
