Description: Daphne King Carroway (1881-1933) was bom in Wilson, North
Carolina but later moved to Greensboro, where she completed high school
and entered the State Normal School (Woman* s ; College of the University
of North Carolina) and graduated in 1902. Her earliest experiences in
teaching were at the Presbyterian' s Orphan' sjHcrae, Barium Springs, North
Carolina, in the Wilson County schools, and later in Wake County and in
Warrenton, including work instructing in summer schools and training
institutes. She also worked with the Wilson 'County Health Department
and Junior Red Cross. Through her teaching &ie became interested in
story telling. Known as the "Dixie Story Lady," she achieved a wide
reputation and served for four years as president of the National Story
Teller's League. For several years she was associated with the
Radcliffe Chatauqua, Washington, D. C., planning programs and arranging
tours. In 1933 she returned to North Carolina to teach at Wakelon
School in Zebulon. 1

of Public Instruction and for membership in the UDC and the DARj there
are also diplomas for courses at Atlantic Christian College, the
University of Tennessee, and the State Normal' and Industrial School*
