Student Success, Community-Focused ANNUAL REPORT 2012–2013 Our dedication. Your journey. Passion Mission Davidson County Community College develops minds, inspires imaginations and prepares students for enhanced career and educational opportunities within a changing global environment. Values Vision The College is a strong and effective organization capable of addressing emerging needs. Mutual trust pervades the campus climate. Student Success, Community- Focused Strategic Plan 2013–2016 DCCC introduced a new strategic plan in June for the years 2013–2016. The plan reinforced the College’s current mission, values and vision, reviewed relevant trends and formulated three strategic goals: Strategic Goal #1 – Success through Completion Davidson County Community College will cultivate and engage in practices that foster attainment of high-quality credentials that contribute to meaningful employment or successful transfer. Strategic Goal #2 – Excellence in Teaching and Learning The College will support the pursuit of academic excellence in traditional and emerging learning environments and the adoption of meaningful student support practices. As we celebrate the past, we also look to DCCC’s future and the impact we can have going forward. Everyone here is student-focused — we want to inspire students to pursue their passions through education for another 50 years and beyond. “ ” — Dr. Mary Rittling, President of DCCC Halloween DCCC’s 50th Anniversary year, which kicked off in January 2013, has been a time for remembering the past and looking ahead to the future, a future built on the dreams of those who saw the promise of a stronger economy and enhanced opportunities for individuals through higher education. Lexington’s Felix Gee and Thomasville’s Doak Finch led the charge in the early 1960s to make the Davidson County Industrial Education Center a reality. The two cities’ chambers of commerce, the city and county governments, the local school boards, and other local leaders and supporters then came together as champions for education. In 1965, the Davidson County Community College. Today, DCCC serves approximately 16,000 students each year on the Davidson and Davie campuses and at three satellite centers, offering more than 50 curriculum programs. And the future holds the promise of more expansion, including additional educational programs and services and physical expansion on the new Link Campus. The yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration has brought notable speakers to campus, showcased the College’s remarkable journey and many of the people who shaped it, and provided opportunities to celebrate and look to the future. The trustees paid tribute to her multitude of accomplishments over the past 10 years, which have opened doors for DCCC and moved us into a leadership position among community colleges. “ ” — Beth Parrott, Chair of DCCC Board of Trustees When the DCCC Board of Trustees announced in August that the College’s Conference Center would be named in honor of President Mary E. Rittling, they were naming a building that has become a hallmark of DCCC’s community spirit. The recently-named Mary E. Rittling Conference Center has been in near constant use since College and community leaders cut the ribbon four years ago. Groups internal and external to campus rely heavily on its event space for meetings, performances and even formal gatherings. future have also taken place there, including the announcements of the Link Campus gift and Christine Harris bequest, in addition to a celebratory joint announcement with East Carolina University regarding the dental clinic now under construction on the Davidson Campus. The centrality of the Conference Center to DCCC decision to name the building for its third president, who arrived at DCCC in August 2003. The Lexington, Thomasville and Davie education centers have all opened under Rittling’s leadership, and campus life has thrived, especially with the return of athletics. In 2012, Rittling was named North Carolina Community College President of the Year and in 2013, she was named to the Board of the American Association of Community Colleges, providing leadership for thousands across the country. Student Success, Community-Focused With Murals Lighting Up Our View DCCC has not only left a colorful impression on the community but on its own campus as well, thanks to the help of artists from different parts of the world. In October 2012, several artists from the Dominican Republic left colorful artwork in Davidson County through their mural project, “Roots: Social Histories through Murals.” The project was a collaborative effort between DCCC and the Global Leadership Institute, which received funding through the National Endowment for the Arts. Héctor Blanco, Máximo Ceballo, Ezequiel Soto, Carlos Veras and Freddy Alcántara Ramírez, worked tirelessly with students from DCCC, instructors and area artists to create colorful pictorial messages that capture the history of Davidson County. The elaborate paintings depicted not only the history of Davidson County, but a vision toward the future at two sites – DCCC’s Uptown Lexington Education Center on East First Street and the Thomasville Education Center on Randolph Street. Macedonian artist Voskresija Andreevska completed a third mural project in the Learning Commons on the Davidson Campus thanks to organization in Lexington that works to provide community arts services. Putnam, former CEO of Southwest Airlines and former CEO of Braniff International, is an author, speaker and adviser on business issues, change, leadership and ethics. Burrus, CEO of Burrus Research, a research advancements in technology, is considered one of the world’s leading futurists on global trends and innovation. The two were on campus as part of DCCC’s 50th Anniversary celebration and were evidence of the College’s commitment to business growth. Just a month later, when “Jungle” Jack Hanna – otherwise known as America’s favorite zookeeper – visited DCCC, he was so impressed with the College’s Zoo and Aquarium Science Program that he offered his support. Hanna currently serves as director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio and spends his time promoting wildlife conservation. The coursework blends academics with the game changing element of hands-on experiences under the direct supervision of professional zookeepers and curators. Being recognized is exciting and provides validation that our work is valuable and moving us in the right direction. “ ” — Christy Forrest, Dean of the School of Foundational Studies and Academic Support November 2012 was an exciting time at DCCC. The College was recognized for being involved in two major initiatives aimed at helping students degrees — Achieving the Dream and Completion by Design. DCCC was one of 14 institutions designated as a 2012 Leaders College by the Achieving the Dream initiative, thanks to the College’s efforts in program improvements, services and more that are all guided by a student-centered vision focused on equity and excellence. DCCC was also selected along with several other community colleges in North Carolina to participate in the Completion by Design program – a $4.3 million grant funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program is colleges in identifying strategies to lead students toward graduation. Finally, this year, the College renewed its commitment to young men of color through an alignment with the North Carolina Community College Minority Male Mentoring Program, which is designed to support the success and educational and professional aspirations of the young men involved. DCCC has always been committed to the success of students, but these initiatives have helped put in place key strategies to achieve them. It’s important for students to visualize a path and future where they have opportunities for them. These programs provide extensive hands-on learning that is integrated into traditional class formats so students are prepared for the industry upon graduation. “ ” — Pamela Shortt, Associate Dean of the School of Business, Engineering and Technical Studies Student Success, Community-Focused With Hands-on Learning Opportunities members in the cosmetology or esthetics labs getting haircuts or facials. It’s not an unusual sight on campus; in fact, it’s part of an on-campus learning experience that allows students to get real-world practice on actual clients. It’s just one of many programs available that provides both on- and off-campus learning experiences that give students hands-on opportunities to prepare them for life after college. Many DCCC programs on campus offered internships this year. Faculty in paralegal studies, nursing, zoo and aquarium science, advanced manufacturing and many more areas partner with local employers to offer a variety of internships and clinical experiences so that students can practice what they’ve learned in the classroom. The work they perform is serve. and hospitals, and zoo and wildlife centers are just some of the organizations that provided valuable real-world opportunities to complement programming for DCCC students during the year. The variety of internships and hands-on experiences on campus and in the community (including those offered through our mobile lab units) often lead to employment opportunities. The skills students learn while at DCCC are valuable and can easily be transferred into real careers. Thanks to the STEM Camp, held in July on the Davidson Campus, these young people found that education can be both enjoyable and exciting. With a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, students were engaged with LEGO Mindstorm robots, learning how to build, operate and program the robots to complete challenges that mimic projects industries complete in the real world. The camp event ended with a competition to put skills to the test, while parents looked on. Other camps held during the summer included the “Great Explorer’s Camp” for children in kindergarten through second grade that explored themes such as nutrition, biology, technology, literacy, science and more. and third-graders with science, technology, engineering and math by offering unique experiments like atomic insta-worms, saltwater monster trucks and more. DCCC also held a 12th grades the chance to learn basic and elite volleyball skills. We live in an economy that is technology driven; therefore, we can expect STEM-related occupations to grow. Each year, faculty and staff are recognized for achieving goals, attending national conferences and furthering their own educations. Biology instructor Dana Jafroodi, for instance, earned this year’s Faculty Excellence Award and was recognized at a faculty and staff get-together in mid-August. The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development also recognized her achievement. In April, Kim Sepich, vice president for student affairs, was selected as a 2013 Women in Business honoree by the Triad Business Journal. and administrative services, took home the area’s Financial Executives of the Year Community Service award, in part due to his leadership role at DCCC and his dedication to community organizations. Other employees participated in staff development activities, published articles and presented at community events and national conferences, including the On Course National Conference in California. Faculty and staff have also continued to make strides in not only improving DCCC, but by improving their own knowledge by earning higher own goals then transfers back to the College, as they continue to help programs grow and change with the times. All this, and the faculty and staff were effort through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge of other countries and cultures through regular campus events, travel and classroom study. Many of our students took time to learn from six international students who spent the 2012- 2013 academic year living in Lexington while attending DCCC as part of the Community College Initiative Program and the Fulbright Commission. Students from Costa Rica, Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan and South Africa studied at DCCC. Throughout the year, they shared their culture and values with fellow students at different events, including the “Living Local – Thinking Global International Celebration.” The event featured traditional clothing, food, artifacts, photos, instrumental music and more. DCCC’s students and faculty also traveled to Brazil, China and Peru. The trips were marked with eye-opening activities, such as helping repair bamboo homes in Peru, volunteering at life in some of the largest international business centers in the world. DCCC’s recent Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants, Jucilea Oliveira (2012- 2013) and Ana Paula Rezende de Mello (2013- 2014), are both from Brazil and are teachers of Portuguese. www.davidsonccc.edu I want to learn more about the American culture… Being in the South is amazing. When people think of America, they picture places like New York or California. People don’t know about other places (in the U.S.). Student Success, Community-Focused With Student and Alumni Service Lending a hand or providing a home-cooked meal to someone in need often provides a life lesson not found in textbooks. DCCC students extended their learning in class by getting out into the community and taking part in many initiatives during the year that helped the hungry, sick and less fortunate. In the fall, for instance, the Association of Nursing Students opened their hearts by offering food and fellowship with a Thanksgiving dinner to individuals from Crisis Ministries, a shelter in Lexington. Not only did the nursing students dedicate time and hard work toward the effort, but many local businesses partnered to help provide lunch and supplies for the guests. The event provided a warm holiday meal, and also introduced many to a college campus Students, faculty, staff and alumni got involved in other initiatives as well during the year, such as blood drives, sponsored by the Student Government Association. A total of 189 pints of blood were donated on our campus during the 2012-2013 academic year. One pint of blood saves 3 lives, so the DCCC community helped to save 567 lives during the academic year. The DCCC Alumni Association also helped to make the holiday season a little brighter for children by collecting 210 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program. The entire campus and community took part in the initiative, which the Association hopes to make an annual event. To know that a child received a toy for the holidays is really meaningful to all of us — a gift to us, really. “ ” — Michael McGee, President of DCCC Alumni Association Student Success, Community-Focused With Compelling Cultural Events Renowned violinist Daniel D. of New York’s Julliard School of Music captivated students with a musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in February. His visit was just one of the many cultural events held on campus throughout the year that brings people together to learn about new ideas, traditions and values. The year was marked with accomplished musicians, as well as movies, plays, historical accounts and more. If fact, sights and sounds from across the globe graced the campus throughout the year. New York guitarist David Burgess brought the sounds of Brazil. The musical group Barynya brought a little bit of Russia with a music and dance performance. Students also viewed an inspirational documentary about injustices in Argentina and they had an opportunity to learn fascinating details about the sunken Titanic from a DCCC faculty member who was a part of the 1998 research and recovery expedition. DCCC also celebrated many milestones throughout the year, with events that highlighted Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Students got a little taste of American culture thanks to a Mark Twain impersonator who shared Twain’s wit and wisdom, as well as “Songs and Spirituals from the American Experience” — an evening of music presented by accomplished opera performer Cheryse McLeod Lewis. Passion Mission Davidson County Community College develops minds, inspires imaginations and prepares students for enhanced career and educational opportunities within a changing global environment. Student Success, Community- Focused Strategic Plan 2013–2016 DCCC introduced a new strategic plan in June for the years 2013–2016. The plan reinforced the College’s current mission, values and vision, reviewed relevant trends and formulated three strategic goals: Strategic Goal #1 – Success through Completion Davidson County Community College will cultivate and engage in practices that foster attainment of high-quality credentials that contribute to meaningful employment or successful transfer. As we celebrate the past, we also look to DCCC’s future and the impact we can have going forward. Everyone here is student-focused — we want to inspire students to pursue their passions through education for another 50 years and beyond. “ ” — Dr. Mary Rittling, President of DCCC Halloween DCCC’s 50th Anniversary year, which kicked off in January 2013, has been a time for remembering the past and looking ahead to the future, a future built on the dreams of those who saw the promise of a stronger economy and enhanced opportunities for individuals through higher education. Lexington’s Felix Gee and Thomasville’s Doak Finch led the charge in the early 1960s to make the Davidson County Industrial Education Center a reality. The two cities’ chambers of commerce, the city and county governments, the local school boards, and other local leaders and supporters then came together as champions for education. In 1965, the Davidson County Community College. Today, DCCC serves approximately 16,000 students each year on the Davidson and Davie campuses and at three satellite centers, offering more than 50 curriculum programs. And the future holds the promise of more expansion, including additional educational programs and services and physical expansion on the new Link Campus. The yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration has brought notable speakers to campus, showcased the College’s remarkable journey and many of the people who shaped it, and provided opportunities to celebrate and look to the future. The trustees paid tribute to her multitude of accomplishments over the past 10 years, which have opened doors for DCCC and moved us into a leadership position among community colleges. “ ” — Beth Parrott, Chair of DCCC Board of Trustees When the DCCC Board of Trustees announced in August that the College’s Conference Center would be named in honor of President Mary E. Rittling, they were naming a building that has become a hallmark of DCCC’s community spirit. The recently-named Mary E. Rittling Conference Center has been in near constant use since College and community leaders cut the ribbon four years ago. Groups internal and external to campus rely heavily on its event space for meetings, performances and even formal gatherings. future have also taken place there, including the announcements of the Link Campus gift and Christine Harris bequest, in addition to a celebratory joint announcement with East Carolina University regarding the dental clinic now under construction on the Davidson Campus. The centrality of the Conference Center to DCCC decision to name the building for its third president, who arrived at DCCC in August 2003. The Lexington, Thomasville and Davie education centers have all opened under Rittling’s leadership, and campus life has thrived, especially with the return of athletics. In 2012, Rittling was named North Carolina Community College President of the Year and in 2013, she was named to the Board of the American Association of Community Colleges, providing leadership for thousands across the country. Student Success, Community-Focused With Murals Lighting Up Our View DCCC has not only left a colorful impression on the community but on its own campus as well, thanks to the help of artists from different parts of the world. In October 2012, several artists from the Dominican Republic left colorful artwork in Davidson County through their mural project, “Roots: Social Histories through Murals.” The project was a collaborative effort between DCCC and the Global Leadership Institute, which received funding through the National Endowment for the Arts. Héctor Blanco, Máximo Ceballo, Ezequiel Soto, Carlos Veras and Freddy Alcántara Ramírez, worked tirelessly with students from DCCC, instructors and area artists to create colorful pictorial messages that capture the history of Davidson County. The elaborate paintings depicted not only the history of Davidson County, but a vision toward the future at two sites – DCCC’s Uptown Lexington Education Center on East First Street and the Thomasville Education Center on Randolph Street. Macedonian artist Voskresija Andreevska completed a third mural project in the Learning Commons on the Davidson Campus thanks to organization in Lexington that works to provide community arts services. Putnam, former CEO of Southwest Airlines and former CEO of Braniff International, is an author, speaker and adviser on business issues, change, leadership and ethics. Burrus, CEO of Burrus Research, a research advancements in technology, is considered one of the world’s leading futurists on global trends and innovation. The two were on campus as part of DCCC’s 50th Anniversary celebration and were evidence of the College’s commitment to business growth. Just a month later, when “Jungle” Jack Hanna – otherwise known as America’s favorite zookeeper – visited DCCC, he was so impressed with the College’s Zoo and Aquarium Science Program that he offered his support. Hanna currently serves as director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio and spends his time promoting wildlife conservation. The coursework blends academics with the game changing element of hands-on experiences under the direct supervision of professional zookeepers and curators. Being recognized is exciting and provides validation that our work is valuable and moving us in the right direction. “ ” — Christy Forrest, Dean of the School of Foundational Studies and Academic Support November 2012 was an exciting time at DCCC. The College was recognized for being involved in two major initiatives aimed at helping students degrees — Achieving the Dream and Completion by Design. DCCC was one of 14 institutions designated as a 2012 Leaders College by the Achieving the Dream initiative, thanks to the College’s efforts in program improvements, services and more that are all guided by a student-centered vision focused on equity and excellence. DCCC was also selected along with several other community colleges in North Carolina to participate in the Completion by Design program – a $4.3 million grant funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program is colleges in identifying strategies to lead students toward graduation. Finally, this year, the College renewed its commitment to young men of color through an alignment with the North Carolina Community College Minority Male Mentoring Program, which is designed to support the success and educational and professional aspirations of the young men involved. DCCC has always been committed to the success of students, but these initiatives have helped put in place key strategies to achieve them. It’s important for students to visualize a path and future where they have opportunities for them. These programs provide extensive hands-on learning that is integrated into traditional class formats so students are prepared for the industry upon graduation. “ ” — Pamela Shortt, Associate Dean of the School of Business, Engineering and Technical Studies Student Success, Community-Focused With Hands-on Learning Opportunities members in the cosmetology or esthetics labs getting haircuts or facials. It’s not an unusual sight on campus; in fact, it’s part of an on-campus learning experience that allows students to get real-world practice on actual clients. It’s just one of many programs available that provides both on- and off-campus learning experiences that give students hands-on opportunities to prepare them for life after college. Many DCCC programs on campus offered internships this year. Faculty in paralegal studies, nursing, zoo and aquarium science, advanced manufacturing and many more areas partner with local employers to offer a variety of internships and clinical experiences so that students can practice what they’ve learned in the classroom. The work they perform is serve. and hospitals, and zoo and wildlife centers are just some of the organizations that provided valuable real-world opportunities to complement programming for DCCC students during the year. The variety of internships and hands-on experiences on campus and in the community (including those offered through our mobile lab units) often lead to employment opportunities. The skills students learn while at DCCC are valuable and can easily be transferred into real careers. Thanks to the STEM Camp, held in July on the Davidson Campus, these young people found that education can be both enjoyable and exciting. With a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, students were engaged with LEGO Mindstorm robots, learning how to build, operate and program the robots to complete challenges that mimic projects industries complete in the real world. The camp event ended with a competition to put skills to the test, while parents looked on. Other camps held during the summer included the “Great Explorer’s Camp” for children in kindergarten through second grade that explored themes such as nutrition, biology, technology, literacy, science and more. and third-graders with science, technology, engineering and math by offering unique experiments like atomic insta-worms, saltwater monster trucks and more. DCCC also held a 12th grades the chance to learn basic and elite volleyball skills. Each year, faculty and staff are recognized for achieving goals, attending national conferences and furthering their own educations. Biology instructor Dana Jafroodi, for instance, earned this year’s Faculty Excellence Award and was recognized at a faculty and staff get-together in mid-August. The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development also recognized her achievement. In April, Kim Sepich, vice president for student affairs, was selected as a 2013 Women in Business honoree by the Triad Business Journal. and administrative services, took home the area’s Financial Executives of the Year Community Service award, in part due to his leadership role at DCCC and his dedication to community organizations. Other employees participated in staff development activities, published articles and presented at community events and national conferences, including the On Course National Conference in California. Faculty and staff have also continued to make strides in not only improving DCCC, but by improving their own knowledge by earning higher own goals then transfers back to the College, as they continue to help programs grow and change with the times. All this, and the faculty and staff were effort through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge of other countries and cultures through regular campus events, travel and classroom study. Many of our students took time to learn from six international students who spent the 2012- 2013 academic year living in Lexington while attending DCCC as part of the Community College Initiative Program and the Fulbright Commission. Students from Costa Rica, Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan and South Africa studied at DCCC. Throughout the year, they shared their culture and values with fellow students at different events, including the “Living Local – Thinking Global International Celebration.” The event featured traditional clothing, food, artifacts, photos, instrumental music and more. DCCC’s students and faculty also traveled to Brazil, China and Peru. The trips were marked with eye-opening activities, such as helping repair bamboo homes in Peru, volunteering at life in some of the largest international business centers in the world. DCCC’s recent Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants, Jucilea Oliveira (2012- 2013) and Ana Paula Rezende de Mello (2013- 2014), are both from Brazil and are teachers of Portuguese. www.davidsonccc.edu I want to learn more about the American culture… Being in the South is amazing. Student Success, Community-Focused With Student and Alumni Service Lending a hand or providing a home-cooked meal to someone in need often provides a life lesson not found in textbooks. DCCC students extended their learning in class by getting out into the community and taking part in many initiatives during the year that helped the hungry, sick and less fortunate. In the fall, for instance, the Association of Nursing Students opened their hearts by offering food and fellowship with a Thanksgiving dinner to individuals from Crisis Ministries, a shelter in Lexington. Not only did the nursing students dedicate time and hard work toward the effort, but many local businesses partnered to help provide lunch and supplies for the guests. The event provided a warm holiday meal, and also introduced many to a college campus Students, faculty, staff and alumni got involved in other initiatives as well during the year, such as blood drives, sponsored by the Student Government Association. A total of 189 pints of blood were donated on our campus during the 2012-2013 academic year. One pint of blood saves 3 lives, so the DCCC community helped to save 567 lives during the academic year. The DCCC Alumni Association also helped to make the holiday season a little brighter for children by collecting 210 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve “Toys for Tots” program. The entire campus and community took part in the initiative, which the Association hopes to make an annual event. To know that a child received a toy for the holidays is really meaningful to all of us — a gift to us, really. “ ” — Michael McGee, President of DCCC Alumni Association Student Success, Community-Focused With Compelling Cultural Events Renowned violinist Daniel D. of New York’s Julliard School of Music captivated students with a musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in February. His visit was just one of the many cultural events held on campus throughout the year that brings people together to learn about new ideas, traditions and values. The year was marked with accomplished musicians, as well as movies, plays, historical accounts and more. If fact, sights and sounds from across the globe graced the campus throughout the year. New York guitarist David Burgess brought the sounds of Brazil. The musical group Barynya brought a little bit of Russia with a music and dance performance. Students also viewed an inspirational documentary about injustices in Argentina and they had an opportunity to learn fascinating details about the sunken Titanic from a DCCC faculty member who was a part of the 1998 research and recovery expedition. DCCC also celebrated many milestones throughout the year, with events that highlighted Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Students got a little taste of American culture thanks to a Mark Twain impersonator who shared Twain’s wit and wisdom, as well as “Songs and Spirituals from the American Experience” — an evening of music presented by accomplished opera performer Cheryse McLeod Lewis.
