I have sccn that little badge three hundred miles from Berea,

I land, Beaufort ounty, outh Carolina, half way between
Charle ton and a\'annah.
BASKET MAKING, PENN NORMAL SCHOOL
The i land has a population of seven thousand Negroes and
fifty whites. A majority of the egroes own and farm their own
land, and every family represented in the school owns some land,
varying from one quarter of an acre to one hundred acres.
IN THE GARDEN, PENN NORMAL SCHOOL
The courses of work in the school are planned according to the
community, life of the island people, and fit the student to be of
the greatest value to his own people. Penn school is also training
teachers for the county schools. Of the seven grades in the
school the four lower ones have regular lessons in nature study
and garden work. In addition to the u ual elementary subjects,
Penn School teaches agriculture, carpentry, cooking, basketry.
ewing, and hygiene. The largest number in the several
classes are in nature study, agriculture, and sewing.
Miss Ro a B. Cooley, in January, 1908, succeeded Miss
Ellen Murray, deceased, one of the founder, as principal of
Penn School. Mr. Holli B. Frissell, principal of Hampton
Institute, Hampton, Va., is chairman of the Board of Trustee .
Th school has eight principal building in addition to a carpenter
shop and a barn. The annual expen es are $10,000, ecure.d
from voluntary contribution. The property of the school IS
valued at $79,000. There were 18 teachers and 263 stndent
in 1908.
