(MRS. CHARLES) HARRIOT S. RANKIN. Recording Secretary. (MRS. G. V.) ANNE PATTERSON, President. 22 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting REPORTS OF OFFICERS REPORT OF PRESIDENT As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of the North Carolina Synod I beg leave to submit the following report : In presenting the seventeenth Annual Report of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Synod of North Carolina, grateful acknowledge-ment of God's blessing and guidance in the progress of the work is made and keen appreciation of the splendid work done by the women of the Synodical is expressed. With much to encourage us, we still have much to do and many things to cause us serious thought. We have eight new Auxiliaries with twenty more than last year counting every woman on church roll. There are 954 more members with 37 more Silver Seal Circles and seven more Gold Seal Circles. There is a large increase in Prayer Calendar, Church papers and Survey subscriptions. There is a gratifying increase in family altars. Too much emphasis cannot be put on this sacred institution. The growth in Bible study is good, but less than half of the women of the Church are taking part in this study. Reports show a small increase in Tithers. There was an increase in Mission Study Classes and Stewardship Classes. The financial report shows an increase in Miscellaneous Contribu-tions, but a serious decrease in Denominational Benevolences. Let us be more loyal to the causes of the Church and bring our gifts up this year. May we all give more sacrificially. Christian Social Service has increased during the year and much good has been done through this phase of the work. Through the efforts and generosity of Mrs. Cameron Morrison, N. C. Unit Mission Court has been built this year. Interest in White Cross Work has grown. Fourteen more new Auxiliaries took part in this service of love. The Young People's Conference was a decided success. There is no greater responsibility for us than that of safeguarding our young people. The Conference for Negro Women, under the leadership of Miss Margaret Rankin, was one of the best ever held in interest and results. The forty-three Group Conferences and Efficiency Conferences held during the year have done much to train the women in the work. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 23 Special Synodical work done by the nine Presbyterials included furnishing a room on Synodical Hall, in Assembly Inn, Montreat, at a cost of $350.00; raising a thousand-dollar scholarship in memory of Mrs. Jackson Johnson, first President of the North Carolina Synodi-cal, and furnishing linens, bedding, china, kitchen utensils, and many other necessary accessories for North Carolina Unit Mission Court. Wilmington Presbyterial furnished one of the apartments of North Carolina Unit in memory of Mrs. Worth. It has been a year teeming with interest for your President. While the duties have been arduous, the personal gain has far sur-passed the demands upon time, thought, and strength. Mistakes have been made and there have been failures, but they have not been from the heart for her constant wish and prayer has been for the best interest of the Synodical. It was with regret that the Interdenominational Meeting was missed. No notice was received of the meeting and it was too late when inquiry was made. Nevertheless, your President is most grate-ful for your willingness to send her. Your President visited Wilmington, Albemarle, Fayetteville, Granville, Orange, Concord, Mecklenburg, and Kings Mountain Pres-byterials and was delighted and wonderfully helped through fellow-ship and vision received of the work as a whole. Because of con-flicting dates she fell short of her goal by missing Winston-Salem. She attended the Colored Presbyterial in Bishopville, S. C. North Carolina and South Carolina together sent the President of the Colored Presbyterial to the Conference for Colored Women. Your President has visited one Group Conference, taking part on the program; attended several Executive Board meetings; spoken to five Auxiliaries ; attended General Assembly at Montreat ; visited several of Synod's colleges; attended Inter-Racial meeting in Ra-leigh ; and Trustees' meeting of Mission Court, Richmond, Va. She spent several days in Greensboro attending the Colored Conferences, and several days in Davidson visiting the Young People's Confer-ence; attended Kings Mountain Presbytery's Young People's Con-ference and Young People's League meeting; spent three weeks in Montreat attending Woman's Advisory Committee, Training School, Presbyterial President's Conference, and part of Leadership Con-ference. She served on the Spiritual Life, Hospitality and Pooling Committees of the Woman's Advisory Committee. The North Caro-lina reception was held on the porch of the Winsborough Building. Miss Bess Blakeny, missionary from Japan, dressed in native cos-tume, made a stirring talk. 24 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting Your President was present and presided over five Executive Board meetings. She was present at the meeting of the Furnishing Committee of North Carolina Unit at Mebane, at the meeting of the Memorial Scholarship Committee in Charlotte and has made a number of other trips in the interest of the Synodical. She attended the Appalachia Synodical, taking part on the program. With the assistance of Mrs. W. W. Akers, an itinerary was arranged for Miss Julia Lake Skinner, of Dr. Sweet's office, to visit several of the Presbyterials. It was truly a great treat to those who heard Miss Skinner. Almost a thousand letters and cards were written; reports were sent to Synod and to the Auxiliary office, and several articles were prepared and sent to the Church papers. In closing let me lay on your hearts the responsibility of per-sonal evangelism. "Soul Winning" will be the great program of the Church this year, and I trust this Synodical will be known as a soul-winning body. The Master is calling and is saying to us, "Go ye," and "Lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." Respectfully submitted, (MRS. GEORGE V.) ANNE PATTERSON. Report of Executive Board The Executive Board held one meeting immediate after adjourn-ment of Synodical in Statesville last October. Plans for the year were discussed. A Committee was appointed to raise the scholarship to be known as the Alice Johnson Memorial. Three meetings were held in Montreat during the Training School. There was a splendid attendance at all three of these. The work of the year was dis-cussed at length and plans were outlined for the Synodical meeting in Durham. A Committee was appointed to buy the furniture for North Carolina Unit Mission Court and to prepare building for mis-sionaries. A Committee was appointed by the Chairman to make a list of the necessary accessories for North Carolina Unit. These articles were divided as equally as possible among the nine Pres-byterials. The Presidents of the Presbyterials were asked to present the list to each Presbyterial. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 25 A motion to furnish a room on Synodical Hall in Assembly Inn, Montreat, carried. The room is to be known as the North Carolina Synodical Room. At the meeting in Durham reports of the year and the recom-mendations from the Advisory Committee were taken up and discussed. The Executive Board begs leave to submit the following recom-mendations : Young Peoples' Work 1. That the local Auxiliaries give more thought and prayer to the young people, realizing in a deeper sense their responsibility here and furnishing them with a consecrated, sympathetic Secretary of Religious Education, remembering that the young people of today are the Church of tomorrow. 2. That the women pray earnestly for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for all who are responsble for the leadership of our young people. 3. That the women prayerfully consider our own lives and the example we are setting the young people striving earnestly to live as Christ would have us live. 4. That we keep ourselves fully informed as to the plan for Religious Education now being made by Dr. John L. Fairley, our new co-ordinate secretary of Religious Education, and that there be a close connection and a better understanding between our Sec-retary of Christian Education and the field workers and Young Peoples Committee in Synods and Presbyteries. 5. That we continue our support of the Young People's Confer-ences, and that, inasmuch as this year 7,000 young people have been reached by these, that upon their return from the conferences we do all we possibly can to encourage them in enlisting them in service, making greater definite use of them in active work of the Church. Spiritual Life 1. That we heartily endorse the action of the Committee on Assembly's Work in making plans for a great soul saving campaign in our beloved church and urge our Auxiliaries to pledge their loyal support to same. 26 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting 2. That the special effort for soul winning being planned by our Woman's Advisory Committee be presented as the supreme object of our work during the present year. 3. That our goal be a band of personal workers in every local Auxiliary. 4. That every Home Circle in the local Auxiliary be requested to form itself into an "Intercessory Prayer Band" realizing that prayer is the greatest force at work and the shut-ins' opportunity to help promote the new plans for personal evangelism. 5. That our women be made to feel deeply the great responsibil-ity of refusing an office when proffered to them, realizing that they are losing an opportunity for acceptable stewardship of time and talents. Efficiency 1. That the 20th of March be selected as the latest date for mail-ing out Auxiliary reports to the Presbyterial Recording Secretary. 2. That Auxiliaries use the book prepared by the Assembly's Secretary of Christian Education in the study of that cause. 3. That emphasis be placed on meeting the benevolent budget of the Auxiliary. That $43.00 be paid on expenses of Chairman of Woman's Advisory Committee. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. GEORGE V.) ANNE PATTERSON. Report of Vice-President The Vice-President begs leave to submit the following report : Letters sent, 146. Replies were received from all and in these replies we note much of real interest. Several give as the best work of their Presbyterial the better training of their women in Bible Study and leadership. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. S. M.) MARY W. RANKIN. REPORTS OF SECRETARIES OF CAUSES REPORT OF SECRETARY OF FOREIGN MISSIONS As Secretary of Foreign Missions of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the following report : We have had a great year and rejoice in it. However, especial attention must be called to a falling off in the number of Foreign Mission Gasses. We have had an increase in the membership of these classes. Unusual efforts must be put forth during December by our Secretaries of this cause to see that this falling off, no matter how slight, shall be remedied, and advance, not retreat, be sounded by all heralds of this great cause. Let me urge upon you to be diligent in planning for and car-rying out the plans for a School of Missions in January. May we each give ourselves anew to loyal service for our King, and that for the accomplishment of the task before us in giving the Gospel to the nations we recognize anew our divine obligation . Your Secre-tary of Foreign Missions recommends : 1. That Presbyterials encourage Auxiliaries to assume definite parts in Foreign Mission work. 2. That every church have a "Church School of Missions" in January, using the Foreign Mission Study Books for each age group. 3. That all our Church leaders utilize to the utmost the Foreign Mission programs, literature and visits from Foreign Missionaries offered by the Educational Department, in order that Missions may be given its scriptural place in all departments of our Church life. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 31 4. That Synodical observe January 26 to February 2, 1930, as the Week of Prayer and Self-Denial for Foreign Missions. 5. That Foreign Mission Secretaries of Synodicals and Presby-terials seek to arrange with the Foreign Mission office for mission-ary intineraries among the churches within their bunds as often as opportunity offers. 6. That Sunday Schools focus their attention this year upon the Foreign Mission Education Work, designating their Foreign Mission contributions to the $100,000 being raised in the Sunday Schools for this work, such offerings to be credited to the local Church Foreign Mission Budget. 7. That the Synodical at this meeting engage in special prayer for such an outpouring of the spirit on our Churches as will enable the Exe-cutive Committee to send to all our Missions the desperately needed re-enforcements for which they are pleading, and will bring our whole Church into a deeper sympathy with Him on whose great heart lay ever closest and heaviest the burden of the unreached. C. 33 REPORT OF SECRETARY OF ASSEMBLY'S HOME MISSIONS As Secretary of Assembly's Home Missions of Woman's Aux-iliary of Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the follow-ing report : I have mailed tentative programs for the year to a number of Presbyterial Secretaries and made several talks on the subject of Home Missions and its needs. Assembly's Home Missions has been accorded a prominent place in Auxiliary meetings and programs. We are grateful indeed for the material and spiritual interest manifested by each Auxiliary toward the Assembly's Home Mission Cause and for the birthday offering of over $40,000 for the Nurses' Training School for Negro Girls at Stillman's Institute, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The past year has shown a slight increase in the number of classes studying the Mission Study Book, "Christ and the Country People." More Auxiliaries are giving systematically to the Assem-bly's Home Missions and more are observing the special season of prayer for missions. Nevertheless, the Committee reports that As-sembly's Home Missions has received a further setback of over $10,000 beyond the cut received last year. Wherein have we failed? Do we not need a more earnest work-ing faith in God to awaken a spirit of strength and joy in spreading the teaching of Christ, remembering that, "He who forgets God is unmerciful to himself? Respectfully submitted, (MRS. HARRY) LUCY ESTES GRIMSLEY. (Decrease $1,429.00): $7,191.69 more by the Com-mittee to North Carolina than was received from Synod. Albemarle, Concord, Fayetteville, and Kings Mountain received a larger amount from the Committee than was forwarded to them for this cause. Many letters have been written in the interest of the work. Plans are being made for a visit to the Synodical by Miss Irene Hope Hudson, Field Secretary of Christian Education and Ministerial Relief in the near future. The C. E. and M. R. motto, is "So is the Kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground and should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how." So have we as Secretaries tried to be "sowers of the seed" for the coming Kingdom of our God. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. EDGAR) BETTIE B. YODER. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 35 REPORT OF SECRETARY OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL SERVICE Your Secretary of Christian Social Service submits the following report : All the Presbyterial Secretaries sent in splendid reports of the work accomplished during the year. Only one, Albe-marle, failed to send a report. I feel sure they have been about the Master's business and have done much good. Many report work with the jails and convict camps. Flowers and toys sent to the sick and bereaved. Kindnesses without number to those in need. Some reported colored delegates to the Colored Conference. Assist-ance given Daily Vacation Eible School. There is a decided increase in co-operation with welfare officers and other organizations. More are realizing that "Service is the rent you pay for the space you occupy." I wish to commend the splendid work of the Presbyterial Secretaries to this cause. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. j. R.) MYRTLE McA. PAGE. REPORT OF SECRETARY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SPIRITUAL LIFE As Secretary of Development of Spiritual Life of Woman's Aux-iliary of Synod of Xorth Carolina I beg leave to submit the following report. A comparison of the report of the Secretary of Spiritual Life for the two past years gives the follwoing interesting results. Ac-cording to the figures given, omitting two Presbyterials which show an increase along all lines, for the year ending March, 1929, two Presbyterials show a decrease in Prayer Bands, two in Bible Classes, two in Tithers, three in Family Altars and three in Stewardship Classes. But, on the other hand, four show an increase in Prayer Bands, five in Bible Classes, three in Family Altars, four in Tithers and two in Stewardship Classes. One Presbyterial increased in all these points but one, and two showed gains in all points. Taken as a whole, Xorth Carolina Synodical gained over the year before 51 Prayer Bands, 132 Bible Classes, 176 Family Altars, 247 Tithers and 18 Stewardship Classes. For which we thank God and take courage. For my personal report, since taking office last fall, I have tried to keep in close touch with Presbyterial Secretaries of Spir-itual Life both by letter, having written one hundred letters this year, and also by the daily Prayer Band, in which we Spiritual Life Secretaries join to pray for the deepening of our spiritual life, and for a family altar in every home. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. ANDREW) GERTRUDE J. HOWELL. 36 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting REPORT OF SECRETARY OF LITERATURE As Secretary of Literature of Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the following report: Church School of Missions, 91, gain 46; Prayer Calendars, 4,015, gain, 1841; Survey subscribers, 4,605, loss 505; Survey can-vasses, 259, gain 70; Church Paper subscribers, 7,197, gain 1,158; Church Paper canvasses, 217, gain 41 ; Year Book of Programs, 233, gain 85; Literature table at meeting, 124, gain 44. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. J. H.) SALLIE SUTTENFIELD. REPORT OF THE SECRETARY OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION As Secretary of Religious Education of Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the following report : We are glad that this year we can refer you to the minutes for a statistical report on Young People's Work. The nine Presbyte-rial Secretaries sent in their reports on time. Much improvement was seen in the reports given by Presbyterial League officers at the Synodical League meeting. This was made possible through the re-port blanks furnished the local church by the Synodical Auxiliary. From these reports we learn that : In 70 per cent of the churches reporting the young people do attend the services of the church. The young people are being taught the history, principles and needs of their church. The church papers furnish the material for their programs. They had classes in Bible, Missions, Church His-tory, Church Doctrine, Vocational Guidance and other subjects. They are rendering every form of service to the church, acting as janitor, visiting the sick, county homes and jails, teaching in the Sunday School, Daily Vacation Bible School, and other forms of service. The Presbyterian Young People's League of North Carolina is one of three leagues in the Assembly having a definite program of work, a goal to be attained by the societies and the Presbyterial Leagues of the Synod. Three Presbyteries attained the goal and were enrolled on the bronze tablet, Orange, Kings Mountain and for a third time, Albemarle. To the League specials the young people contributed : For the College Gift Fund for Barium, $269.00; for the Mamie McElwee Scholarship Fund, to date, $2,250.00. Wilmington and Winston- Salem completed their quota ; Fayetteville and Kings Mountain went over the top. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 37 Some of the goals attained by Leagues in 1929, adopted by other Leagues for 1930, are : Putting the Presbytery on the Honor Roll; completing their quota of the Mamie McElwee Scholarship; holding a Presbyterial Conference ; holding quarterly meetings of the League. Other goals are : Every Society an Honor Society, an organization in every church, every organization an Honor one. A Young People's Conference or Camp was held in seven of our nine Presbyterials varying in length from three to eight years. With seven Presbyterial Conferences on would expect the Davidson Con-ference to be much smaller, but Mecklenburg came 100 strong. Wil-mington and Albemarle chartered busses, cutting the cost of trans-portation to less than one straight fare, making it possible for the 1929 conference to be the largest in the history with 449 registered young people. We will report only those things peculiar to 1929 Conference : The bronze tablet was presented to the young people by Dr. Henderlite, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Con-ference. An outstanding feature of the Conference was a discussion of life problems by the young people under the leadership of the League President, Archie Williford. Listening in we thought if this is the thinking of the youth of today, certainly the world is growing better, but we realized we were in a select group, the choice young people of our Synod. A new organization came into being. Our four colleges for women, Peace, Flora Macdonald, Mitchell and Queens, have with-drawn from the Y. W. C. A. and at their request an hour was pro-vided for them to meet as a group to discuss problems pertaining to college life. Believing that in unity there is strength, they organ-ized under the name of the Students Christian Association of the Synod of North Carolina. An Executive Committee was formed, composed of a President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Cor-responding Secretary, together with Miss Anderson of Peace, and Miss McElwee of Mitchell. This Committee will first meet at Peace as soon as they can secure a Field Secretary from our Louisville office to meet with them. As for the personnel of the Conference : (Our faculty was composed of experts) ; our young people, the key boys and girls of the local church ; our counsellors, men and women fitted to lead their group into a closer fellowship with our Savior ; our League 38 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting officers, young people with the gift of leadership and in the lan-guage of Dr. Lingle, a large amount of consecrated common sense. Your Secretary now places on record the most encouraging report made during her term of service. More efficient work has been done by the societies of the Presbyterial and Synodical Leagues. A finer spirit of co-operation with Presbyterial Secretaries has been felt. A greater opportunity has been given the young people to train for Christian service. Reports are not complete but the Pres-byterial Secretaries reported more than 3,000 young people attend-ing some Conference or League meeting during the year. With the help of Miss McElwee report blanks were prepared, printed and sent to the local church through the Presbyterial Sec-retaries. Copies of the Honor Roll folder were printed and fur-nished the Presbyterial Secretaries and League officers for dis-tribution in their Presbytery. (This was financed by the Treasurer of the Davidson Conference.) Your Secretary attended three Con-ference Committee meetings, one in Charlotte, two at Davidson, the Young People's Advisory Council at Montreat, the Davidson Con-ference, and by invitation, the annual meetings of the Leagues of Wilmington, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem Presbyteries, and the Wilmington Conference at White Lake. Respectfully submitted, MARGARET MacQUEEN. REPORT OF SECRETARY OF SYNODICAL AND PRESBY-TERIAL HOME MISSIONS As Secretary of Synodical and Presbyterial Home Missions, I beg to submit the following report : Upon being elected, your Secretary of Synodical and Presby-terial Home Missions I wrote to each of the nine Presbyterial Secretaries of this cause. Miss Hall, your former Secretary, was most gracious and help-ful in writing her experience, giving valuable assistance by sugges-tion, also the names and addresses of the Presbyterial Secretaries. In July another letter was written to each of the nine, urging her, first to have a written list of her local Secretaries, that she may call them by name in prayer. Second, to get a clear-cut knowledge of how this cause is promoted in the State, especially in her Pres-bytery. Third, that she request the local Secretaries to see that the second week of September be observed in prayer and self- Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C 39 denial for Synodical and Presbyterial Home Missions, and that the needs be presented in Sunday Schools, Auxiliaries and congregations during this time. To these nine letters there were received four replies. The names of these four noble and self-sacrificing women your Secre-tary asks permission to record in the minutes of the North Caro-lina Synodical. They are as follows : Mrs. Ruth W. Norfleet, Win-ston- Salem, N. C; Mrs. C. G. Long, Albemarle, N. C; Sallie M. Thrower, Laurinburg, N. C. ; Mrs. N. N. Fleming, Mebane, N. C. Your Secretary attended daily the Negro Women's Conference and taught three lessons in parliamentary law, also the Bible Class on Sunday morning. She addressed a group conference in Orange Presbytery, and had several conferences with your superintendent, Rev. E. E. Gillespie. He says you have more young people in the State colleges by far than in your church schools. Earnest and able workers among these must be provided and contributions liberally offered. Many Sunday Schools must be establshed. Several trained men and women placed in weak churches and assured a living sal-ary. A strong public sentiment of sympathy created in larger con-gregations for those not as well equipped, spiritually and materially. These are a few of the many needs throughout your favored Synodical and Presbyterial bounds. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. E. P.) ATTAWAY D. WHARTON. REPORTS OF PERMANENT COMMITTEES REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON INTER-RACIAL RELATIONS As Chairman of Committee on Inter-Racial Relations I beg leave to submit the following report : The Seventh Annual Conference for the Colored Women of North Carolina was held at Bennett College, Greensboro, June 1-8. Sixty-two delegates were present. This is fewer than for some time. We don't know the reason for this, but sincerely hope it was not from a lack of interest on the part of the Auxiliaries. The Bible was taught in a most wonderful way by Mrs. Blair of Greensboro. It was a great pleasure to have our Synodical Presi-dent, Mrs. Patterson, with us. Her very presence was an inspiration to all. The Health Talks, Sunday School Methods, Community Talks, were fine and very helpful. Two talks should receive special men-tion. The Christian Home by Mrs. E. P. Walker of Reidsville, and the Daily Vacation Bible School by Miss Dubose of Greensboro. 40 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting Mrs. E. P. Wharton was of invaluable assistance in getting up the program and carrying it out. Dr. R. D. Bedinger ,of our Congo Mission, spoke twice on Sun-day, thrilling his audience, both white and black. As always, the Story Hour was most ppoular. We are all, really, just "children of a larger growth" and love a story. We began a new plan this year. Giving a Gospel to every young or old person. When they have read it through and memor-ized at least three verses and wrote them out from memory, we give them a New Testament. Six hundred Gospels and 50 Testaments have already been given. This does not come out of the Conference funds, so if anyone would like to help with this part of the Master's work, we would be glad to have them. God has said, "My Word shall not return unto me void" and we are praying that this seed may indeed be sown in good ground and bring forth much fruit to His honor and glory. In keeping up with the delegates through the year, hundreds of letters have been written. The Conference next year will be held at Teachers College, Winston-Salem, June 4-11. Respectfully submitted, MARGARET G. RANKIN, REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON YOUNG PEOPLES WORK As Chairman of Committee on Young People's Work I beg leave to submit the following report : Advancement has been shown in the number of Presbyterials reaching the Honor Roll this year for which we give thanks to God. C, October, 1926, to promote the erec-tion of a North Carolina Unit at Mission Court, Richmond, Va., I beg to submit the following report : The building is finished, furnished and occupied, and now it gives me very great pleasure formally to present it to the Synodical of North Carolina, and to thank you for the joy that I have had in this work of Chairman of the Committee. I want also to thank all those who have helped us, and many have, but I wish particu-larly to express my appreciation to the other members of the Com-mittee for their loyal sympathy, co-operation and help at all times. Though the building is finished, and four families of mission- 46 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting aries comfortably and happily installed there, I am sorry to say that it is not fully paid for. In order that the work might go on and the contractors could have their money promptly, I have ad-vanced the payments as they came due, which, after deducting my own contribution , already amount to $16,600 for the building and $2,664.99 for the furnishings. There is another payment on the building still due. As you know our plan has been to make appeals only to individuals, as we did not want to put the burden of another spe-cial upon the organized work of our women. Appeals have been made through the Church papers, through letters and personal solici-tation, and I am asking now for your further support in that way, in order that the indebtedness resting upon the Synodical for this building and its furnishings may be wiped out. I thank you again for this opportunity of service, and trust that many happy families may be housed in our building through the coming years. AIRS. CAMERON MORRISON. Letters of sympathy have been written to the officers and secretaries who on account of illness were unable to attend the Synodical. A letter was written to Dr. Scanlon, pastor of the hostess church, expressing the sincere regrets of the Synodical at his absence because of illness and extending best wishes for a speedy recovery. A message of love was sent to the Secretary Emeritus of the Woman's Auxiliary, Mrs. W. C. Winsborough. Respectfully submitted, MRS. W. B. RAMSAY, Chairman, MRS. J. R. PHIPPS, MRS. E. W. HARVEY, MRS. D. E. HOFFMAN, MRS. GEO. MATTHIS. Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 51 REPORTS OF PRESBYTERIAL PRESIDENTS As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Albemarle Presby-tery, I beg leave to submit the following report : It is most gratifying to be able to show a marked increase in those things which tend to develop the spirituality of our Auxil-iaries. We are delighted at the increase in number of Church Schools of Missions, Prayer Bands, Bible Study Classes, Tithers and Prayer Calendars being used, but regret exceedingly a decrease in Family Altars. All of the Auxiliaries show a growing interest in Christian Social Service ; also in Home and Foreign Missions. They also report Stewardship being stressed during the year. In April a most delightful annual meeting was held in Tarboro with a large and interested crowd in attendance. One of the groups comprising only two Auxiliaries, it was thought best to combine this group this year with a larger group. This makes one less Group Conference being held than usual. One new Auxiliary has been added. Albemarle has contributed to the Alice Johnson Scholarship Fund, to the furnishing of a room in Assembly Inn, and has donated to Mission Court the glass and china for two apartments. These were done in accordance with the wishes of Synodical. In addition there was for the fourth time one hundred per cent birthday offer-ing and contributions all church causes and to White Cross. A special effort has been made to bring the young people into closer contact with the Presbyterial and the local Auxiliaries, stress-ing their work and trying to teach them something of what the women are doing. At the Presbyterial one devotional was turned over to them and was conducted in a wonderful manner. Albemarle was for the third time on the Honor Roll of the Davidson Confer-ence. This is the most encouraging phase of our work at present. We can as yet report no Gold Circle Auxiliary but are delighted to report three Silver Circles which is much better than we have done before. There are four volunteers for life service. While there is still much room for improvement, we feel that we can see evidence of growth and we hope for better results next year. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. W. L.) MARY HOWARD CLARK. 52 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Concord Presbytery I beg leave to submit the following report : Concord Presbyterial held its annual meeting in Hickory April 24-25 with an attendance of 293. Our Synodical President, Mrs. George Patterson, was present and in her gracious manner added much to the interest of the meeting with her earnest and spirit-filled message to our women. Other prominent speakers present were Mr. Knight, of Lavaras, Brazil, and Mr. Edgar Tufts, of Banner Elk. At this meeting Mrs. Edgar Yoder, who had served as President of Concord Presbyterial for four years, handed the gavel over to the newly elected President. Mrs. Yoder ,a devout follower of our dear Lord and Master, did a wonderful work and accomplished much for the extension of His Kingdom throughout her administration. We are greatly in-debted to her for this very fine report. Last year we reported 48 Auxiliaries ; this year we have 52 with a membership of 3,738, a gain of 284. We have 13 Blue Circles, 11 Silver and one Gold Auxiliary, 12 High School Girls' Circles with a membership of 181 ; eight Junior Circles with 139 members. There has been an increase along all spiritual lines with the exception of the number of family altars reported. However, with 108 Prayer Bands, an increase of 27 over last year, we do feel that our women are much in prayer, which will have its effect in the homes. Bible Classes, 86, an increase of 16, with 1,270 members, an increase of 284 members; 34 volunteers for life service; Prayer Calendars used, 574, 120 more than were used last year. Stewardship was presented in 27 Auxiliaries which will mean an increase in Tithers. We had 1,442 members enrolled in the study of Foreign Mis-sions, an increase of 175, and 973 studying Home Missions. This year we are glad to report 13 Church Schools of Missions against four reported last year. Most of the Auxiliaries observed day of prayer and self-denial for both Foreign and Home Missions. Thirty-four Auxiliaries did their bit of White Cross work, a con-servative estimate of value, S254.00. A growing interest in Christian social work is shown in the wonderful reports received. Almost every kind of service was rendered to mankind, demonstrating prac-tical Christianity by loving service. Presbyterial has for several Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 53 years given three scholarships to Assembly's Training School, preparing some of our finest young women for Christian work. Presbyterial specials for this year, furnishings for Mission Court cost $75.00, our apportionment to the Alice Johnson Memorial Fund, $120.00; $200.00 toward the expense of a Director of Religious Edu-cation in the Presbytery; $35.00 toward the Synodical room at Assembly Inn, have all been met. We foster the big sister plan whenever possible, by passing our Mission Study Books, furnishing literature gospels and visiting and trying to help them to help themselves. One method used ef-fectively was a big church sending a delegate from a weak country church to the Training School at Montreat, in this way fitting her for a leader in her church and community. We are glad to announce that one of our former Presidents, Mrs. W. B. Ramsay, has been called to the Presidency of Mitchell College, and six of our women added to the Board of Trustees. We held four group conferences in September with the largest enrollment of any previous year. Much enthusiasm and interest was manifested in the program presented. Our birthday gifts exceed those of previous years, $1,197.20 given this year, an increase of $315.56 over last year's gifts. Our grand total to all causes, $31,249.00, an increase of $1,970.00. As a new President we enter into the work with a determina-tion to help advance the Kingdom of Christ relying on Him for wisdom and strength to carry on the work. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. FRANK B.) OLIVE C. GWIN. As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Fayetteville Presby-tery I beg leave to submit the following report : Fayetteville Presbyterial met April 9-10 in Laurinburg. This was the fortieth annual meeting and the evening program was given over to a celebration of the occasion. The Historian, Mrs. L. Mac- Donald, prepared an historical sketch, divided into five periods, each reviewed by a charter member of the Presbyterial. A large and beautifully decorated cake with forty candles was brought in by girls dressed in white, singing birthday greetings. Afterward the cake was cut and passed to all visitors during a social hour. 54 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting The attendance was unusually good, there being 430 registered, including officers, delegates, alternates and visitors. The theme of the meeting was Christian-Religious Education. Bible Studies in Amos were given by Dr. E. T. Thompson, of Union Theological Seminary; Dr. E. B. Paisley, of the Assembly's Training School, gave an address on Religious Education ; Dr. W. H. Stuart, of Flora Macdonald College, spoke on the Christian College; Miss Julia Lake Skinner brought a message from the Executive Com-mittee on Christian Education and Ministerial Relief ; Mrs. E. B. Paisley spoke on Methods in Mission Study. It was a great pleas-ure to welcome the new Synodical President, Mrs. G. V. Patterson, and have a message from her. Mrs. W. L. Wilson explained the new Auxiliary Standard, and Mrs. Charles Rankin presented the annual Auxiliary birthday party. Fayetteville Presbytery now has 95 churches, 38 of which, to-gether with two missions, are supported by the Home Mission Committee. Only 14 of the 95 have preaching every Sunday, and there are only five not in the rural class. There are 69 Auxiliaries with a membership of 3,386. Owing to the reports having to be in by March 15th, several Auxiliaries were not counted this year. The total contributions were $29,927.00, a decrease of $1,051.00, but we are grateful to report the largest improvement in development of spiritual life of any previous year. There were more Bible Classes, more Prayer Bands, more Family Altars, more Prayer Calendars taken, more Mission Study Classes, more Year Books used, more Auxiliaries doing White Cross work. There were eight Group Conferences held ;three Executive Committee meetings, and two new Auxiliaries organized. A splendid conference for the young people of the Presbytery was held at Flora Macdonald College, and there are 18 volunteers for Christian service. The three "Specials" continue to be $700.00 for a Bible teacher at Elise High School; $500.00 for domestic science at Flora Macdonald College, and ten cents per capita for Mission Court. The 1930 Pres-byterial meeting will be held in the Highland Church of Fayetteville. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. W. M.) ALICE R. FAIRLEY. REPORT OF GRANVILLE PRESBYTERIAL As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Granville Presbytery I beg leave to submit the following report : Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 55 We have today in Granville Presbyterial forty-five organized churches. We must remember, though, that Raleigh and Durham are the only towns within our bounds that have a population of over 15,000, the majority of them having less than 5,000. The majority of the churches are missions churches and conditions such that no satisfactory form of Auxiliary plan can be worked out. For instance, the church at Fellowship is struggling to organize right now under the able leadership of Miss Blue. There are only four or five women in the church, all hard working farm women and all hard pressed for money, so much so that Sunday School and church collections are almost entirely of pennies, and this is typical of a great many of these country churches. We have in spite of this though 26 organized Auxiliaries. One new Auxiliary ; but one disbanded in the last year. We have a membership of 1,693 women, last year 1,490, an increase of 203 in membership ; 19 include all women on church roll, 14 last year; 21 are divided into circles, 17 last year. I am sorry to report a decrease in total amount of gifts. The gift per capita this year was $8.86, last year $10. There is a decided increase again along some lines in the spiritual life of the Presby-terial. We have 13 volunteers for life service and only nine last year. A decrease in Family Altars and Tithers, but an increase in Prayer Bands of six, and Bible Classes of 21. We have eight Blue Circle Auxiliaries, with four last year and seven Silver Circle Auxil-iaries this year with two last year. The meeting of Presbyterial was held this year at Warrenton with a splendid attendance. We could not have been entertained more graciously or hospitably than those ladies did it. We had with us several of our men. Their very presence inspired us to better and larger tasks. A fine program planned by the program committee kept us interested from start to finish. We had on that program our beloved Synodical President, Mrs. Patterson. Our own Mrs. Blacknall, of Durham, led our Bible study. Miss Myrtle Wil-liamson brought a message from the hills. Mr. Cary Adams told of the wonderful work done among the young people at the camp conducted by Granville Presbytery. Dr. Pressly brought us the message from Peace. Mr. Johnston told us of our children at Barium. Mr. C. C. Knight brought us the Foreign Mission address. Mr. Link spoke on Presbyterial Home Missions, and our program was complete with an address on Assembly's Home Missions by Dr. Homer McMillan. Our rainbow excellence chart carried with it zest and enthusi-asm and an inspiration for better work for next year. We adjourned to meet next year in Smithfield. 56 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting We have held four Executive Board meetings. Have had two group conferences, being rained out at the third one. One was held at Geneva Church, one at Kenly. They were wonderfully well attended and full of inspiration and enthuisasm for the Master's service. Our President's Conference, held early in September, was a huge success. We had 27 in attendance, 19 of the Auxiliaries being represented. This is the family gathering of the Presbyterial and here it is that we plan our programs and talk over our problems. It is a time when quite often we can glimpse our rainbow through the clouds, and we always leave there with more consecration and enthusisam for the work than we had before we went. As President of Granville Presbyterial I visited 10 of my Auxil-iaries last year and expect to continue that this year, as it is one of the greatest pleasures of my work. Our goal in Granville this year is two new Auxiliaries, a more definite study of Stewardship, a more determined effort to win souls for Christ and a more definite personal touch with the individual. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. R. J.) MAMIE RENNIE WYATT. As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Kings Mountain Presby-tery I beg leave to submit the following report : Since coming into this office in April of this year, I have held four Committee meetings relative to Mission Court, the White Cross Work, and our District Conferences, attended the Auxiliary Train-ing School in Montreat in July, was present at three Executive Committee meetings of the Synodical there, attended our two Group Conferences, and have written about 75 letters concerning the work. Out of 38 organized churches in Kings Mountain Presbytery, we have Auxiliaries in 34, and our goal this year is to enroll the remaining four, making a 100 per cent Presbytery. Twenty-one of these Auxiliaries include all women on church roll. Sixteen reported on the Standard this past year, there being eight Blue Seal Auxil-iaries and four Silver Seal ones. We held two Group Conferences in September, one at West Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 57 Avenue Church, Gastonia, and one at Spindale. There was a good attendance at these meetings, in spite of very inclement weather, and very fine programs were presented, featuring addresses on China by Mrs. Lacy Little and Miss Attie Bostick, messages on "Personal Evangelism" by local ministers, and helpful studies of Romans by the Secretary of Spiritual Life. We are very proud to have the North Carolina Synodical Presi-dent, a loyal member of our Presbyterial, and she was a most honored and helpful speaker at the conferences. Another year we hope to add a third district to our Presbyterial. As to finances : We have given our apportionment of $35.00 to help furnish the N. C. Synodical room in Assembly Inn and have paid our allotted part of $70.00 to the Alice Johnson Memorial Schol-arship Fund. Our women were most enthusiastic and responsive in helping furnish the four apartments in N. C. Unit Mission Court and on September 7th we sent our assignment, two boxes, contain-ing 40 pairs of window curtains, 16 bedspreads, four crib spreads, eight scarfs, nine table clothes, and six dozen table napkins, valued at $93.00. We were all very glad and proud to have a small share in furnishing this refuge home for our missionaries on furlough. Our Presbyterial special for this year is helping in the building of a church at Duncan's Creek, Home Mission territory up in the mountain section of our Presbytery. We have contributed $150.00 so far to this fund and hope to add more as the Auxiliaries have special offerings. We are at work now on our allotment for White Cross work, and hope to come up to our full assignment in this. Our birthday offering this past year amounted to $555.55, against $468.00 the year before, and we lacked only three Auxiliaries of having a 100 per cent Presbyterial. Our total gfts to all causes were $13,220.00, an increase of $142.00 over last year's contributions. We note a small decrease in Prayer Bands and Bible Study Classes but an increase in Family Altars, Tithers and Mission Study Classes, which is encouraging. We have received four new Auxiliaries since last Synodical meeting and though they are "small sisters," we hope to have others lend them a helping hand and be "big sisters" to them. We now have 1,324 women enrolled in our Auxiliaries, an in-crease of 187 over last year's enrollment. 58 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting With this fine group of loyal, Christian women and a splendid band of officers, always ready to co-operate and help, and with God's continued blessing and guidance, we hope to push forward to greater service for our Master this next year, always remember-ing and living up to one of our Auxiliary mottoes : "I must be about my Father's business." Respectfully submitted, (MRS. COIT M.) PEARL S. ROBINSON. It is my pleasure to submit the twenty-fifth annual report of Mecklenburg Presbyterial Auxiliary of Mecklenburg Presbytery. There are 67 Auxiliaries, with 4,184 members; 123 Bible Classes with 2,067 mem6bers ; 161 Prayer Bands, with 2,093 members ; 722 Family Altars and 976 Tithers ; 57 Foreign Mission Classes were held, with 1,642 members; 51 Home Mission Classes, with 1,383 members; 46 Stewardship Classes; 1,025 Prayer Calendars were used; 22 Auxiliaries were Blue Circle Auxiliaries, and 14 Silver Circle Auxiliaries. Birthday offering for Stillman Insttute was $1,609.70. Our gift for White Cross work amounted to $388.00. Gifts for all causes amounted to $67,579.00. More than half of the churches in our Presbytery are Home Mission churches, and lack leadership, which accounts largely for there not being an Auxiliary in every church. It was my privilege to hold seven Group Conferences ; four executive meetings; organized three Auxiliaries; reorganized two Auxiliaries; visited 46 Auxiliaries, and traveled 2,987 miles in Presby-terial work. I am indeed grateful to our Heavenly Father, and to the women of the Presbyterial for an opportunity to serve in this great work; and also for the splendid co-operation I have received. It is my earnest prayer that this year may see larger growth, not only in work and gifts, but in increased spirituality throughout our entire church. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. A. A.) BESSIE NOEL WALKER, As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Orange Presbytery I beg leave to submit the following report: The thirty-second annual report of the Woman's Auxiliary of Orange Presbyterial records a most fruitful year. The annual meet-ing was held in High Point, April 18th and 19th. As we look back Woman's Auxiliary of Synod qf N. C. 59 over the year there is much to encourage us, but we see there is still much "unpossessed land." We have 72 churches in the Presbytery and Auxiliaries in 53 of them. We have organized three new Auxiliaries during the year and we are hoping to double this number this year. Sixteen of our Auxiliaries are Silver Seal, and 16 Blue Seal. The increase in the spiritual life has been most marked and this explains the development in leadership. We find more than 1,182 women enrolled in 119 Prayer Bands and 1,464 enrolled in the 125 Bible Classes. These Prayer Bands and Bible Classes are the forces of spiritual power in our work. We have 493 Family Altars, an increase of 11, and we have 643 Tithers, an increase of 34 over last year. We are most happy to report 20 volunteers for life service over 16 for last year. Forty-five Auxiliaries had Foreign Mission Study Classes with an attendance of 1,321. Forty Auxiliaries had Home Mission Study Classes with 1,177 in attendance. We have 826 Surveys, and 1,008 Church papers. Our total gifts to benevolences was $22,225 and we are so happy that $8,865 of this amount went to Foreign Missions, so we have decided that one of our goals for the year is to educate the men of our church to give to Foreign Missions. We are striving to promote personal evangelism during this year, praying for a great spiritual awakening among our people and a passion for service to advance cur Master's Kingdom and to carry out His command, "Unto the utermost part of the earth." Respectfully submitted, (MRS. E. P.) HELENE M. WALKER, As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Wilmington Presby-tery I beg leave to submit the following report: The forty-second annual report of Wilmington Presbyterial records a fruitful year, showing a gratifying increase in the spir-itual and educational work of the Presbyterial. For the second time in the history of the Presbyterial we are happy to report that one Auxiliary has attained the "Gold Seal" — 100 per cent on the Standard. Last year eight Auxiliaries won the "Silver Seal"; this year 15 Auxiliaries have won it, and 15 Auxiliaries have won the "Blue Seal." This shows wonderful improvement in the work done. The reports show : Prayer Bands, 69, increase three ; 697 en- 60 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting rolled; Bible Classes, 49, increase eight, 719 enrolled; F. A. 484, in-crease 23; Tithers 574, increase 63; F. M. Study Classes 36, 580 en-rolled; H. M. Study Classes 36, 580 enrolled; Stewardship Classes 25, increase three. There was a large increase in the numbers en-rolled in these classes. Survey subscribers 655, decrease 53; Church papers 720, decrease 13; Prayer Calendars 369, increase 121. There was a decrease of $2,139.00 in gifts, and while this seems discourag-ing, it was due to economic conditions, and not from indifference on the part of our women. We held our annual days of prayer in the six districts of the Presbyterial in November ,and four Efficiency Conferences in May. These meetings were well attended and splendid programs were pre-sented at each meeting. No new Auxiliaries have been organized during the year, owing to the lack of leadership in the small churches that have no organization, but we have endeavored through the Efficiency Conference and other methods to develop the organ-izations that we have that they may do a better work. As special work our Presbyterial voted to raise $1,000 to endow a room in the new dormitory at Peace Institute, giving $250 a year for four years, and $250 this year towards the domestic science teacher's salary at Flora Macdonald College. We have also raised our quota of $110 for the Alice Johnson Scholarship Fund, and $35 towards furnishing a room at Assembly Inn by the Synodical. We voted at our September Executive Com-mittee meeting to raise $5,000 for Dr. Worth to build a nurses' home at Kyang Yin Hospital. Special features of the year's work have been the erection of a memorial tablet in the ladies' parlor of the Frst Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, commemorating the organization of our Pres-byterial in that church in 1888, and as a memorial for Mrs. B. F. Hall, organizer and first President of the Presbyterial. The completion of the Worth Memorial Fund of $1,000, which has been used for furnishing an apartment at the N. C. Unit of Mission Court, Richmond, Va., as a memorial to our beloved mis-sionary to Kyang Yin, China, Emma Chadbourn Worth. Appropriate memorial services commemorating the life and service of our beloved Honorary President, Mrs. Jackson Johnson, were held at the days of prayer in November and at the Presby-terial. In April a beautiful memorial service was also held for her at New Hope, the little church where she worshipped and labored for so many years, at which time as a gift of love the Presbyterial Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 61 presented a communion table, pulpit furniture and a Bible suitably inscribed to this church as a memorial for her. Respectfully submitted, (MRS. W. T.) SARAH E. BANNERMAN. As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Winston-Salem Pres-bytery I beg leave to submit the following report : The Winston-Salem Presbytery is one of the youngest in the Synod, one of the largest in area, but one of the weakest in membership, due mainly to the past isolation of the mountainous counties. We number nine counties, thirty-two churches, only nine of which have full-time pastors, and nineteen Auxiliaries. The women of these Auxiliaries are interested and working as the report will show; an increase of members in spite of one Auxiliary disbanding; in number of Prayer Bands, Family Altars, Tithers, Bible Study Classes, subscriptions to Prayer Calendars and Mission Study Classes. This year we have three Blue Seal, six Silver Seal, and one Gold Seal Auxiliary, the Gold Seal being won by North Wilkesboro. Seven Auxiliaries sent delegates to the Conference for Colored Women in Greensboro. One Auxiliary assist in Sunday School work for colored people, another has a circle of colored women. The reports of the Secretaries, of course, show an increased interest and understanding of the work of the church and observ-ance of the special weeks and days of prayers. The financial report shows an increase in per capita gifts, but a decrease in total gifts, due largely to a decrease in Home and Foreign Missions special gifts. However, we are encouraged by 100 per cent gifts to our only Presbyterial School at Glade Valley, salary for an Assembly's Training School worker in Stokes County, White Cross and birthday gifts. Four Executive meetings and six Group Conferences were held during the year and an Efficiency Conference lasting one day. Presbytery honored our Auxiliary by appointing the President and Secretary of Presbyterial and Synodical Missions as members of its Home Mission Committee. We are grateful for the spirit of harmony and co-operation that exists among the Auxiliaries and pray that we may go forward "Walking in love as Christ hath also loved us." PROGRAM
Seventeenth Annual Meeting
WOMAN'S AUXILIARY
Synod of North Carolina
Theme: Foreign Missions
Motto: "For the Son of Man is come to seek and to
save that which was lost."
"Go ye therefore and teach all nations."
"Lift up your eyes," the Master said,
Look on the fields and see
White harvests wait on every hand
;
Will you reap there for me?"
"Lift up your eyes," away from self,
The fields of the world are white,
And dying millions cry in vain,
Lost in sin's awful night.
"Look on the fields," see now the need,
For the reapers are so few;
When pray ye: "Lord send laborers,
Show me what I may do."
Auxiliary Motto: "Walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us."
Eph. 5:2.

22 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
REPORTS OF OFFICERS
REPORT OF PRESIDENT
As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of the North Carolina
Synod I beg leave to submit the following report
:
In presenting the seventeenth Annual Report of the Woman's
Auxiliary of the Synod of North Carolina, grateful acknowledge-ment
of God's blessing and guidance in the progress of the work
is made and keen appreciation of the splendid work done by the
women of the Synodical is expressed.
With much to encourage us, we still have much to do and many
things to cause us serious thought. We have eight new Auxiliaries
with twenty more than last year counting every woman on church
roll. There are 954 more members with 37 more Silver Seal Circles
and seven more Gold Seal Circles.
There is a large increase in Prayer Calendar, Church papers
and Survey subscriptions. There is a gratifying increase in family
altars. Too much emphasis cannot be put on this sacred institution.
The growth in Bible study is good, but less than half of the women
of the Church are taking part in this study. Reports show a small
increase in Tithers. There was an increase in Mission Study Classes
and Stewardship Classes.
The financial report shows an increase in Miscellaneous Contribu-tions,
but a serious decrease in Denominational Benevolences. Let
us be more loyal to the causes of the Church and bring our gifts
up this year. May we all give more sacrificially.
Christian Social Service has increased during the year and much
good has been done through this phase of the work.
Through the efforts and generosity of Mrs. Cameron Morrison,
N. C. Unit Mission Court has been built this year.
Interest in White Cross Work has grown. Fourteen more new
Auxiliaries took part in this service of love.
The Young People's Conference was a decided success. There
is no greater responsibility for us than that of safeguarding our
young people.
The Conference for Negro Women, under the leadership of Miss
Margaret Rankin, was one of the best ever held in interest and
results.
The forty-three Group Conferences and Efficiency Conferences
held during the year have done much to train the women in the
work.
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 23
Special Synodical work done by the nine Presbyterials included
furnishing a room on Synodical Hall, in Assembly Inn, Montreat, at
a cost of $350.00; raising a thousand-dollar scholarship in memory of
Mrs. Jackson Johnson, first President of the North Carolina Synodi-cal,
and furnishing linens, bedding, china, kitchen utensils, and many
other necessary accessories for North Carolina Unit Mission Court.
Wilmington Presbyterial furnished one of the apartments of North
Carolina Unit in memory of Mrs. Worth.
It has been a year teeming with interest for your President.
While the duties have been arduous, the personal gain has far sur-passed
the demands upon time, thought, and strength. Mistakes
have been made and there have been failures, but they have not
been from the heart for her constant wish and prayer has been for
the best interest of the Synodical.
It was with regret that the Interdenominational Meeting was
missed. No notice was received of the meeting and it was too late
when inquiry was made. Nevertheless, your President is most grate-ful
for your willingness to send her.
Your President visited Wilmington, Albemarle, Fayetteville,
Granville, Orange, Concord, Mecklenburg, and Kings Mountain Pres-byterials
and was delighted and wonderfully helped through fellow-ship
and vision received of the work as a whole. Because of con-flicting
dates she fell short of her goal by missing Winston-Salem.
She attended the Colored Presbyterial in Bishopville, S. C. North
Carolina and South Carolina together sent the President of the
Colored Presbyterial to the Conference for Colored Women. Your
President has visited one Group Conference, taking part on the
program; attended several Executive Board meetings; spoken to
five Auxiliaries ; attended General Assembly at Montreat ; visited
several of Synod's colleges; attended Inter-Racial meeting in Ra-leigh
; and Trustees' meeting of Mission Court, Richmond, Va. She
spent several days in Greensboro attending the Colored Conferences,
and several days in Davidson visiting the Young People's Confer-ence;
attended Kings Mountain Presbytery's Young People's Con-ference
and Young People's League meeting; spent three weeks in
Montreat attending Woman's Advisory Committee, Training School,
Presbyterial President's Conference, and part of Leadership Con-ference.
She served on the Spiritual Life, Hospitality and Pooling
Committees of the Woman's Advisory Committee. The North Caro-lina
reception was held on the porch of the Winsborough Building.
Miss Bess Blakeny, missionary from Japan, dressed in native cos-tume,
made a stirring talk.
24 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
Your President was present and presided over five Executive
Board meetings. She was present at the meeting of the Furnishing
Committee of North Carolina Unit at Mebane, at the meeting of
the Memorial Scholarship Committee in Charlotte and has made
a number of other trips in the interest of the Synodical. She attended
the Appalachia Synodical, taking part on the program.
With the assistance of Mrs. W. W. Akers, an itinerary was
arranged for Miss Julia Lake Skinner, of Dr. Sweet's office, to visit
several of the Presbyterials. It was truly a great treat to those
who heard Miss Skinner.
Almost a thousand letters and cards were written; reports were
sent to Synod and to the Auxiliary office, and several articles were
prepared and sent to the Church papers.
In closing let me lay on your hearts the responsibility of per-sonal
evangelism. "Soul Winning" will be the great program of the
Church this year, and I trust this Synodical will be known as a
soul-winning body. The Master is calling and is saying to us, "Go
ye," and "Lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world."
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. GEORGE V.) ANNE PATTERSON.
Report of Executive Board
The Executive Board held one meeting immediate after adjourn-ment
of Synodical in Statesville last October. Plans for the year
were discussed. A Committee was appointed to raise the scholarship
to be known as the Alice Johnson Memorial. Three meetings were
held in Montreat during the Training School. There was a splendid
attendance at all three of these. The work of the year was dis-cussed
at length and plans were outlined for the Synodical meeting
in Durham. A Committee was appointed to buy the furniture for
North Carolina Unit Mission Court and to prepare building for mis-sionaries.
A Committee was appointed by the Chairman to make
a list of the necessary accessories for North Carolina Unit. These
articles were divided as equally as possible among the nine Pres-byterials.
The Presidents of the Presbyterials were asked to present
the list to each Presbyterial.
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 25
A motion to furnish a room on Synodical Hall in Assembly Inn,
Montreat, carried. The room is to be known as the North Carolina
Synodical Room.
At the meeting in Durham reports of the year and the recom-mendations
from the Advisory Committee were taken up and
discussed.
The Executive Board begs leave to submit the following recom-mendations
:
Young Peoples' Work
1. That the local Auxiliaries give more thought and prayer to
the young people, realizing in a deeper sense their responsibility
here and furnishing them with a consecrated, sympathetic Secretary
of Religious Education, remembering that the young people of today
are the Church of tomorrow.
2. That the women pray earnestly for the guidance of the Holy
Spirit for all who are responsble for the leadership of our young
people.
3. That the women prayerfully consider our own lives and the
example we are setting the young people striving earnestly to live
as Christ would have us live.
4. That we keep ourselves fully informed as to the plan for
Religious Education now being made by Dr. John L. Fairley, our
new co-ordinate secretary of Religious Education, and that there
be a close connection and a better understanding between our Sec-retary
of Christian Education and the field workers and Young
Peoples Committee in Synods and Presbyteries.
5. That we continue our support of the Young People's Confer-ences,
and that, inasmuch as this year 7,000 young people have been
reached by these, that upon their return from the conferences we do
all we possibly can to encourage them in enlisting them in service,
making greater definite use of them in active work of the Church.
Spiritual Life
1. That we heartily endorse the action of the Committee on
Assembly's Work in making plans for a great soul saving campaign
in our beloved church and urge our Auxiliaries to pledge their loyal
support to same.
26 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
2. That the special effort for soul winning being planned by our
Woman's Advisory Committee be presented as the supreme object
of our work during the present year.
3. That our goal be a band of personal workers in every local
Auxiliary.
4. That every Home Circle in the local Auxiliary be requested
to form itself into an "Intercessory Prayer Band" realizing that
prayer is the greatest force at work and the shut-ins' opportunity
to help promote the new plans for personal evangelism.
5. That our women be made to feel deeply the great responsibil-ity
of refusing an office when proffered to them, realizing that they
are losing an opportunity for acceptable stewardship of time and
talents.
Efficiency
1. That the 20th of March be selected as the latest date for mail-ing
out Auxiliary reports to the Presbyterial Recording Secretary.
2. That Auxiliaries use the book prepared by the Assembly's
Secretary of Christian Education in the study of that cause.
3. That emphasis be placed on meeting the benevolent budget
of the Auxiliary. That $43.00 be paid on expenses of Chairman of
Woman's Advisory Committee.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. GEORGE V.) ANNE PATTERSON.

:

REPORT OF HISTORIAN FOR YEAR 1928-1929
Your Historian would report that she has completed files of
both Synodical and Presbyterial minutes for the year 1928-1929.
30 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
Letters have been written during the year to all Presbyterial
Historians asking for outstanding achievements in their respective
Presbyterials. Replies were received from all and in these replies
we note much of real interest. Several give as the best work of
their Presbyterial the better training of their women in Bible Study
and leadership.
Respectfully submitted,

REPORTS OF SECRETARIES OF CAUSES
REPORT OF SECRETARY OF FOREIGN MISSIONS
As Secretary of Foreign Missions of the Woman's Auxiliary of
the Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the following
report
:
We have had a great year and rejoice in it. However, especial
attention must be called to a falling off in the number of Foreign
Mission Gasses. We have had an increase in the membership of
these classes. Unusual efforts must be put forth during December
by our Secretaries of this cause to see that this falling off, no matter
how slight, shall be remedied, and advance, not retreat, be sounded
by all heralds of this great cause.
Let me urge upon you to be diligent in planning for and car-rying
out the plans for a School of Missions in January. May we
each give ourselves anew to loyal service for our King, and that
for the accomplishment of the task before us in giving the Gospel to
the nations we recognize anew our divine obligation . Your Secre-tary
of Foreign Missions recommends
:
1. That Presbyterials encourage Auxiliaries to assume definite
parts in Foreign Mission work.
2. That every church have a "Church School of Missions" in
January, using the Foreign Mission Study Books for each age
group.
3. That all our Church leaders utilize to the utmost the Foreign
Mission programs, literature and visits from Foreign Missionaries
offered by the Educational Department, in order that Missions
may be given its scriptural place in all departments of our Church
life.
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 31
4. That Synodical observe January 26 to February 2, 1930, as
the Week of Prayer and Self-Denial for Foreign Missions.
5. That Foreign Mission Secretaries of Synodicals and Presby-terials
seek to arrange with the Foreign Mission office for mission-ary
intineraries among the churches within their bunds as often
as opportunity offers.
6. That Sunday Schools focus their attention this year upon
the Foreign Mission Education Work, designating their Foreign
Mission contributions to the $100,000 being raised in the Sunday
Schools for this work, such offerings to be credited to the local
Church Foreign Mission Budget.
7. That the Synodical at this meeting engage in special prayer for
such an outpouring of the spirit on our Churches as will enable the Exe-cutive
Committee to send to all our Missions the desperately needed re-enforcements
for which they are pleading, and will bring our whole
Church into a deeper sympathy with Him on whose great heart lay ever
closest and heaviest the burden of the unreached.
Respectfully sumbitted,
SARA WOOTEN JOHNSTON,
(Mrs. Willis Johnston).

WHITE CROSS REPORT
Our White Cross work was again successfully accomplished
and all our Presbyterials had the joy of taking part in this labor
of love for our missionary doctors and nurses in our foreign hos-pitals.
Doctor Worth said, "Let me assure you of the tremendous help
that these White Cross supplies are to the hospital. They save
a tremendous amount of time to the staff and, also, a great deal
of money is saved for the hospital, which makes it possible for them

In our Synodical we have 390 Auxiliaries and 253 giving to
White Cross, which is an increase of 19 over last year.
I submit the following recommendation for White Cross work
:
That each Presbyterial try to interest each church to have a
part in White Cross, and that we may be faithful to the trust and
privilege given us in doing this for our Master.

REPORT OF SECRETARY OF ASSEMBLY'S HOME MISSIONS
As Secretary of Assembly's Home Missions of Woman's Aux-iliary
of Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the follow-ing
report
:
I have mailed tentative programs for the year to a number of
Presbyterial Secretaries and made several talks on the subject of
Home Missions and its needs.
Assembly's Home Missions has been accorded a prominent
place in Auxiliary meetings and programs. We are grateful indeed
for the material and spiritual interest manifested by each Auxiliary
toward the Assembly's Home Mission Cause and for the birthday
offering of over $40,000 for the Nurses' Training School for Negro
Girls at Stillman's Institute, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The past year has shown a slight increase in the number of
classes studying the Mission Study Book, "Christ and the Country
People." More Auxiliaries are giving systematically to the Assem-bly's
Home Missions and more are observing the special season of
prayer for missions. Nevertheless, the Committee reports that As-sembly's
Home Missions has received a further setback of over
$10,000 beyond the cut received last year.
Wherein have we failed? Do we not need a more earnest work-ing
faith in God to awaken a spirit of strength and joy in spreading
the teaching of Christ, remembering that, "He who forgets God
is unmerciful to himself?
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. HARRY) LUCY ESTES GRIMSLEY.

Many letters have been written in the interest of the work. Plans
are being made for a visit to the Synodical by Miss Irene Hope
Hudson, Field Secretary of Christian Education and Ministerial
Relief in the near future. The C. E. and M. R. motto, is "So is
the Kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed into the ground
and should sleep and rise night and day and the seed should spring
and grow up, he knoweth not how." So have we as Secretaries tried
to be "sowers of the seed" for the coming Kingdom of our God.

REPORT OF SECRETARY OF CHRISTIAN SOCIAL SERVICE
Your Secretary of Christian Social Service submits the
following report : All the Presbyterial Secretaries sent in splendid
reports of the work accomplished during the year. Only one, Albe-marle,
failed to send a report. I feel sure they have been about the
Master's business and have done much good. Many report work
with the jails and convict camps. Flowers and toys sent to the
sick and bereaved. Kindnesses without number to those in need.
Some reported colored delegates to the Colored Conference. Assist-ance
given Daily Vacation Eible School. There is a decided increase
in co-operation with welfare officers and other organizations. More
are realizing that "Service is the rent you pay for the space you
occupy." I wish to commend the splendid work of the Presbyterial
Secretaries to this cause.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. j. R.) MYRTLE McA. PAGE.
REPORT OF SECRETARY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF
SPIRITUAL LIFE
As Secretary of Development of Spiritual Life of Woman's Aux-iliary
of Synod of Xorth Carolina I beg leave to submit the following
report.
A comparison of the report of the Secretary of Spiritual Life
for the two past years gives the follwoing interesting results. Ac-cording
to the figures given, omitting two Presbyterials which show
an increase along all lines, for the year ending March, 1929, two
Presbyterials show a decrease in Prayer Bands, two in Bible Classes,
two in Tithers, three in Family Altars and three in Stewardship
Classes. But, on the other hand, four show an increase in Prayer
Bands, five in Bible Classes, three in Family Altars, four in Tithers
and two in Stewardship Classes. One Presbyterial increased in all
these points but one, and two showed gains in all points.
Taken as a whole, Xorth Carolina Synodical gained over the
year before 51 Prayer Bands, 132 Bible Classes, 176 Family Altars,
247 Tithers and 18 Stewardship Classes. For which we thank God
and take courage.
For my personal report, since taking office last fall, I have
tried to keep in close touch with Presbyterial Secretaries of Spir-itual
Life both by letter, having written one hundred letters this
year, and also by the daily Prayer Band, in which we Spiritual Life
Secretaries join to pray for the deepening of our spiritual life,
and for a family altar in every home.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. ANDREW) GERTRUDE J. HOWELL.

REPORT OF THE SECRETARY OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
As Secretary of Religious Education of Woman's Auxiliary of
Synod of North Carolina I beg leave to submit the following report
:
We are glad that this year we can refer you to the minutes
for a statistical report on Young People's Work. The nine Presbyte-rial
Secretaries sent in their reports on time. Much improvement was
seen in the reports given by Presbyterial League officers at the
Synodical League meeting. This was made possible through the re-port
blanks furnished the local church by the Synodical Auxiliary.
From these reports we learn that
:
In 70 per cent of the churches reporting the young people do
attend the services of the church.
The young people are being taught the history, principles and
needs of their church. The church papers furnish the material for
their programs. They had classes in Bible, Missions, Church His-tory,
Church Doctrine, Vocational Guidance and other subjects.
They are rendering every form of service to the church, acting
as janitor, visiting the sick, county homes and jails, teaching in the
Sunday School, Daily Vacation Bible School, and other forms of
service.
The Presbyterian Young People's League of North Carolina is
one of three leagues in the Assembly having a definite program of
work, a goal to be attained by the societies and the Presbyterial
Leagues of the Synod. Three Presbyteries attained the goal and were
enrolled on the bronze tablet, Orange, Kings Mountain and for a
third time, Albemarle.
To the League specials the young people contributed : For the
College Gift Fund for Barium, $269.00; for the Mamie McElwee
Scholarship Fund, to date, $2,250.00. Wilmington and Winston-
Salem completed their quota ; Fayetteville and Kings Mountain went
over the top.
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 37
Some of the goals attained by Leagues in 1929, adopted by
other Leagues for 1930, are : Putting the Presbytery on the Honor
Roll; completing their quota of the Mamie McElwee Scholarship;
holding a Presbyterial Conference ; holding quarterly meetings of
the League. Other goals are : Every Society an Honor Society, an
organization in every church, every organization an Honor one.
A Young People's Conference or Camp was held in seven of our
nine Presbyterials varying in length from three to eight years. With
seven Presbyterial Conferences on would expect the Davidson Con-ference
to be much smaller, but Mecklenburg came 100 strong. Wil-mington
and Albemarle chartered busses, cutting the cost of trans-portation
to less than one straight fare, making it possible for the
1929 conference to be the largest in the history with 449 registered
young people.
We will report only those things peculiar to 1929 Conference :
The bronze tablet was presented to the young people by Dr.
Henderlite, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Con-ference.
An outstanding feature of the Conference was a discussion of
life problems by the young people under the leadership of the League
President, Archie Williford. Listening in we thought if this is the
thinking of the youth of today, certainly the world is growing
better, but we realized we were in a select group, the choice young
people of our Synod.
A new organization came into being. Our four colleges for
women, Peace, Flora Macdonald, Mitchell and Queens, have with-drawn
from the Y. W. C. A. and at their request an hour was pro-vided
for them to meet as a group to discuss problems pertaining
to college life. Believing that in unity there is strength, they organ-ized
under the name of the Students Christian Association of the
Synod of North Carolina. An Executive Committee was formed,
composed of a President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Cor-responding
Secretary, together with Miss Anderson of Peace, and
Miss McElwee of Mitchell. This Committee will first meet at Peace
as soon as they can secure a Field Secretary from our Louisville
office to meet with them.
As for the personnel of the Conference : (Our faculty was
composed of experts) ; our young people, the key boys and girls of
the local church ; our counsellors, men and women fitted to lead
their group into a closer fellowship with our Savior ; our League
38 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
officers, young people with the gift of leadership and in the lan-guage
of Dr. Lingle, a large amount of consecrated common sense.
Your Secretary now places on record the most encouraging
report made during her term of service. More efficient work has
been done by the societies of the Presbyterial and Synodical Leagues.
A finer spirit of co-operation with Presbyterial Secretaries has been
felt. A greater opportunity has been given the young people to
train for Christian service. Reports are not complete but the Pres-byterial
Secretaries reported more than 3,000 young people attend-ing
some Conference or League meeting during the year.
With the help of Miss McElwee report blanks were prepared,
printed and sent to the local church through the Presbyterial Sec-retaries.
Copies of the Honor Roll folder were printed and fur-nished
the Presbyterial Secretaries and League officers for dis-tribution
in their Presbytery. (This was financed by the Treasurer
of the Davidson Conference.) Your Secretary attended three Con-ference
Committee meetings, one in Charlotte, two at Davidson, the
Young People's Advisory Council at Montreat, the Davidson Con-ference,
and by invitation, the annual meetings of the Leagues of
Wilmington, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem Presbyteries, and the
Wilmington Conference at White Lake.
Respectfully submitted,
MARGARET MacQUEEN.
REPORT OF SECRETARY OF SYNODICAL AND PRESBY-TERIAL
HOME MISSIONS
As Secretary of Synodical and Presbyterial Home Missions, I
beg to submit the following report
:
Upon being elected, your Secretary of Synodical and Presby-terial
Home Missions I wrote to each of the nine Presbyterial
Secretaries of this cause.
Miss Hall, your former Secretary, was most gracious and help-ful
in writing her experience, giving valuable assistance by sugges-tion,
also the names and addresses of the Presbyterial Secretaries.
In July another letter was written to each of the nine, urging her,
first to have a written list of her local Secretaries, that she may
call them by name in prayer. Second, to get a clear-cut knowledge
of how this cause is promoted in the State, especially in her Pres-bytery.
Third, that she request the local Secretaries to see that
the second week of September be observed in prayer and self-
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C 39
denial for Synodical and Presbyterial Home Missions, and that the
needs be presented in Sunday Schools, Auxiliaries and congregations
during this time.
To these nine letters there were received four replies. The
names of these four noble and self-sacrificing women your Secre-tary
asks permission to record in the minutes of the North Caro-lina
Synodical. They are as follows : Mrs. Ruth W. Norfleet, Win-ston-
Salem, N. C; Mrs. C. G. Long, Albemarle, N. C; Sallie M.
Thrower, Laurinburg, N. C. ; Mrs. N. N. Fleming, Mebane, N. C.
Your Secretary attended daily the Negro Women's Conference
and taught three lessons in parliamentary law, also the Bible Class
on Sunday morning. She addressed a group conference in Orange
Presbytery, and had several conferences with your superintendent,
Rev. E. E. Gillespie. He says you have more young people in the
State colleges by far than in your church schools. Earnest and able
workers among these must be provided and contributions liberally
offered. Many Sunday Schools must be establshed. Several trained
men and women placed in weak churches and assured a living sal-ary.
A strong public sentiment of sympathy created in larger con-gregations
for those not as well equipped, spiritually and materially.
These are a few of the many needs throughout your favored
Synodical and Presbyterial bounds.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. E. P.) ATTAWAY D. WHARTON.
REPORTS OF PERMANENT COMMITTEES
REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON INTER-RACIAL RELATIONS
As Chairman of Committee on Inter-Racial Relations I beg leave
to submit the following report
:
The Seventh Annual Conference for the Colored Women of
North Carolina was held at Bennett College, Greensboro, June 1-8.
Sixty-two delegates were present. This is fewer than for some
time. We don't know the reason for this, but sincerely hope it was
not from a lack of interest on the part of the Auxiliaries.
The Bible was taught in a most wonderful way by Mrs. Blair
of Greensboro. It was a great pleasure to have our Synodical Presi-dent,
Mrs. Patterson, with us. Her very presence was an inspiration
to all.
The Health Talks, Sunday School Methods, Community Talks,
were fine and very helpful. Two talks should receive special men-tion.
The Christian Home by Mrs. E. P. Walker of Reidsville, and
the Daily Vacation Bible School by Miss Dubose of Greensboro.
40 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
Mrs. E. P. Wharton was of invaluable assistance in getting up the
program and carrying it out.
Dr. R. D. Bedinger ,of our Congo Mission, spoke twice on Sun-day,
thrilling his audience, both white and black.
As always, the Story Hour was most ppoular. We are all,
really, just "children of a larger growth" and love a story.
We began a new plan this year. Giving a Gospel to every
young or old person. When they have read it through and memor-ized
at least three verses and wrote them out from memory, we
give them a New Testament. Six hundred Gospels and 50 Testaments
have already been given. This does not come out of the Conference
funds, so if anyone would like to help with this part of the Master's
work, we would be glad to have them. God has said, "My Word
shall not return unto me void" and we are praying that this seed
may indeed be sown in good ground and bring forth much fruit
to His honor and glory.
In keeping up with the delegates through the year, hundreds
of letters have been written.
The Conference next year will be held at Teachers College,
Winston-Salem, June 4-11.
Respectfully submitted,
MARGARET G. RANKIN,

a fund of $100.00 to meet the expenses of the Secretary of Young
Peoples' Work in promoting the work.

REPORT OF FINANCE COMMITTEE
October, 1929—October, 1930
Recommendations
1. That the Presbyter ial apportionment of the Synodical Budget be
based this year on an average obtained from the 1926, 1927, 1928 gifts
of the Presbyterial to the Benevolent Causes of the church, and that after
this year it be based upon the total gifts to the Benevolent Causes of the
preceding year.
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 43
2. That the local auxiliary's apportionment of the Presbyterial Bud-get

part of the Presbyterial and Synodical Contingent Fund.
3. That the Upkeep Fund of Mission Court, estimated at $1,000.00
annually, be placed upon the Synodical Budget, apportioned to the Pres-byterials

MISSION COURT
On behalf of the Committee appointed at the meeting of Synod-ical,
held at Red Springs, N. C, October, 1926, to promote the erec-tion
of a North Carolina Unit at Mission Court, Richmond, Va., I
beg to submit the following report
:
The building is finished, furnished and occupied, and now it
gives me very great pleasure formally to present it to the Synodical
of North Carolina, and to thank you for the joy that I have had
in this work of Chairman of the Committee. I want also to thank
all those who have helped us, and many have, but I wish particu-larly
to express my appreciation to the other members of the Com-mittee
for their loyal sympathy, co-operation and help at all times.
Though the building is finished, and four families of mission-

aries comfortably and happily installed there, I am sorry to say
that it is not fully paid for. In order that the work might go on
and the contractors could have their money promptly, I have ad-vanced
the payments as they came due, which, after deducting my
own contribution , already amount to $16,600 for the building and
$2,664.99 for the furnishings. There is another payment on the
building still due.
As you know our plan has been to make appeals only to
individuals, as we did not want to put the burden of another spe-cial
upon the organized work of our women. Appeals have been
made through the Church papers, through letters and personal solici-tation,
and I am asking now for your further support in that way,
in order that the indebtedness resting upon the Synodical for this
building and its furnishings may be wiped out.
I thank you again for this opportunity of service, and trust
that many happy families may be housed in our building through
the coming years.
AIRS. CAMERON MORRISON.

Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 51
REPORTS OF PRESBYTERIAL PRESIDENTS
As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Albemarle Presby-tery,
I beg leave to submit the following report
:
It is most gratifying to be able to show a marked increase
in those things which tend to develop the spirituality of our Auxil-iaries.
We are delighted at the increase in number of Church Schools
of Missions, Prayer Bands, Bible Study Classes, Tithers and Prayer
Calendars being used, but regret exceedingly a decrease in Family
Altars.
All of the Auxiliaries show a growing interest in Christian
Social Service ; also in Home and Foreign Missions. They also report
Stewardship being stressed during the year.
In April a most delightful annual meeting was held in Tarboro
with a large and interested crowd in attendance.
One of the groups comprising only two Auxiliaries, it was
thought best to combine this group this year with a larger group.
This makes one less Group Conference being held than usual. One
new Auxiliary has been added.
Albemarle has contributed to the Alice Johnson Scholarship
Fund, to the furnishing of a room in Assembly Inn, and has donated
to Mission Court the glass and china for two apartments. These
were done in accordance with the wishes of Synodical. In addition
there was for the fourth time one hundred per cent birthday offer-ing
and contributions all church causes and to White Cross.
A special effort has been made to bring the young people into
closer contact with the Presbyterial and the local Auxiliaries, stress-ing
their work and trying to teach them something of what the
women are doing. At the Presbyterial one devotional was turned
over to them and was conducted in a wonderful manner. Albemarle
was for the third time on the Honor Roll of the Davidson Confer-ence.
This is the most encouraging phase of our work at present.
We can as yet report no Gold Circle Auxiliary but are delighted
to report three Silver Circles which is much better than we have
done before. There are four volunteers for life service.
While there is still much room for improvement, we feel that
we can see evidence of growth and we hope for better results
next year.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. W. L.) MARY HOWARD CLARK.
52 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Concord Presbytery I
beg leave to submit the following report
:
Concord Presbyterial held its annual meeting in Hickory April
24-25 with an attendance of 293. Our Synodical President, Mrs.
George Patterson, was present and in her gracious manner added
much to the interest of the meeting with her earnest and spirit-filled
message to our women. Other prominent speakers present
were Mr. Knight, of Lavaras, Brazil, and Mr. Edgar Tufts, of
Banner Elk. At this meeting Mrs. Edgar Yoder, who had served
as President of Concord Presbyterial for four years, handed the
gavel over to the newly elected President.
Mrs. Yoder ,a devout follower of our dear Lord and Master,
did a wonderful work and accomplished much for the extension of
His Kingdom throughout her administration. We are greatly in-debted
to her for this very fine report.
Last year we reported 48 Auxiliaries ; this year we have 52
with a membership of 3,738, a gain of 284. We have 13 Blue Circles,
11 Silver and one Gold Auxiliary, 12 High School Girls' Circles
with a membership of 181 ; eight Junior Circles with 139 members.
There has been an increase along all spiritual lines with the
exception of the number of family altars reported. However, with
108 Prayer Bands, an increase of 27 over last year, we do feel
that our women are much in prayer, which will have its effect in
the homes.
Bible Classes, 86, an increase of 16, with 1,270 members, an
increase of 284 members; 34 volunteers for life service; Prayer
Calendars used, 574, 120 more than were used last year.
Stewardship was presented in 27 Auxiliaries which will mean
an increase in Tithers.
We had 1,442 members enrolled in the study of Foreign Mis-sions,
an increase of 175, and 973 studying Home Missions. This year
we are glad to report 13 Church Schools of Missions against four
reported last year. Most of the Auxiliaries observed day of prayer
and self-denial for both Foreign and Home Missions.
Thirty-four Auxiliaries did their bit of White Cross work, a con-servative
estimate of value, S254.00. A growing interest in Christian
social work is shown in the wonderful reports received. Almost
every kind of service was rendered to mankind, demonstrating prac-tical
Christianity by loving service. Presbyterial has for several
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 53
years given three scholarships to Assembly's Training School,
preparing some of our finest young women for Christian work.
Presbyterial specials for this year, furnishings for Mission Court
cost $75.00, our apportionment to the Alice Johnson Memorial Fund,
$120.00; $200.00 toward the expense of a Director of Religious Edu-cation
in the Presbytery; $35.00 toward the Synodical room at
Assembly Inn, have all been met.
We foster the big sister plan whenever possible, by passing
our Mission Study Books, furnishing literature gospels and visiting
and trying to help them to help themselves. One method used ef-fectively
was a big church sending a delegate from a weak country
church to the Training School at Montreat, in this way fitting her
for a leader in her church and community.
We are glad to announce that one of our former Presidents,
Mrs. W. B. Ramsay, has been called to the Presidency of Mitchell
College, and six of our women added to the Board of Trustees.
We held four group conferences in September with the largest
enrollment of any previous year. Much enthusiasm and interest
was manifested in the program presented.
Our birthday gifts exceed those of previous years, $1,197.20
given this year, an increase of $315.56 over last year's gifts. Our
grand total to all causes, $31,249.00, an increase of $1,970.00.
As a new President we enter into the work with a determina-tion
to help advance the Kingdom of Christ relying on Him for
wisdom and strength to carry on the work.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. FRANK B.) OLIVE C. GWIN.
As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Fayetteville Presby-tery
I beg leave to submit the following report
:
Fayetteville Presbyterial met April 9-10 in Laurinburg. This
was the fortieth annual meeting and the evening program was given
over to a celebration of the occasion. The Historian, Mrs. L. Mac-
Donald, prepared an historical sketch, divided into five periods,
each reviewed by a charter member of the Presbyterial. A large
and beautifully decorated cake with forty candles was brought in
by girls dressed in white, singing birthday greetings. Afterward
the cake was cut and passed to all visitors during a social hour.
54 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
The attendance was unusually good, there being 430 registered,
including officers, delegates, alternates and visitors. The theme of
the meeting was Christian-Religious Education. Bible Studies in
Amos were given by Dr. E. T. Thompson, of Union Theological
Seminary; Dr. E. B. Paisley, of the Assembly's Training School,
gave an address on Religious Education ; Dr. W. H. Stuart, of
Flora Macdonald College, spoke on the Christian College; Miss
Julia Lake Skinner brought a message from the Executive Com-mittee
on Christian Education and Ministerial Relief ; Mrs. E. B.
Paisley spoke on Methods in Mission Study. It was a great pleas-ure
to welcome the new Synodical President, Mrs. G. V. Patterson,
and have a message from her. Mrs. W. L. Wilson explained the
new Auxiliary Standard, and Mrs. Charles Rankin presented the
annual Auxiliary birthday party.
Fayetteville Presbytery now has 95 churches, 38 of which, to-gether
with two missions, are supported by the Home Mission
Committee. Only 14 of the 95 have preaching every Sunday, and
there are only five not in the rural class. There are 69 Auxiliaries
with a membership of 3,386. Owing to the reports having to be
in by March 15th, several Auxiliaries were not counted this year.
The total contributions were $29,927.00, a decrease of $1,051.00, but
we are grateful to report the largest improvement in development
of spiritual life of any previous year. There were more Bible Classes,
more Prayer Bands, more Family Altars, more Prayer Calendars
taken, more Mission Study Classes, more Year Books used, more
Auxiliaries doing White Cross work.
There were eight Group Conferences held ;three Executive
Committee meetings, and two new Auxiliaries organized. A splendid
conference for the young people of the Presbytery was held at
Flora Macdonald College, and there are 18 volunteers for Christian
service.
The three "Specials" continue to be $700.00 for a Bible teacher at
Elise High School; $500.00 for domestic science at Flora Macdonald
College, and ten cents per capita for Mission Court. The 1930 Pres-byterial
meeting will be held in the Highland Church of Fayetteville.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. W. M.) ALICE R. FAIRLEY.
REPORT OF GRANVILLE PRESBYTERIAL
As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Granville Presbytery I
beg leave to submit the following report
:
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 55
We have today in Granville Presbyterial forty-five organized
churches. We must remember, though, that Raleigh and Durham
are the only towns within our bounds that have a population of over
15,000, the majority of them having less than 5,000. The majority
of the churches are missions churches and conditions such that no
satisfactory form of Auxiliary plan can be worked out. For instance,
the church at Fellowship is struggling to organize right now under
the able leadership of Miss Blue. There are only four or five women
in the church, all hard working farm women and all hard pressed
for money, so much so that Sunday School and church collections
are almost entirely of pennies, and this is typical of a great many
of these country churches. We have in spite of this though 26
organized Auxiliaries. One new Auxiliary ; but one disbanded in
the last year. We have a membership of 1,693 women, last year
1,490, an increase of 203 in membership ; 19 include all women on
church roll, 14 last year; 21 are divided into circles, 17 last year.
I am sorry to report a decrease in total amount of gifts. The gift
per capita this year was $8.86, last year $10. There is a decided
increase again along some lines in the spiritual life of the Presby-terial.
We have 13 volunteers for life service and only nine last
year. A decrease in Family Altars and Tithers, but an increase in
Prayer Bands of six, and Bible Classes of 21. We have eight Blue
Circle Auxiliaries, with four last year and seven Silver Circle Auxil-iaries
this year with two last year.
The meeting of Presbyterial was held this year at Warrenton
with a splendid attendance. We could not have been entertained
more graciously or hospitably than those ladies did it. We had
with us several of our men. Their very presence inspired us to
better and larger tasks. A fine program planned by the program
committee kept us interested from start to finish. We had on that
program our beloved Synodical President, Mrs. Patterson. Our own
Mrs. Blacknall, of Durham, led our Bible study. Miss Myrtle Wil-liamson
brought a message from the hills. Mr. Cary Adams told
of the wonderful work done among the young people at the camp
conducted by Granville Presbytery. Dr. Pressly brought us the
message from Peace. Mr. Johnston told us of our children at
Barium. Mr. C. C. Knight brought us the Foreign Mission address.
Mr. Link spoke on Presbyterial Home Missions, and our program
was complete with an address on Assembly's Home Missions by
Dr. Homer McMillan.
Our rainbow excellence chart carried with it zest and enthusi-asm
and an inspiration for better work for next year. We adjourned
to meet next year in Smithfield.
56 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
We have held four Executive Board meetings. Have had two
group conferences, being rained out at the third one. One was held
at Geneva Church, one at Kenly. They were wonderfully well
attended and full of inspiration and enthuisasm for the Master's
service.
Our President's Conference, held early in September, was a
huge success. We had 27 in attendance, 19 of the Auxiliaries being
represented. This is the family gathering of the Presbyterial and
here it is that we plan our programs and talk over our problems.
It is a time when quite often we can glimpse our rainbow through
the clouds, and we always leave there with more consecration and
enthusisam for the work than we had before we went.
As President of Granville Presbyterial I visited 10 of my Auxil-iaries
last year and expect to continue that this year, as it is one
of the greatest pleasures of my work.
Our goal in Granville this year is two new Auxiliaries, a more
definite study of Stewardship, a more determined effort to win
souls for Christ and a more definite personal touch with the
individual.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. R. J.) MAMIE RENNIE WYATT.
As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Kings Mountain Presby-tery
I beg leave to submit the following report
:
Since coming into this office in April of this year, I have held
four Committee meetings relative to Mission Court, the White Cross
Work, and our District Conferences, attended the Auxiliary Train-ing
School in Montreat in July, was present at three Executive
Committee meetings of the Synodical there, attended our two Group
Conferences, and have written about 75 letters concerning the work.
Out of 38 organized churches in Kings Mountain Presbytery,
we have Auxiliaries in 34, and our goal this year is to enroll the
remaining four, making a 100 per cent Presbytery. Twenty-one of
these Auxiliaries include all women on church roll. Sixteen reported
on the Standard this past year, there being eight Blue Seal Auxil-iaries
and four Silver Seal ones.
We held two Group Conferences in September, one at West
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 57
Avenue Church, Gastonia, and one at Spindale. There was a good
attendance at these meetings, in spite of very inclement weather,
and very fine programs were presented, featuring addresses on China
by Mrs. Lacy Little and Miss Attie Bostick, messages on "Personal
Evangelism" by local ministers, and helpful studies of Romans by
the Secretary of Spiritual Life.
We are very proud to have the North Carolina Synodical Presi-dent,
a loyal member of our Presbyterial, and she was a most
honored and helpful speaker at the conferences. Another year we
hope to add a third district to our Presbyterial.
As to finances : We have given our apportionment of $35.00 to
help furnish the N. C. Synodical room in Assembly Inn and have
paid our allotted part of $70.00 to the Alice Johnson Memorial Schol-arship
Fund. Our women were most enthusiastic and responsive in
helping furnish the four apartments in N. C. Unit Mission Court
and on September 7th we sent our assignment, two boxes, contain-ing
40 pairs of window curtains, 16 bedspreads, four crib spreads,
eight scarfs, nine table clothes, and six dozen table napkins, valued
at $93.00. We were all very glad and proud to have a small share
in furnishing this refuge home for our missionaries on furlough.
Our Presbyterial special for this year is helping in the building
of a church at Duncan's Creek, Home Mission territory up in the
mountain section of our Presbytery. We have contributed $150.00
so far to this fund and hope to add more as the Auxiliaries have
special offerings.
We are at work now on our allotment for White Cross work,
and hope to come up to our full assignment in this.
Our birthday offering this past year amounted to $555.55, against
$468.00 the year before, and we lacked only three Auxiliaries of
having a 100 per cent Presbyterial.
Our total gfts to all causes were $13,220.00, an increase of $142.00
over last year's contributions.
We note a small decrease in Prayer Bands and Bible Study
Classes but an increase in Family Altars, Tithers and Mission Study
Classes, which is encouraging.
We have received four new Auxiliaries since last Synodical
meeting and though they are "small sisters," we hope to have others
lend them a helping hand and be "big sisters" to them.
We now have 1,324 women enrolled in our Auxiliaries, an in-crease
of 187 over last year's enrollment.
58 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
With this fine group of loyal, Christian women and a splendid
band of officers, always ready to co-operate and help, and with
God's continued blessing and guidance, we hope to push forward
to greater service for our Master this next year, always remember-ing
and living up to one of our Auxiliary mottoes : "I must be about
my Father's business."
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. COIT M.) PEARL S. ROBINSON.
It is my pleasure to submit the twenty-fifth annual report
of Mecklenburg Presbyterial Auxiliary of Mecklenburg Presbytery.
There are 67 Auxiliaries, with 4,184 members; 123 Bible Classes
with 2,067 mem6bers ; 161 Prayer Bands, with 2,093 members ; 722
Family Altars and 976 Tithers ; 57 Foreign Mission Classes were
held, with 1,642 members; 51 Home Mission Classes, with 1,383
members; 46 Stewardship Classes; 1,025 Prayer Calendars were
used; 22 Auxiliaries were Blue Circle Auxiliaries, and 14 Silver
Circle Auxiliaries.
Birthday offering for Stillman Insttute was $1,609.70. Our gift
for White Cross work amounted to $388.00. Gifts for all causes
amounted to $67,579.00.
More than half of the churches in our Presbytery are Home
Mission churches, and lack leadership, which accounts largely for
there not being an Auxiliary in every church.
It was my privilege to hold seven Group Conferences ; four
executive meetings; organized three Auxiliaries; reorganized two
Auxiliaries; visited 46 Auxiliaries, and traveled 2,987 miles in Presby-terial
work.
I am indeed grateful to our Heavenly Father, and to the
women of the Presbyterial for an opportunity to serve in this great
work; and also for the splendid co-operation I have received.
It is my earnest prayer that this year may see larger growth,
not only in work and gifts, but in increased spirituality throughout
our entire church.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. A. A.) BESSIE NOEL WALKER,
As President of Woman's Auxiliary of Orange Presbytery I beg
leave to submit the following report:
The thirty-second annual report of the Woman's Auxiliary of
Orange Presbyterial records a most fruitful year. The annual meet-ing
was held in High Point, April 18th and 19th. As we look back
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod qf N. C. 59
over the year there is much to encourage us, but we see there is
still much "unpossessed land."
We have 72 churches in the Presbytery and Auxiliaries in 53
of them. We have organized three new Auxiliaries during the year
and we are hoping to double this number this year. Sixteen of our
Auxiliaries are Silver Seal, and 16 Blue Seal.
The increase in the spiritual life has been most marked and
this explains the development in leadership. We find more than
1,182 women enrolled in 119 Prayer Bands and 1,464 enrolled in
the 125 Bible Classes. These Prayer Bands and Bible Classes are
the forces of spiritual power in our work.
We have 493 Family Altars, an increase of 11, and we have
643 Tithers, an increase of 34 over last year. We are most happy
to report 20 volunteers for life service over 16 for last year.
Forty-five Auxiliaries had Foreign Mission Study Classes with
an attendance of 1,321. Forty Auxiliaries had Home Mission Study
Classes with 1,177 in attendance. We have 826 Surveys, and 1,008
Church papers.
Our total gifts to benevolences was $22,225 and we are so
happy that $8,865 of this amount went to Foreign Missions, so we
have decided that one of our goals for the year is to educate the
men of our church to give to Foreign Missions.
We are striving to promote personal evangelism during this
year, praying for a great spiritual awakening among our people
and a passion for service to advance cur Master's Kingdom and to
carry out His command, "Unto the utermost part of the earth."
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. E. P.) HELENE M. WALKER,
As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Wilmington Presby-tery
I beg leave to submit the following report:
The forty-second annual report of Wilmington Presbyterial
records a fruitful year, showing a gratifying increase in the spir-itual
and educational work of the Presbyterial.
For the second time in the history of the Presbyterial we are
happy to report that one Auxiliary has attained the "Gold Seal"
—
100 per cent on the Standard. Last year eight Auxiliaries won the
"Silver Seal"; this year 15 Auxiliaries have won it, and 15 Auxiliaries
have won the "Blue Seal." This shows wonderful improvement in
the work done.
The reports show : Prayer Bands, 69, increase three ; 697 en-
60 Minutes of Seventeenth Annual Meeting
rolled; Bible Classes, 49, increase eight, 719 enrolled; F. A. 484, in-crease
23; Tithers 574, increase 63; F. M. Study Classes 36, 580 en-rolled;
H. M. Study Classes 36, 580 enrolled; Stewardship Classes
25, increase three. There was a large increase in the numbers en-rolled
in these classes. Survey subscribers 655, decrease 53; Church
papers 720, decrease 13; Prayer Calendars 369, increase 121. There
was a decrease of $2,139.00 in gifts, and while this seems discourag-ing,
it was due to economic conditions, and not from indifference
on the part of our women.
We held our annual days of prayer in the six districts of the
Presbyterial in November ,and four Efficiency Conferences in May.
These meetings were well attended and splendid programs were pre-sented
at each meeting. No new Auxiliaries have been organized
during the year, owing to the lack of leadership in the small
churches that have no organization, but we have endeavored through
the Efficiency Conference and other methods to develop the organ-izations
that we have that they may do a better work.
As special work our Presbyterial voted to raise $1,000 to endow
a room in the new dormitory at Peace Institute, giving $250 a year
for four years, and $250 this year towards the domestic science
teacher's salary at Flora Macdonald College.
We have also raised our quota of $110 for the Alice Johnson
Scholarship Fund, and $35 towards furnishing a room at Assembly
Inn by the Synodical. We voted at our September Executive Com-mittee
meeting to raise $5,000 for Dr. Worth to build a nurses'
home at Kyang Yin Hospital.
Special features of the year's work have been the erection of
a memorial tablet in the ladies' parlor of the Frst Presbyterian
Church, Wilmington, commemorating the organization of our Pres-byterial
in that church in 1888, and as a memorial for Mrs. B. F.
Hall, organizer and first President of the Presbyterial.
The completion of the Worth Memorial Fund of $1,000, which
has been used for furnishing an apartment at the N. C. Unit of
Mission Court, Richmond, Va., as a memorial to our beloved mis-sionary
to Kyang Yin, China, Emma Chadbourn Worth.
Appropriate memorial services commemorating the life and
service of our beloved Honorary President, Mrs. Jackson Johnson,
were held at the days of prayer in November and at the Presby-terial.
In April a beautiful memorial service was also held for her
at New Hope, the little church where she worshipped and labored
for so many years, at which time as a gift of love the Presbyterial
Woman's Auxiliary of Synod of N. C. 61
presented a communion table, pulpit furniture and a Bible suitably
inscribed to this church as a memorial for her.
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. W. T.) SARAH E. BANNERMAN.
As President of the Woman's Auxiliary of Winston-Salem Pres-bytery
I beg leave to submit the following report
:
The Winston-Salem Presbytery is one of the youngest in
the Synod, one of the largest in area, but one of the weakest in
membership, due mainly to the past isolation of the mountainous
counties. We number nine counties, thirty-two churches, only nine
of which have full-time pastors, and nineteen Auxiliaries. The women
of these Auxiliaries are interested and working as the report will
show; an increase of members in spite of one Auxiliary disbanding;
in number of Prayer Bands, Family Altars, Tithers, Bible Study
Classes, subscriptions to Prayer Calendars and Mission Study Classes.
This year we have three Blue Seal, six Silver Seal, and one Gold
Seal Auxiliary, the Gold Seal being won by North Wilkesboro.
Seven Auxiliaries sent delegates to the Conference for Colored
Women in Greensboro. One Auxiliary assist in Sunday School
work for colored people, another has a circle of colored women.
The reports of the Secretaries, of course, show an increased
interest and understanding of the work of the church and observ-ance
of the special weeks and days of prayers.
The financial report shows an increase in per capita gifts, but
a decrease in total gifts, due largely to a decrease in Home and
Foreign Missions special gifts. However, we are encouraged by 100
per cent gifts to our only Presbyterial School at Glade Valley,
salary for an Assembly's Training School worker in Stokes County,
White Cross and birthday gifts.
Four Executive meetings and six Group Conferences were held
during the year and an Efficiency Conference lasting one day.
Presbytery honored our Auxiliary by appointing the President
and Secretary of Presbyterial and Synodical Missions as members
of its Home Mission Committee.
We are grateful for the spirit of harmony and co-operation that
exists among the Auxiliaries and pray that we may go forward
"Walking in love as Christ hath also loved us."
Respectfully submitted,
(MRS. E. P.) JANET C. GRAY.
