Standard July 3, 1850 Reidsville, June 24, 1850 Sir: The Raleigh Register of the 22d instant, in relation to my nomination, and my vote on the Bill to establish a Territorial government in Oregon, applies the following language to myself and the Democratic party: "Yet they ask the people of North Carolina to cast their votes for a man who surrendered their rights and honor and opened the citadel to free soilers and abolitionists—aye, to sustain David S. Reid, whose name stands recorded upon the journals of the House of Representatives in favor of the same Bill with the Wilmot Proviso shining forth as its most prominent feature! What a monument of infamy to him is this vote, and what a moanument o( inconsistency of Locofoism is his nomination!" Now I pronounce the charge that 1 have at any time or in any way voted for the Wilmot Povisio, as utterly false. 1 desire this architect, who intends to erect a monument of infamy to me, shall be branded with his true character, that the public may understand him.^
