EASLEY ANNOUNCES $750,000 IN INFRASTRUCTURE GRANTS FOR MITCHELL CO. RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced that the Town of Bakersville will receive a Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Infrastructure Award for $750,000 to improve the town’s drinking water system. Bakersville, located in Mitchell County, is a 21st Century Community. “Community Development Block Grants are vital in our continuing efforts to build solid infrastructure systems in our communities,” said Easley. “This grant will help improve the quality of life for the people of Bakersville, and make it a more attractive place for businesses to locate.” Primarily, the grant will be used to install a disinfectant system to purify the town’s drinking water supply. Funds will also be used to upgrade four well house structures to comply with standards set by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Funds in the Small Cities CDBG Infrastructure category are provided to correct problems that pose a health or environmental risk or to improve the existing public water and/or public sewer infrastructure in residential neighborhoods. This year, two other infrastructure grants have been awarded to Gaston County, which received $687,000, and the Town of Valdese, which received $750,000, The 21st Century Communities program was created by Gov. Easley and the N.C. Department of Commerce to boost economic prospects in North Carolina’s most economically challenged communities through projects that include infrastructure improvement, downtown revitalization, workforce development and tourism planning. There are 16 21st Century Communities across the state. CDBG funds are federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They are distributed to eligible local governments by the state Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Assistance. ###
