Michael F. Easley Governor State of North Carolina Office of the Governor Governor's Press Office State Capitol, Raleigh, NC 27603-8001 (919) 733-5612 - Toll Free 1-800-662-7005 FAX (919) 733-5166 For Release: Immediate Contact: Cari Hepp Date: September 11, 2001 Phone: (919) 733-5612 GOVERNOR EASLEY’S REMARKS Press Briefing on the Terrorist Events Across the U.S. Governor’s Press Conference Room; 9/11/01; 2:00 p.m. Good afternoon. First let me say that our thoughts and our prayers are with the victims of this tragedy, the emergency responders, and their families who are affected by the tragedy. We have had no incidents in North Carolina at this point. According to the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there are no known credible threats to North Carolina at this time. We have taken necessary and appropriate security measures in response to the events occurring in Washington, DC and New York City, including placing all law enforcement agencies on alert and partially activating the State Emergency Response Team this morning. We are ready to assist other states in any way that we can through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. That compact is one in which North Carolina this year is the lead state coordinating emergency response for 42 states and 2 territories. North Carolina is activated to assume our responsibility in this regard. State law enforcement is coordinating with county and city law enforcement. The North Carolina National Guard and Air Guard have been placed on alert. Air Guard C-130s are on standby if needed for transportation and all federal military bases in NC have been placed on alert. All roads currently remain open, although all commercial airports in the country are closed for a period of 48 hours. The State Emergency Response Team, through human services, will do all it can with local airports to see that air passengers are properly housed and fed during this period of delay. I ask all North Carolinians to help by remaining calm and by donating blood for the victims of this tragedy. They are now running short. I would ask that you contact the local Red Cross by calling 1-800-Give-Life. That is 1-800-Give-Life. That is the most important thing we can do at this time as citizens. ###
