it is true every aatehasin itsbrfom thde little infeft f:ul who hover abou a hand-breadth fpot and think it mil the m,irld nay what is worfe there are thofc who venture beyond the limits of their own doma n yet are at war with every thing they meet the climate abrvad is nctfo healthy as that they left the people are rot fo large fo well-bread fo liberal fo polite ib learned--thc hrrfes are not to liandfome and fo fleet the cows give lefc milk the markets are wretched and tiie vegetables are poor . hey find no good tl.inrs except at home grratnefs abilities wealth virtues every thing is meafuied by the extent f the hate or by the length of a navigable river mr chtlds there is yet in america great ( * lack o iederaiifm upon my honor fir i am acquainted itli«//the ftates ef ficiently to inform the inhabitants ef any tnefcu that they mif take e^gregjowfly when they fuppolc they poflefs all the nches the ftrength the wifdom ihe virtues the learning in the world or enough oi them to be the arbitreft of their neighbours ; but the teljtnemsi the proxineial bauuur of certain men is in tolerable 1 hat they ihoold be happier at home than any where elfe is not furpriflng a man who hid paffed his days in p.i fon was happy there and relufed to be releafod : but that fuch amanfhouw treat all others as inferior beings mere pigmies becaufe they could not relifli his cell is it not ftrange ? yet it is a time of wonders in baltimore it was a wonder why that town fhould not be the feat of governmenn in new york it was a wonder why the government fhould be removed the pennfylvaniani wonder that any city fhould be thought of for the feat ot government but philadelphia they wifh them felves the arbiters of the continent and wonder that every body does not wi/h fo too * • pvblificd in the ffilmin^ton cenfmel ef augufi j it will preferve the fhingleson the roofs of houfes as alfo gates pailings c it prevents the intenie heat cf the fua from fplitting and penetrating into the wood and hinders the rain from rotting the timbers and has by long experience been found to be the beft mixture for preferving the roofs and fides of the houfes gates railings c it is attefted that it will preferve plank boards joift c for ages and will prevent the rain from driving through brick and ftone work the materials are eafiiy to be obtained and the work may be done by a common labourer . the proportion of eath article are as joliows : to twelve ounces of rofin put three gallons of train oil and tour roils of brimftonc ; melt the rofin and brim tone in an iron pot and throw in the oil fining it all the time ; when the rofin brimftone and oil is proper ly mixed and become thin add as much spanilh brown or red or yellow oaker or any other colour you want ground as ufual in oil as will give the whole as deep a hade as you choofe then lay it on with a bruih as hot and as thin as you can four days after this tirft coat is dried give it a fecond and you ajre done with it the cover ing of very flat roofs are faid to have . been preferved upwards of fifty years it effectually preserves iron that is con ftantly expofed from rufting rum and sugar p o r sale on board the brigantine nancy capt b leach from martinico now lying at mr w campbell's wharf f excellent weft-india rum and sugar of the firfl quality which will be fold cheap for cafh wholcfaie and retail wanted on board faid veflcl a quantity of tar and pitctf and a number of white oak staves for which a generous price will be given s o n e s every man as shandy fays has his nobby-horfe—it is «""*'"' hcwcvcr ' that ail men hav e o in their bodies a jufficient number could they be content but they muft fcr w>t h a vsrther*eba 1 bone is a good place—look at him while he p:<*sit whatafnarlinghemakes it any one dares but ap proach it ; there he keeps gnawinp.and gnawing until a wronger cu r frarches it from him yet he never loofes fight of his fa vourite bone fr33e from the dominico gazette i two great dogs fnarled for many years about a bone and joft as they were about to divide it amicably in came a little pup py and thatching up the bone ran away with it , > he la-wytr has his bone a good fee—which he keeps mum r pimgat until he can get 60 more marrow then leaves off in hopes o f another ihefw/mhasan ecclefiafticauc-v a gocd living ; no cur t tarts more when he has got it but be is * fpaniel all over bc t v he following com pofition is not x only a cheap but mod excellent prefervative for all kinds of timber ex pofed to the weather of this climate
