Welcome to the digital collections of the State Archives of North Carolina and the State Library of North Carolina.

African American Education

This collection contains documents and photographs related to African American education in North Carolina before 1950 drawn from the collections of the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum and the State Archives of North Carolina.

Alien Registration and Naturalization

This collection contains Alien Registration and Naturalization materials from the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina. 

Architectural Survey Reports

An important component of every architectural survey is the report that is prepared at the end of the project.

Aycock Brown Photographs

The Aycock Brown Photograph digital collection contains a variety of images taken by Brown starting in the 1940s.

Biographies and Histories of the NC Supreme Court

Numerous biographies and histories are included in volumes of the North Carolina Reports, the published opinions of the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Black Mountain College

The Black Mountain College digital collection includes a selection of school publications and photographs primarily from The Black Mountain College Research Project, which was conducted by the North Carolina Museum of Art. Many other materials on Black Mountain College are available for research at the Western Regional Archives in Asheville, N.C.

Brimley Photograph Collection

The Brimley Collection is named for Herbert Hutchinson Brimley, the first Curator (and later, first Director) of The North Carolina State Museum of Natural History.

Capital Buildings

The Capital Buildings digital collection features correspondence, legal documents, and financial records related to the building and maintenance of the capital buildings in North Carolina.

Carolina Christmas

This digital collection includes a selection of materials related to celebrations of the Christmas, New Years, and Thanksgiving holidays. 

Census Data

Hundreds of census profiles compiled by the State Data Center (SDC) in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s are full-text searchable as part of the North Carolina Census Data collection.

Civil Rights

This digital collection contains materials related to the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina from the 1950s to the 1970s, including letters, speeches, reports, booklets, photographs, news clippings, court records, and proposed legislation.

Civil War

The Civil War digital collection is a joint project of the State Archives and State Library of North Carolina. 

Cohabitation Records

This collection contains Cohabitation Bonds that were filed with the register of deeds of each county and legitimized the marriages of former enslaved peoples after an act established in 1866.

Colonial Court Records

The Colonial Court Records digital collection includes three series from holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina: Civil and Criminal Action Papers, Other Courts, 1669-1775 (CCR.193), Estate Papers (CCR.179-CCR.186), and Land Papers (CCR.187).

Confederate Pension Applications

This collection contains the 1885 and 1901 Confederate pension applications from the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina. Application forms for Confederate pensions, sometimes includes correspondence or additional affidavits regarding a soldier's or widow's claim. 

Council on the Status of Women

The first predecessor of the present-day council was the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, established in 1963 by executive order of Governor Terry Sanford.

Court Reports

Over 200 years of court reports from the NC Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

Cultural Heritage Institutions of North Carolina, NC ECHO Project

View photographs from site visits to North Carolina cultural heritage institutions, during the original NC ECHO project.

Daily Bulletin

The Daily Bulletin has been published by the UNC School of Government’s Legislative Reporting Service since 1935.

District Superior Court Records

The District Superior Court Records digital collection currently contains only one district, Edenton District, from 1756 to 1806. Writs, transcripts, narratives, inventories of estates, notes, bonds, appeals, and subpoenas relating to the settlement of estates in the counties under the jurisdiction of the Edenton District Superior Court.

Family Records

The Family Records Collection is comprised of North Carolina family history materials from the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina and State Library of North Carolina.

Federal and State Constitutional Materials

This collection contains federal and state constitutions and amendments found within the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina. 

Food and Cooking Collection

This artificial online collection includes food and cooking related materials from the collections of the State Archives of North Carolina.

Future Homemakers Associations

Future Homemakers of America and New Homemakers of America associations officially began in 1945, focusing on education in family and consumer sciences.

General Assembly Session Records

The General Assembly Session Records digital collection features records of early North Carolina state legislatures found within the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina.

Good Neighbor Council

On January 18, 1963, Governor Terry Sanford established the Good Neighbor Council. The council consisted of 24 citizens appointed by the governor. 

Governors Papers, Historical

The Historical Governors’ Papers collection is an ongoing digitization project and will eventually include the correspondence of many of North Carolina’s early governors. These materials are from the collections of the State Archives of North Carolina and each group of correspondence will be indexed by month and year. 

Governors Papers, Modern

This collection contains modern governors papers from the State of Archives of North Carolina. Currently the online collection includes the administrations of Governors James B. Hunt, Jr., James G. Martin, Mike Easley, Bev Perdue, and Pat McCrory.

Legacy Finding Aids

This collection includes legacy finding aids available in paper format in the State Archives Search Room. Finding aids are narrative descriptions of archival materials and often provide more detailed information about individual collections than can be found in the State Archives Discover Online Catalog (DOC), including box and folder lists.

Library History

The Library History Digital Collection is a statewide collaborative digital project that provides access to digital versions of historical photographs, postcards, reports, dedications, and other unique materials related to North Carolina's libraries.

North Carolina Folklore Journal

Explore past issues of The North Carolina Folklore Journal (NCFJ), which has been in publication since 1948. Published by the North Carolina Folklore Society, NCFJ features studies of North Carolina folklore and folklife, analyses of folklore in Southern literature, and articles whose rigorous or innovative approach pertains to local folklife study.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

This collection includes textual and visual resources about the Museum, its history, collections, and research. For more information, contact the museum library at: hhbrimleylibrary@gmail.com

North Carolina Ports

The Ports series comprises a comprehensive collection of shipping accounts, entries, clearances, and various records from North Carolina’s ports, spanning from the colonial period to the late nineteenth century.

North Carolina State Parks

Welcome to the North Carolina State Parks digital collection, a trove of materials relating to the natural and cultural history of the state parks system gathered from the holdings of the State Archives, State Library and N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. 

Office of Archives and History Research Reports

This collection of 100+ research reports with in-depth information about famous North Carolinians, historic homes and landmarks, and sites of interest to military historians, such as Haywood Hall, the Cape Fear Civil War shipwreck district, and New Bern Academy.

Oral History Materials

This collection contains oral histories from the Oral History Unit, established in 2019. This unit gathers oral histories from around the state in coordination with department goals and campaigns.

Our State Magazine

Explore past issues of Our State, one of North Carolina's longest running and most popular magazines. First published in 1933, The State (as it was known until 1996) features stories about North Carolina's people, places, and history.

Raleigh History

A selection of original documents covering the history of Raleigh going back to the capital's founding and early construction.

Records of Enslaved People in Private Collections

The digital collection draws from a selection of private collections, offering glimpses into different points in the lives of enslaved individuals such as purchases, sales, births, and deaths. The collection includes, but is not limited to, bills of sale, correspondence, inventories, lists, wills, and administrative records.

Regulator Movement

The Regulator Movement was a brief uprising in eastern North Carolina from 1768 to 1771, before the start of the American Revolution.

Revolutionary War Era

The American Revolutionary War, 1775 to 1783, secured the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and established a constitutional democracy. 

School Planning Building Photographs

The Department of Public Instruction School Photographs digital collection includes a sample of photographs from the Department of Public Instruction, School Planning Section, School Photographs Files. The photographs initially selected document school conditions and construction efforts in African American communities across the state in the years c. 1918-1955. 

SECCA

This collection contains exhibition catalogs in traditional and non-traditional formats published by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), which was founded in 1956 as a non-profit visual arts organization.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Digital Collection is an attempt to highlight a representative sample of the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina related to the STEM fields, and is not meant to be an exhaustive list.

Secretary of State Wills

The North Carolina Secretary of State Wills Digital Collection, contains wills from 1663 to 1789. These are loose original wills probated in the province. 

Selections from Print Collections

A small selection of books from the State Library's collection of books on North Carolina and the South.

Senate Audio

This collection consists of links to digitized audio recordings of the North Carolina Senate daily legislative sessions from the North Carolina General Assembly. 

Speaker Ban Law

This collection includes correspondence, photographs, transcripts, audio recordings, articles and other items related to the Speaker Ban Study Commission.

State Fair Ephemera

This collection features digitized North Carolina State Fair materials like premium lists, programs, and photographs. Most of the digitized materials are from the State Library's collection.

Tax Lists and Records

The Tax Lists and Records digital collection features tax records from the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina drawn from General Assembly, Treasurer & Comptroller, and Secretary of State records.

Travel and Tourism Photos

The Travel and Tourism Photos digital collection includes a selection of materials from North Carolina Conservation and Development Department, Travel and Tourism Division Photo Files, part of the collections of the State Archives of North Carolina. 

Travel Perspectives

The Travel Perspectives digital collection features narratives and images of tourism as experienced by North Carolinians, found within the holdings of the State Archives of North Carolina.

Treasures

The Vault Collection [or the “Treasures” of the State Archives of North Carolina] is an artificial collection created to highlight and preserve those rare manuscripts that enhance the history of the “Old North State” and its citizens. 

Troop Returns

This collection is comprised of Troop Returns from the State Archives of North Carolina Military Collection. Troop Returns (1747-1893) include lists, returns, records of prisoners, and records of draftees.

Veterans Oral History Collection

The North Carolina Veterans Oral History Collection is composed of more than 1,100 interviews. Since 1996 the Military Collection at the State Archives of North Carolina has conducted them as part of the North Carolina Veterans Oral History Program. 

Voter Registration

The Voter Registration digital collection is an ongoing project, and additional items will be added as they are digitized. Ratified in 1870, the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

War of 1812 Pay Vouchers

War of 1812 Pay Vouchers consists of some 5000 vouchers, also called certificates. Vouchers were issued in lieu of cash by the governor after the auditor had validated a claim. 

Wildlife in North Carolina Magazine

Wildlife in North Carolina magazine is the official educational publication of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, dedicated to the conservation of North Carolina's wildlife and natural habitats.

Women in North Carolina 20th Century History

As part of the celebration of Women’s History Month, the State Archives of North Carolina launched “Women in North Carolina: 20th Century History.” This collection provides a glimpse into the lives of North Carolina women as they changed history in our state and the nation. 

Women, Marriage and the Law

The materials in the "Women, Marriage and the Law" collection were selected for inclusion in the "Studies in Scarlet" Project, organized and partially funded by the Research Libraries Group.

World War I

This collection includes World War I materials from the collections of the State Library and State Archives of North Carolina. 

World War II

This digital collection includes a sample of World War II materials from the Military Collection of the State Archives of North Carolina.
