Public Documents of N.C., in the State Government Publications Collection, consist of biennial reports of state agencies to the Governor from 1842-1919. They contain such diverse information as the diet of Insane Asylum patients in 1893 to the average monthly salary of teachers in 1870 ($24).

The Archives' Treasures collection includes documents with presidential signatures like this letter from George Washington to the Governor and Council, 1790.

Since 1914, the state has compiled and reported population, birth, and death data for all 100 NC counties. These vital statistics reports are used by state government to plan health-related services, and can be found in the State Government Publications Collection.

From 1933 to 1955, the state's prison system was supervised by the State Highway and Public Works Commission. You can see the Biennial Report of the State's Prison in the State Government Publications Collection.
