A BRIEF HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE ORIGIN OF THE
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN SAMPSON COUNTY
In 1831 the Rev. Alec Mclver, traveling as a Missionary Agent,
visited and preached at Clinton. At this time several persons pro-fessed
a preference for the Presbyterian Church, came together and
were organized into a church known as Shiloh: Mrs. Mary Holmes,
Mrs. Sarah Holmes, Mrs. Catherine Holmes, Miss Elizabeth Holmes,
Mrs. Penelope Morrisey, Mrs. Penelope Whitfield, Mrs. Catherine
Stevens, and Miss Lucy Sampson. And at the next sacramental
meeting Patrick Murphy, an elder from the South River congre-gation,
and John Sellers from Black River congregation, were also
admitted as members and became the first elders. Miss Lucy Samp-son
was received as a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church, upon her application without certificate. Later Mr. Edward
Whitfield, Mrs. Isaiah Thompson, Mrs. Marium Thompson, David
Treadwell, Miss Mary Blackman, Miss Jane Carr, Miss Sallie J.
Thompson were added to the membership. Miss India Holmes and
Mrs. Eliza Wright were baptised.
Rev. Mr. Mclver, assisted by Duncan Campell, a licentiate, held
a meeting at Lisbon and Miss Mary Cromartie, Archibald Murphy.
David Smith, Isaac Wright, Mrs. Nancy Treadwell, Mrs. Charlotte
Murphy and Miss Ann Moriah Treadwell were received as mem-bers.
J The first organization was known as Shiloh Church, located
about four miles east of Clinton on the old Warsaw road upon lands
donated by Samuel A. Bunting.
At a Presbytery held in Clinton the first of November, 1832,
Mrs. Lucinda Smith, Mrs. Anna Sellers, Miss Ann Thompson, Mrs.
Pearson and Mrs. Currie were admitted as members. In July, 1832,
Miss Sallie M. Mosley was baptised and received as member of the
Church. In November, 1832, Miss Eliza Morisey and Mrs. Nancy
Campbell were received upon certificates.
The records show that Mrs. Mary Holmes, widow of the Hon.
Gabriel Holmes, died at the residence of her brother, Mr. Theophelus
Hunter, near Raleigh, N. C, September 11th, 1833, in the triumph
of faith and the blessed hope of immortality beyond the grave.
Mrs. Margaret Faison, a member of the Presbyterian Church of
Black River Chapel, New Hanover County, presented a letter of dis-missal
and was received as a member of this Church.
At a meeting held at Shiloh Church, April 26th, 1840, present
Rev. Hector McNeill and Mr. M. C. Conoley, a licentiate of the
Presbytery, was present and Susan Elizabeth Mosley upon profession
was baptised and admitted to the privileges of the Church; and in
March 27th, 1841, at South River the minutes of the Session were
approved by Evander McNair, Moderator.
At a meeting held October 8th, 1842, present M. C. Conoley, as-sisted
by Rev. Robert Tate, Mary E. Moseley, Mary G. Thompson
and Hinton Carr were received as members, and on March 26th,
1843, Samuel A. Bunting and wife, Eliza Ann Bunting were ad-mitted
upon an examination of their religious experiences.
At a Sacramental meeting held at Unity Church in Sampson
County, near the former residence of John Bryant, on the 25th day
of June, 1843, present the Rev. Colon Shaw and Patrick Murphey,
elders of Shiloh Church, Mrs. Eliza A. Murphey and Mrs. Mary
Matthis were received upon their profession and admitted to mem-

bership in Shiloh Church. And later Mrs. Mary Ann Stevens and
Mrs. Mary Moore, Mrs. Frances Morisey, Mrs. Susan A. Shaw, Miss
Isabella Williams and Miss Mary A. Buie were admitted. Later Dr.
Elias Faison Shaw, Dr. William I. Thompson and Miss Virginia
Smith, Miss Mary W. Thompson. Miss Catherine Wright, and
Josiah Johnson, the latter being baptised by Rev. James M. Sprunt,
December 4th, 1853.
During this period, from 1831 to 1854, Patrick Murphey, Isiah
Thompson and Josiah Johnson acted as clerks of the Session. In
the year 1849 the Church building and school house out on the
Warsaw road were destroyed by fire and the congregation then
worshipped in the lower part of the Masonic Lodge Building, cor-ner
of Chesnut and Sycamore Streets, which was used as a school
room. There the congregation worshipped until the new church'
was erected in 1855. The following are subscribers to the new
church: Mrs. E. J. Beatty, H. E. Carr, Thomas Bunting, Samuel A.
Holmes, H. A. Bizzell, Eliza Faison, Patrick Murphey, J. L. Boykin,
A. E. McCoy, A. Corbitt, James A. Bizzell, Isiah Thompson, C. H.
Stevens, A. B. Chesnut, Alfred Johnson, Isaac C. Wright, Isaac Boy-kin,
David Underwood, William C. Howard, F. A. Sillers, William
Williamson. James H. Stevens, Francis Pugh, William T. Kirby,
P. Cromartie, John Royall, R. A. Mosley, J. H. Roberts, S. B. Killett.
This church building was located on the site of the present
Manse lot now occupied by the Rev. George M. Matthis, and the
congregation worshipped there until it was destroyed by fire in the
year 1906.
The minutes of the old Shiloh church are very entertaining
—
showing how the session was in the habit of disciplining its mem-bers,
and some marriages and also the baptism of the children are
fully recorded, and I desire to instance one case: On Sunday, May
8th, 1842, Isiah Thompson and wife, Marium Thompson, presented
their children, Marium Cornelia, and others, professing it their de-sire
to dedicate them to God in the ordinance of baptism. It was
accordingly administered to them by the Rev. M. C. Conoley at
their own residence in Sampson County. At the same time and
place, Patience, a slave, the property of Isiah Tompson and a mem-ber
of Shiloh church, presented her children, John, Lawrence, Betsy,
Thomas and Louisa, and professing it her desire to dedicate them
to God in the ordinance of baptism. It was accordingly adminis-tered
to them by the Rev. M. C. Conoley, concluded by Prayer. And
thus it would seem that this congregation and this community
treated their slaves in a manner that completely refutes the argu-ment
of Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe in Uncle Tom's Cabin which
so inflamed the Northern minds against the Southern people.

The Rev. George M. Gibbs was called to the pastorate of the
new church and Mr. Robert Tate also filled the pulpit at times, and
under their administrations the cause of Zion flourished in this
community.
And in addition to the Revs. Gibbs and Tate the congregation
was occasionally served by the Revs. James M. Sprunt and Colon
Shaw, and the regular ministers that served the congregation after
them were the Revs. B. F. Marable, N. C. Graves, Thomas Johnson,
Alec Kirkland, B. F. Marable again, Peter Mclntyre, Joseph Evans,
R. M. Mann, P. L. Clark, James Thomas, and our present, popular
minister, the Rev. George M. Matthis.
Following the old clerks of the session were L. C. Graves, Wil-liam
H. Holmes, Warren Johnson, A. F. Johnson—upon whose death
his mantel fell upon his son, Ferdinand Badger Johnson, present
clerk of the Session.
The old board of Elders—Patrick Murphey, John Sellers and
Isiah Thompson were followed by L. A. Graves, W. H. Holmes, War-ren
Johnson, James W. Wright, B. F. Grady, Thomas L. Graves,
Thomas J. Morisey, Edwin W. Kerr, James K. Morisey, W. K. Pig-ford,
Wm. Gaston Rackley, and A. F. Johnson.
With the destruction of this building in 1906, together with the
large and spacious Sunday School Rooms attached, the congrega-tion
was in sore distress, and its membership was put to the neces-sity
of calling upon the former members and non-residents for aid,
and this request was generously answered by the son of Mr. L. C.
Graves, N. C. Graves Jr., of Philadelphia, Pa., who came forward
and expressed the wish to furnish the means to build a new church
in memory of his father and the Graves family who had founded
the Seminary at Clinton for the education of the women of this
section of the state. The congregation unanimously acceded to
this request and this new brick church was presented to the con-gregation
on his behalf, and the same was formally dedicated in
1908, just twenty-one years ago. The dedicatory exercises having
been performed in the person of Dr. McLeod of New Jersey.
The growth and development of the church for the last twenty
years has been phenominal as a perusal of its minutes will show.
Its reports to the different sessions of the Presbytery indicates large
spiritual growth and that this portion of the Lord's Vineyard is well
cultivated, under the capable services of its present pastor, his
faithful wife and co-laborer, together with its active membership
of the Ladies Societies, its Board of Elders and Deacons.
There have gone out from this congregation to break the word
of life, and carry the glad Gospel, the following ministers: M. C.
Conoley, H. B. Garris, W. H. Darden, Stedman Black, A. L. Phillips,
Neill A. Anderson, George M. Matthis.
