A acknowledgement
The Rachel Coldwell Chapter NSBA R is indebted to Miss
Edith M. Clark, director of Rowan Public Library, Salisbury, Korth
Carolina for these records of The Jersey Baptist Meeting House 1784.-1852.
The records came to the Rowan Public Library as a gift,
being material collected by the late Mrs. J. Frank MeCubbins of
Salisbury. Mrs, McCubbins had worked approximately sixty yesrs
getting abstracts of church records, official county recorcs and
many individual iamily records. She was an accurate genealogist
and her work is extremely valuable to present day research.
A Story of i^lfe Itself
JER3I& CHURCH HAS SXPcKIEKCiaS
BLOODSHED, PAKIC, COKTROViJiSlED
(Editor's Notes This article was prepared

Hendricks of Southeastern Baptiet Seminary,
Wake Forest*}
L£XIKaTON, Way 16 * The story of Jersey Baptiet
Church is a sweeping panorama of history, sprawling
through more than two centuries of worship and disci*
pline, pioneer bloodshed , lust and controversy.
The story of the Jersey Settlement in Yadkin River
Valley, eight miles south of Lexington, la a story of
life itself* These people feared, loved, hated, sin-ned
against each other find their Clod through a tumul-tuous
founding period.
The Settlement was born in the early 1750' a, sired by
young, a bitious families from Kew Jersey who migrated
to the fertile Yadkin River Valley.
TWO &IMSTERS CAJ& SOUTH
In 1754 two ministers were sent south through the
Philadelphia Association of Baptist Churches, which
showed a growing concern over the need for strengthen-ing
church work in the Carolines, where worshipers
still practiced foot washing, anointing of the sick
end the kiss of charity.
Cne of these men was John Qano, a natural leader.
Early records indicate It was in 1755 when Gano and a
companion, Benjamin Killer, were instrumental in
gathering a group of Jersey Settlers for worship with
some degree of regularity.
On Nov ember 15, 1757, Gano and his family, a handful
of possessions and a heart full of filth, arrived in
the valley. He built a log dwelling for his family on
the banks of Swearing Creek.
bui i.j> wssnm house
Bf the first of July, the settlers had completed their
meeting house on a gentle hilltop overlooking the rich
valley*
Through the later 1750*8 there was a teaselve influx
into the valley as Hew Bnglanders slowly oarved pioneer
wilderness into civilis&stlon. They were soon faced,
however, with two almost Insurmountable problems*
One was with the Indians* small bands of Cfaerofcees and
Oatawbas who showed their resentment against white
settlers* Unprotected families were brutally murdered*
The second problem was of a religious nature. The
30,000 colonists who settled Central and Western Horth
Carolina from 17^0 * 1760 represented many religious
groups * Quaker, 3aptist, Presbyterian, Lutheran,
Methodist, Moravian, German Reformed*
RESIST CHURCH OP SH8LAHD
But the predominant church in what was then still a
British colony was the Church of ijigland* Its ministers,
educated in £ngland» did not appeal to toe common people
of the colony* The Jersey Settlers, as a result, were
soon swept up in the heat of political controversy*
In the next decade, they were to engage in a struggle
which would have a towering effect across the colonies *
the struggle between the "Regulators** and imposition of
taxation and the Established Church*
Upon formation of Rowan County in 1753, a courthouse was
built and Governor Dobbs ssnt officers, attorneys and tax
collectors to be supported by the settlers' taxes.
County taxes, poll taxes and a vestry tax were imposed
with the Vestry Act providing "that the clergy may have
a decent and comfortable maintenance and support**
Freedom-loving Baptists did not believe in paying taxes
to support ministers of the Church of liigl&nd*
John Oano was a natural leader in a protest group of
some TOO people who met in 1758 to formulate a set of
articles, one calling for end of the Vestries. This
incident began a long* bitter struggle between free
religious settlers and forces of early colonial
government*
In 1759, political disputes waned slightly as an all-out
effort was waged to conquer the warring Cherokees.

incident began a long t bitter struggle between free
religious settlers and forces of early colonial
government*
In 1759, political disputes waned slightly as an all-out
effort was waged to conquer the warring Cherokees.
The Creeks had Joined the Gherokees In war against
settlers, forcing ©any to flee and the remaining ones
to huddle in their fortified homes.
Oano decided the obligation to protect his family was
as great as his duty to the settlement. He returned
to New Jersey, later becoming a chaplain in Oem
o-eorge Washington's Revolutionary forces.
BATTLE OF ALAKAHCE
In 1763 1 the Indians were defeated and settlers began
to flow back to Yadkin Valley, Attention was re-focused
on the tax controversy* Baptists and other
dissenters were frustrating Qk>v. William Tryon* s plan
for the Established Church.
Tryon decided to destroy opposition of the Regulators
and in the Battle of Alamance he defeated them* He
knew, however, that much of his opposition remained
at Sandy Creek, Abbotts Creek, Jersey Settlement and
other Yadkin Valley settlements. Tryon enlarged his
army and swept across Baptist neighborhoods, laying
plantations to wast© and taking captives to Hlllsboro
for trial as outlaws and traitors*
One of the thees captives was Benjamin Kerrlll, who
helped found Jersey Church. Ke was sentenced to death
by hanging. Mrs. Merrill with her children viewed the
terrible exeoution. She later became blind, some say
from the excessive grief at the hideous death of her
husband. She never recovered from the shock.
CHURCH KSOROAKIZ23)
The Baptists had been disorganized by Tryon's attacks,
Indian wars and the American Revolutionary activity.
They decided to reorganize their church. It had been
29 years since aano and Millar began their missionary
ministry at Jersey Settlement.
By 1788, farmers of the Settlement had become more
prosperous along with the church, kembership had
grown to 38. By 1795$ activities were being extended
to nearby settlements and at the end of 1797, member*
ship had reached 95.
Church discipline began in early 1738 when the first
member was excommunicated by vote of the members. In
1806 excommunications continued and several persons
were excluded from the church for various deeds of
misconduct.
J>
In 1843 a brick building was completed and .Elder Josiah
.vises; an assumed the pastorate at a salary of ^100
annually*
Dancing became- a controversial issue and was finally
outlawed by the church. In 1859 » alcohol beoase the
major disciplinary problem.
Slfig DEPKI2ESI0K YLfciS
At the turn of the century, the Jersey congregation re-modeled
its church building and showed a broader con-cern
about religion* The church stumbled through
growing pains and relapses, then mired into the
depression years, tfhen the depression began to fade,
Jersey Church continued to sake advances, and by I960
bad 267 resident members and 50 non-resident.
The church had evolved from meager nestings in settlors*
homes, to a #65,000 church plant with a full-time pastor
&nd a #20,000 annual budget.
In 1961, the congregation received a special achieve-tsent
award presented by the Baptist State Convention*
But Jersey Church is basically still the same church
it was two centuries before, fighting the see© battles,
the same spiritual straggles.
