By God's Grace we have succeeded thus far, and with his love we have been able to evaluate the
past and develop the pictures of 108 years. The members of this church focused their hearts on
Jesus in Love and the magnifying of his glory.
History will identify people of strong determinations, true convictions, to lead the way for future
generations to build on. This book illustrates a sincere attempt for our generation of 1987 to
re-evaluate the bonds of the past. We will define our struggle with those of 108 years, and pass them
on for future generations as their foundation.
Freedom is being able to serve God in churches, schools, communities and any private or public
way, and to educate our children as to why we hold God as our true Savior at Johnston Piney Grove
Missionary Baptist Church. As we grow, our lives will be full of love, our children will be better
educated, our problem of drug abuse will go away with Jesus in the heart, our economy will give
blacks opportunities, our brothers and sisters in Africa can be free or apartheid, our parents will
teach Christ in the home, our missionary start-up programs will develop. Our hearts will give love
and trust that can be the kind of trust that God intended for it to be, from brother to brother, sister
to sister.
The Centennial Committee would like to thank friends, communities, businesses, members and
Johnston Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, for letting us record the pictures of our origin
and donate this composed information for present and future generations to come.

We wish to extend our appreciation to all who contributed unselfishly to this work of
love.
The historians are especially grateful to everyone who helped us in our extensive
research in order to present to you a history worthy of passing to the future generations.
We sincerely hope that we've laid a historical foundation that is sturdy enough for others
to build upon.
Any omissions or errors are truly not intentional and we ask your forgiveness if this has
happened.

TO: THE OFFICERS, MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF
THE JOHNSTON PINEY GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH
OF CLAYTON, NORTH CAROLINA ON THE CELE-BRATION
OF 108 YEARS OF HOLDING ON TO
GOD'S UNCHANGING HANDS.
One hundred and eight years ago God impressed upon someones heart to be the genesis of what
now has produced a great work. The flower garden is still beautiful, even though some of the
flowers have been removed. God has seen fit to replenish the garden with new flowers in order that
the garden may maintain its wonderful beauty.
On this occasion, I would like to commend everyone for their hard work, prayers, and the
sacrifices that it took to produce such an accomplishment. My humble prayer is for you not toallow
the torch to burn out, but to pass it on to the next generation as it has been done in the past.
As the word of God says, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
"
(Psalms 121:1) Keep looking to and trusting in God.

STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR
RALEIGH 27611
JAMES G. MARTIN
GOVERNOR
August 1 , 1987
To the Congregation of Johnston Piney Grove Baptist Church:
As the Governor of North Carolina, it is my great pleasure to
join you in celebrating the one-hundred and eighth
anniversary of Johnston Piney Grove Baptist Church.
The past one hundred and eight years have been years of
challenge and change, years in which your church fellowship
has learned to struggle and grow in faith. Together you have
built more than a church; you have built a family in Christ,
filled with people who share the same beliefs and who work
together to bring their love of God to one another and to the
community
.
I wish you all the best as you join together to celebrate
this special occasion, and hope that the next one hundred
years will provide you with even greater joy and peace in
Christ's love.
Sincerely,
0,/mes G. Martin

^Historical
1879 - 1987
Seeing the need for a tangible edifice to the glory of God, for his goodness in times of
plenty and his mercy in trial and tribulation, our forefathers founded the Johnston Piney
Grove Missionary Baptist Church in January, 1879.
The first church was reportedly a bush arbor on Duncan Hill, three miles southeast of
Clayton, N.C. (This location was across from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Williamson
who live on Ranch Road.) This first structure was destroyed by fire, but out of misery and
misfortune often comes a closer relationship with God and the revelation of the goodness
of human nature. This positive revelation occurred when Mr. and Mrs. Guilford Poole gave
one-half (V2) acre of land for the construction of another building. This time the church
was built approximately two and one-half miles (2V/) from Duncan Hill. It was rebuilt
under the leadership of Reverend Essex Blake and trustees: Thomas Hodges and
Needham Tomlinson. Behind these men stood a small but determined church
membership. The congregation met for one church service per month, prayer service every
Wednesday evening and a yearly revival.
As the membership increased, a larger structure was needed. This was accomplished by
building around the original structure under the watchful eye of Mr. Walter Lassiter,
contractor from Smithfield, N.C. This building served its members well for many years.
Later, under the guidance of Reverend James A. Avery, bathrooms and a kitchen were
added in a basement area with Reverend William H. Burwell acting as contractor.
An increasing membership and an aging building again demanded more additions or a
new building. Land was purchased from Reverend John H. Merritt and later traded to Mr.
Uzzell Barnes and wife for a more convenient location.
The groundbreaking for the new building was held on March 3, 1974 and the church
was completed in December, 1975. This was accomplished under the pastoral leadership
of Reverend Luther Coppedge and trustees: John A. Moore, Bobby Peacock, Willie J.
Holder, Leonard Barnes, Sr., Oscar Sanders, Schofield Gardner and Robert Emory. The
first service was held on February 3, 1976 with Reverend Luther Coppedge taking as his
initial sermon in the new sanctuarv," Unless God Build The House", Psalms 127:1.
1 I
The Cornerstone Service was held on Saturday, March 6, 1976 with Reverend Larry
Williams, a brick mason by trade, laying the cornerstone. Reverend Willis S. Wall, a son of
the church and pastor of Zion Baptist Church, Hilltop, Maryland brought the spiritual
message for this service.
Realizing the need for more religious training and spiritual growth, we added third and
fifth Sunday services to our monthly schedule. Our first Third Sunday Service was held
on August 18, 1976 with Reverend Gaddis Barnes, a son of the church and pastor of St.
Amanda and New Light Baptist Churches, bringing the morning message. We continued
to grow and prosper.
The church went through a period of re-organization from November 4, 1983 to April,
1985. During a portion of this period, Reverend James R. Fogg served as interim pastor.
Reverend Joseph R. Rogers, Sr. accepted the call to serve as our permanent spiritual
leader, and preached his initial sermon on Sunday, April 21 , 1985. He chose as his topic "The
Ideal Church". Reverend Rogers was officially installed on Sunday, October 20, 1985 at 3
o'clock with Reverend C.C. Crum, pastor of First Baptist Church, Holly Springs and
Moderator of the Johnston District Baptist Association bringing the installation message.
On Sunday, June 30, 1985 we held our Mortgage Burning Ceremony at the 11 o'clock
morning service. Community leaders present and participating in the occasion were: Mr.
Stanley Green, Sr.; Vice President of Mechanic and Farmers Bank (our mortgage holder),
Mr. James W. Cash, Johnston County Commissioner, Mr. Nathaniel L. Sanders, Jr., a
Clayton Town Councilman and Mr. James A. Bailey, Mayor of Clayton, N.C.
Reverend Willis S. Wall, our Spiritual mentor, during re-organization, again came to
our call and delivered as the Mortgage Burning Ceremony Message" "The Wax God Leads
His Children", Exodus 13:21-22.
Mr. John A. Moore, our eldest trustee and the person instrumental in initiating the fund
tor the building of the new church was given the privilege of burning the mortgage. We
were out of debt and progressing.
Feeling the need for a closer Christian Fellowship and a desire for spiritual growth in
our re-organized church, we voted to hold services every Sunday morning, beginning on
Sunday, January 4, 1987. The response was overwhelming.
On Sunday, May 24, 1987 Gregory M. Smith, son of Deacon and Mrs. Robert R. Smith
and a member of the church, preached his initial sermon under the watchful eyes and
listening ears of Reverend Joseph R. Rogers, Sr., Reverend Marian Glenn, second vice-moderator
of the Johnston District Baptist Association; Reverend Stanley Ballentine,
15
President of the Ministers and Deacons Union; Reverend Thomas McCullers, Educational
Director, and Reverend Gaddis Barnes and Irvin Davis, sons of the church along with a
very receptive congregation. This was the first calling under the leadership of Reverend
Rogers.
We have come this far by the power of God and the leadership of Reverends Essex Blake,
John Jeffries, David Saulter, Tom Fuller, Richard Johnson, Hinton Jones, James Avery,
Clarence Dunn, James Powell, James A. Avery, Luther Coppedge and Joseph R. Rogers, Sr.
These ministers were and are supported by Deacons, Guilford Poole, Tommie Poole, Alford
Sanders, Henry Matthews, Neal Henry Smith, Monroe Miles, Jim Jones, Donnie Jones,
Parker Finch, Wright Barnes, George Smith, Ira Trotter, Donnie Sanders, Archie
Lassiter, G.G. Barnes, Garner Williamson, Willie Williams, Alexander Tomlinson,
Michael Barnes, Robert R. Smith, Willie J. Holder and Lawrence Cotton, Jr.
The present Trustee Board includes: John A. Moore, Emeritus; Leonard Barnes, Sr.,
Amos Williamson, Bobby R. Peacock, Joe T. Barnes, Billy Wall, Wardell Morgan, Charlie
Mangum, Leonard Barnes, Jr., Leamon Lassiter and David C. Smith.
These members were called into the ministry: Reverends Robert Bell, Paul White,
Charlie Wall, Frank Emory, Odell Williamson, Willis Wall, Samuel Morgan, Irvin Davis,
Gaddis Barnes and Gregory M. Smith.
Lastly, these members have served as secretaries without whose records we would have
omitted some of our church's beginning historical facts; Henry Jones, Grover Sanders,
Donnie Jones, Sr., Donnie Jones, Jr., Narner Williamson, Odell Williamson, Archie Lassiter,
Amos Williamson and Lee V. Clemmons.
In spite of trials and many tribulations, God has truly smiled on us. We have come this
far by faith, and through it all, we have learned to lean on and trust in God. For any and all
accomplishments that we have realized, "To God Be the Glory.
"

JOHN A. MOORE
1987
Mr. John Arthur Moore, a trustee of the Johnston Piney Grove Missionary Baptist
Church was instrumental in beginning a building fund for the purpose of building a new
sanctuary. He began this fund with a ten dollar bill from his wallet. When the church
membership began to seriously consider building, Mr. John Arthur volunteered to oversee
the project. His services were accepted. When the church was completed and ready for
use, Mr. John Arthur began talking about paying off the mortgage. This was a sermon that
was preached whenever there were more than two people and Mr. John Arthur was
present. He did not want to leave this world with a mortgage on "his church".
On Sunday, June 30, 1985, Mr. John Arthur was privileged toburn themortgageon "his
church".
/ do not ask to walk smooth paths, nor bear an easy load. I pray for strength andfortitude to
walk the rock strewn road. "Remember me".
