PUBLICATION OF THE
BLADEN COUNTY BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION
ELIZA3ETHT0WN, NORTH CAROLINA
THE HISTORY OF MOUNT HOREB CHURCH
Organized May 3, 18^5
The Spirit of the Gospel is the Spirit of Missions. And
active piety, when not restrained has ever evidenced itself in missio-nary
effort, and extensive Christian enterprise. And then efforts
have generally prospered, been owned and blessed by the great Head of
the Church in a very remarkable manner.
A Commission issued by order of Fayetteville Presbytery and signed
by the Chairman of the Committee on Domestic Missions, Colon Mclver,
and by order of said Committee forwarded to H.A.Munroe, Missionary for
the year 18^3.
Early the same year the Rev*1 H.A.Munroe entered upon the duties of
his Mission, and preached during the greater part of the first year,
at four stations, two of which were in Columbus and the other two in
Bladen County.
Toward the close of the year, the Missionary made an exploring tn-ur
through all the counties mentioned in his commission but on<=>, Onslow...
At the close of the first year, the Rev^- H.A.Munroe ceased to be the
Missionary of Presbytery and labored, for the most part, at his own
charges, during the years 18UU and 18U 5 • For the people that now com-pass
Mount Horeb Church and Congregation, preaching was conducted at a
Stand in the Open Air, during the greater part of the years I8U3, ^U
and U5. In February I8U5, the following petition was drawn up by the
Rev^ H.A.Munroe and by him in April of the same year presented to Pres-bytery
during its Sessions at St. Pauls in Robeson County, with the
names that are appended, petitioning for the organization of a Church.
"To Fayetteville Presbytery. Dear Brethren,
Near White Hall, and by the road leading from Fayetteville to Wil-mington,
and twelve or thirteen miles below Elizabeth Town, we are,
during the present year, erecting a neat, and sufficiently spacious
building for the worship of God. *The dimensions are thirty by forty
and the pitch fourteen feet. It will cost four hundred dollars. And
it is being built with the view of placing it under the care of Fayet-teville
Presbytery. In this vicinity there are ten or eleven indivi-duals,
who are in connection with neighboring churches, that wish to be
organized with a church with the view of worshiping in our new building
when completed, with such other persons, as God, by His grace, may
di spose .
We are anxious to have a Presbyterian Church organized in our midst
We are persuaded that the doctrines contained in her Standards are
Scriptural and that for her form of Government there is a Divine War-rant.
And as an expression of public sentiment in favor of this opin-ion,
we the members and Congregation unite in petitioning Presbytery
to organize a Church, at the above mentioned place and receive the
same under its care.
This, we the undersigned, humbly pray and petition, February l,l8U5

During the Sessions of Presbytery held at the St. Pauls, in Robeson
County, in April l8*t5, the prayer of the above petition was granted,
and the following Committee, viz: Rev13
- Messers Wm . Brobston, Evander
McNair and H. A. Munroe, and Messers Wm . N. Whitted and John Beatty,
Ruling Elders, were appointed to organize a church as requested.
On May 3, 18^+5 the above Committee met near the Bladen Mineral
Springs at a Stand in the open air and held a protracted meeting. Had
preaching twice a day Saturday and Sabbath. The Congregations were
large for the low country, and attention to the preached Gospel was
good. On Saturday, May 3, 18^5, after the first sermon, the above
mentioned Committee of Presbytery met. Brother Brobston was called to
the Chair and the Committee constituted with prayer.
Present Messers Wm . Brobston, Evander McNair and H. A. Munroe,
Ministers, and Mr. Wm . N. Whitted, a Ruling Elder.
The following persons made application to be organized into a
Church , Vi z

After having had some conversation with the applicants on the
subject of personal piety and their views for seeking connection with
and being organized into a Church
Sabbath Morning, May Uth, 18^5.
Messrs. Wm . S. Andres and James Cromartie were nominated by the
Congregation to hold the offices of Ruling Elders and Deacons in the
Church about to be organized. These offices were united in the same
persons there being no other suitable male members in the congregation.
The names of the applicants were then called and in the presence of a
numerous audience A Church was formally organized.
In the summer of 18U 5 the Building Committee composed of Messrs.
James Cromartie, Neill McDugald and Ronald McMillan, made a contract
with Mr. George Cromartie to erect a house for worship West of White
Hall and near the road leading from Fayetteville to Wilmington on a
tract of land obtained of Shadrack Wooten, Sr. for the use of the
Presbyterian Church at that place
On December 6th, l8^5> we, for the first time, met to worship in
our new Church, Mount Horeb.

PREFACE
Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church since its organization
in I8U5 has been a beacon light in the community where it is
located. It is approximately 10 miles south east of Eliza-bethtown,
the county seat of Bladen County, on N. C. Highway 87
Near by on the Cape Fear River is White Hall Landing.
At one time there was a thriving settlement with stores, mills
and other establishments at White Hall. Here produce was
shipped to Wilmington, Fayetteville and other points. Passen-gers
traveling on the river went aboard p.r\r\ f\ i sembarke^ hero.
In February 1858 the steamboard "Magnolia" blew up at the
White Hall landing, killing the Captain and a great many of
the passengers. With better modes of transportation emerging,
traffic on the river became less and less and White Hall
eventually became known just as a landing site on the river.
Almost every burying ground has a stranger buried in it,
and Mount Horeb is no exception. There is a stranger who
lies sleeping in the Church yard. His grave is enclosed
within a beautiful iron fence beneath a cedar tree.
JOHN HENRY WEHMANN
WAS BORN AT LESUM KINGDOM OF HANOVER, GERMANY,
on the 8th of December, 1821 , died November 26,
I8U9, Aged 27 yrs . , 11 months & 18 days.
"By strangers hands his dying eyes were closed.
Peace to his ashes. Like a flower he passed away,
destroyed in all his bloom. He left this world
& all his friends to moulder in the Lamb."
Excerpts from the original sessional records of the
Church are included in this booklet, together with the
inscriptions from the grave stones.
