A HISTORICAL SKETCH OF
HEBRON BAPTIST CHURCH
GASTON COUNTY, N.C.
QmUtb
Ralsigh, N.C.
Published by: Authority of the Church:
| HEBRON BAPTIST CHURCH was organized at Abemethy's Ferry (now Rozzell's
on the Catawba River in Lincoln County (now Gaston), N.C. in the latter part
of the Eighteenth Century. The log house in which these people worshipped first
stood on the river bank inmediately at the Ferry. No records of this church
are known to exist earlier than 1843 but tradition and references in old land
deeds, carries us back to 1792. An old negro woman now living and nearly 102
years old whose name appears on the old church roll as Sally, servant of Mr.
Henderson says her husband Jake who belonged to Richard Rozzelle, told her he
was at the "raising" of the old Church and at James Abemethy "took up" one corner.
This James Abemethy is known to have been drowned shortly afterwards, probably
in the summer of 1792.
I The tract of land upon which the Church stood was conveyed to Nathan A.
Abemethy by James Abemethy and his wife Elizabeth on the 28th day of March
1792. Nathan Abemethy sold to Nathaniel Saddler on the 20th day of August 1803
and in Book # 27, Page 625, in the Register's Office, Lincoln County, N.C, we
find the following deed.
I "This indenture made this the 4th day of May, A.D., 1816 between Nathaniel
Saddler, of Lincoln County, N.C. , of the first part and Richard Rozzelle of said
county and state of the other part. Witnesseth: That the said N. Saddler for
and consideration of the sum of fifty dollars to him in hand paid the receipt
whereof it hereby acknowledged, hath given, granted, bargained and sold, and
by these present doth give, grant, bargain, sell, alien and confirm, unto the
said Richard Rozzelle a parcel of land lying and being in state and county aforesaid
joining the Catawba River immediately at said Rozzelle 's Ferry, and bounded as
follows: Beginning at a walnut and sassafras on the river bank thence N. 20 W.
5 poles to a stake thence N. South E. 24 poles to an ash, thence S. 20 E. 5 poles
to a stake on the river bank, thence down the river to the beginning. Containing
4 acres, together with the appartenances thereunto belonging to the said Richard
Rozzelle, his heirs and assigns forever, with the following exceptions to wit:
that is to say it is to be understood that the said Richard Rozzelle, his heirs
and assigns are hereby debarred from building or erecting any house, or placing
any family to live or reside on said land, or premises interrupt, molest the
meeting house or people meeting, and the said Nathaniel Saddler doth for himself,
his heirs, executors administrators covenant and grant to said Richard Rozzelle
which land the said Saddler will warrant and defend against all persons, whatsoever
exclusive of the above exceptions.
| In witness whereof the said Nathaniel Saddler has hereunto set his hand
and seal this day and year above written.
| Signed and seal presented in the presence of Nathaniel Saddler. SEAL

According to the terms of a swap of land made in 1832, John Rozzelle,
a son of Richard Rozzelle was to give the church a deed on fee simple for one
acre of land nearly one half mile from Ferry, the consideration was to be the
right of the church on the River bank.
The old house was removed and stood on the new site, until it was crushed
by the weight of the snow on its roof in 1832. The membership being too weak
to rebuild a stand was erected in the grove, at which preaching was continued
at intervals of indefinite periods of time until 1852. The organization having
been dissolved sometime in 1853. Other denominations were allowed the use of
the stand, notable, the Lutheran, Presbyterians and Methodist the latter organized
a society at this place, have erected a house of worship and now hold possession
of the site. On the 7th day of February, 1883 before the Methodist began to
build. Brother John C. Fite addressed a letter to A.C. Rozzelle then in
possession, in which he used the following language:
"I do want you to relinquish your claim or whatever of claim you may think
you have, to Old Hebron Church tract. We expect to reorganize the church and
we are unwilling to surrender the site for which we have a deed from John Rozzelle
dated in 1832. Ibis deed has never been recorded, , etc. , etc. ""A.C. Rozzelle
disregarded this letter, and in July 1883 conveyed the same land to the Methodist
Church.
It was understood at this time that Eli Abemethy had in his possession
the Church deed, from John Rozzelle; Brother John C. Fite was sent to him for
the deed, he told Bro. Fite that the deed was in the law office of Geo. F. Bason
Esq., of Dallas, N.C. Bro. Fite then went to Mr. Bason who told him the deed
had been taken out of his office upon an order from Eli Abemethy. The giving
of this order by Abemethy, is denied, and so the matter remains a mystery.
The following named preachers are known to have served this Church:
John Ruker, at intervals from 1800 to 1819; Samuel McRary and Hosea Holcomb
during a part of the same time; but we have no means of knowing when either
of their ministrations began or ended. After them William Richards served the
church until 1829; then B.T. Kirby for a short time, and from 1834 to 1839,
P.K. Pursley was their preacher; afterwards, H.VJ. Carroll until 1846; Wade
Hill, _ Garrison and R..B. Jones preached occasionally during the next ten years.
Alexander Abemethy and A.J. Cansler were the preachers who dissolved the old
organization in 1853.
After the war Elder G.J. Wilkie preached once at the old site and in 1883
Elder John F. Morris, who was laboring under the supervision of the Missionary
Board of the South Fork Association, preached a few times.
Through the influence of Elder Morris the members of the different Baptist
Churches, who resided between Dutchman Creek and the Catawba River, in Gaston
County, N.C. , held a conference meeting at the Flat Rock School House near Mountain
Island Mills, on the 8th day of June, 1883, for the purpose of consulting about
the propriety of reorganizing old "Hebron Church". Bro. John L. Grice was chosen
moderator, and Bro. J. Grice was requested to act as secretary; when the following
preamble and resolutions were adopted; whereas the site of Old Hebron Church
has been taken into possession by A.C. Rozzelle, and the Deed for the same
mysteriously obtained from the Office of George F. Bason, Esq., of Dallas, and
whereas there can be no doubt as to the legality of our title, and being unwilling
to surrender the same; therefore Resolved 1st, that we reorganize Old Hebron
Church, and that we meet for that purpose, at the school house on the old site,
on the 6th day of July, 1883. Afterwards the time of reorganization was postponed
until the 5th" day of October, 1883, when Elders John F. Morris and T.W. Upton
and Deacons John B. Stone, John M. Hollobough and J.R. Underwood met at the
old site at 10 o'clock, a.m. Brothers John L. Grice, J.M. Bumgamer and John
C. Fite were also present. Mrs. William F. Cannon had requested, Elder J.F.
Morris to secure her letter of dismission from Salem Church, for the purpose
of joining this organization. This he did, and she not being present, he gave
the letter to her husband, who appeared to receive it very kindly, saying the
day was to rainy for Mrs. Cannon to attend. Our intention was to occupy the
school house at this place, but this previledge was denied us by W.F. Cannon
who said he had locked us out, because he's not willing that we should reorganize
the church at this place after consulate we agreed to meet in the afternoon
of this same day, at the Flat Rock School House near Mountain Island Mills.
This we did and the reorganization took place by choosing Deacon John B. Stone
Chairman and John M. Hollobough, Secretary. The letter of the following persons
were presented and their names added as members. Deacon J.R. Underwocd and
wife Mary Underwocd, Brothers John L. Grice, J.M. Bumgamer and John C. Fite.
At conference the same evening several other names of newly baptized persons
were enrolled and Brother John L. Grice was elected Church Clerk. The above
Historical Sketch was adopted as a part of the church records, by the church
in conference on the 16th day of September, 1886.
John L. Grice, Church Clerk.
"This Historical Sketch," has been published to inform the public of the
trials and persecutions to which, "Hebron Baptist Church" has been subjected
and also to ask all persons to assist this weak and struggling congregation
to erect, for themselves a house of worship upon their recently purchased site.

THE HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN ISLAND.
By: DAVE KELLEY.
(As related to me by my mother, Jane Phifer KELLEY')
1. Thomas Randolph TATE of Greensboro, started to build the mill in 1846,
brought the water power and land from a Mr. FARRAR.
Mr. Thomas FIELDS of Greensboro, was associated with Mr. TATE as Superint-endent
of construction and operated the mill. Mr. TATE came in possession
of the old Mount Heckler Mill and machinery partly through marriage to Miss
Nancy HUMPHREY', whose father, Henry HUMPHREY, elected and operated the Mount
Heckler Mill at Greensboro.
The name Mountain Island was derived from Mount Heckler Mill and the little
mountain that is now almost covered by water.
The children of Mr. TATE and Miss Nancy HUMPHREY TATE: Boys: Henry, John,
Abb, Turner, Thomas, Jr., Ferdenan, George, Charley, Ernest; Girls: Victory,
married M.P. PEGRAM of Charlotte; Katie, married Charley VANCE of Asheville.
Mr. TATE's second wife was Miss Cornelia OVERMAN. She had two children:
Caswell and Anna.
When the mill building was completed the machinery was hauled from Greensboro
to Mountain Island, arri was started in the fall of 1849 when my mother was 12
years of age.
Some of the families that worked there at the beginning were: WINGATES,
HINKLES, INGLES, PHIFERS, KELLEYS, HOWARDS, CASHIONS, McKELVEYS, BRINKLEYS,
PRICES, SHIELDS, PRATHERS, DUCKS, CARIGANS, COVINGTONS, GRAYS, NORMANS and
FARRINGTONS, etc.
The mill was run from sun up to sun down the year round by Mr. Thomas TATE.
The men's wages were twenty five to forty cents per day. The women received
from twenty five to forty cents per day for weaving. The small boys and girls
received from five to twenty five cents per day.
40
There was no limit to age, it took all to work from the cradle to the grave
to get a bare existence. There were no free schools or anyone able to send
their children to college, except the wealthy and there were very few of them.
The goods manufactured was heavy sheeting, drilling, and yarn No. 8, 10,
and 12 put up in 5 pound bunches. They were wrapped in blue paper and sold
mostly over North Carolina and Tennessee. The sheeting was dyed with coperas
or maple bark or shoe make berries and was used in the colors for the women's
dresses, in the plain for under clothing. The men wore the plain for shirts
and under clothing and the drilling dyed with coperas for work pants, and a
heavy geans for coats or vests. They wore shawls instead of overcoats.
There was very little money in circulation then and the most of trade was
barter trade. The heads of the families were called in the office the fifteenth
of the month and told how much farther they were in debt to the company.
The living conditions here were as good as anywhere and better than the
farms. Every family that could get work at mills left the farm.
Mr. TATE had a wool department in which he wove blankets and Southern Gray
for the Confederate Soldiers in time of the Civil War.
Up to this time there were no public works in this community, except the
Iron mines in Lincoln County. Silver or tin mines were found at Kings Mountain.
There were some gold mines in Mecklenburg, Union and Stanley counties. Gold
was taken from these mines and was refined and minted into coins, in the old
Mint Building that stood where the present Post Office now stands in Charlotte.
All of the Industrial plants stopped at the surrender of Robert E. LEE,
General of the Confederate States. Mountain Island closed down at this time,
April 5, 1865, arri remained closed until 1872. In 1872 the Tate boys threw
out the old Mount Heckler machinery except four old cap frames and four drawing
frames.
They hired James McDONALD from Concord, N.C., for whom I was working at
that time, to erect and start the new machinery. In the summer of 1874, the
Concord mill stopped when cotton advanced to twenty seven cents a pound. Mother,
Aunt Mary and I went back to Mountain Island and worked from the 7th of July
until the 7th of September. Mother and Aunt Mary worked for 60 cents per day
weaving and I worked for 25 cents per day. After we had worked here for two
months we went back to Concord.
The 4th of March, 1875, our family moved back to Mountain Island. I began
work at this time, the 6th of March, 1875, my thirteenth birthday.
The TATE boys put in 50 check looms and changed over twenty five
