IN MEMORIAM.
The committee appointed to prepare a minute on the death of John McDonald, late a ruling
elder in Big Rockfish church, report:
Mr. McDonald was horn on the 10th of March 1796, in the Isle of Skye, on the northern
coast of Scotland. In the year 18(12, his parents emigrated to this country, landing at Wilmington and
settled in Moore County. When about 16 years of age, Mr. McDonald was apprenticed to a Mr.
McQueen, to learn the trade of a carpenter, with whom he served fixe years, and soon thereafter
came to Fayettcvillc to live. Here, while still a young man he gave his heart to God in Christ, and
became a member of the Presbyterian church in Fayettex ille, then under the pastoral care of the Rev.
J. G. Hammer, D. D.
The intelligent, growing piety of Mr. McDonald soon attracted the attention of the members
of the church, and he was made a ruling elder. Subsequently he removed to the country and when
the church of Big Rockfish w as formed he was elected a ruling elder in that organization. Here he
continued to serve the church, as a faithful and devoted officer, until his death, on Saturday evening,
May 15, 1869.
The christian character of Mr. McDonald was of a very high order, such as to command the
respect and confidence of all who knew him, to an extent seldom equalled. His ancestors, from time
immemorial, had been of the stern old Presbyterian stock of Scotland, and his attachment to the faith
of his fathers was intelligent and sincere. He received and held firmly the great doctrines of grace,
and lahored faithfully in their practical application to himself, and others. No man labored more
dilligently than he in the work that the Lord afsigned him; and, at the same time, no man ever,
perhaps, trusted God more implicitly to work in and to work for him. He took great interest in the
Sabbath School, of which he was superintendent up to the time of his death, and in the youth of the
congregation generally; and his influence over them for good cannot he known until the records of
eternity shall he made up. Mr. McDonald was emphatically a good man. "full of the Holy Ghost and
wisdom". And he died as he had lived, meekly resting in Jesus for salvation. His illness was
protracted through several weeks of severe suffering, which he bore with the resignation of a true
child of God, ripe for heaven.
In view of these facts we submit the follow ing resolutions:
1. Resolved, That we heartily sympathize with the widow and children of our deceased
brother, and exprefs to them, in behalf of the congregation, the great lofs we have all sustained in this
bereavement. But we sorrow not without hope. He served his generation faithfully, and has gone to
his reward. And his works do follow him. The labors of his life, devoted to God, shall linger with us
many days, and bear fruit abundantly unto eternal life. And our separation from him will not be
long, if we be faithful to the counsels he has given us, both in his walk and conversation.
2. Resolved, That this minute be entered upon our sefsion book, a copy of it be furnished to
the family of the deceased, and that it he also published in the "North Carolina Presbyterian."

Oct 1877 the following minute was adopted:
13
Whereas it has been the will of the great Head of the Church to call away from among us
William James Smith, for many years a Deacon of our church
Resolved I that while bowing humbly to the will of God, we hereby record a sense of the loss
which our church has sustained by the removal of an earnest and faithful fellow-laborer. So justly
beloved for his kindliness, his self sacrificing zeal for the Church, and his humble and unassuming
piety.
2 that we hereby tender to his widow our sympathy under her severe bereavement in losing
a husband so tender and loving and pray that she may be abundantly sustained by Him who said "I
will never leave you".
3 that as a tribute to his memory and a token of our respect and affections that his minute
be inscribed on our records, a copy furnished to the widow and a copy furnished for publication in

the Elders. We have two Sabbath Schools within the congregation.
The Sacraments arc neglected by none of the members of the church as far as we know.
Church Harmony & Growth
There is no discord that specially demands the action of the Session. We hope that we are
growing in spiritual knowledge and attainments.
We contribute by collection in connection with public worship.
For the past year our contributions have been very small - having preaching only part of the
year and bad weather several days on which we had preaching. Our contributions are unusually
small.

McDonald and J. A. McFadyen. The meeting was opened with prayer.
The following tribute to the memory of Elder Neill McDonald was adopted. Closed with
prayer.
At his late residence in Cumberland County N. C. the 8th of May 1888 died Elder Neill
McDonald in the 50 year of his age and 20th year of his Eldership having been ordained to the
Eldership of Bi« Rockfish Church in 1868.
Bro. McDonald was a son of Elder John McDonald of pleasant memory and Bro. of Rev. K.
McDonald of Wilmington Presbytery N.C. and Rev. A. McDonald of Paduc Presbytery K.Y.
In the year 1872 he was happily married to Miss Man B. McFadyen sister of Rev. A.
McFadyen of Wilmington N.C. who with one little daughter Mary Sherwood and many friends are
left to mourn his death.
Bro. McDonald was a good man; humble and unobtrusive in his disposition. He loved the
cause of the Master and always rejoiced in the prosperity of Zion.
Being a very delicate man, he was never able to do for the Master that which required
physical strength and endurance but his voice and vote were ewer ready and promptly given for
liberty, for Sabbath observance, for all moral reform, for all that tends to the <;ood of man and for
the "lory of God.
He was especially fond of the Sabbath Schoolwork. He was for a number of years
Superintendent of Sabbath School at Bij; Rockfish Church, and was always in his place when his
health would permit.
His labors and suffering are ended, and the reward of a faithful humble life, spent in the
sen ices of Christ and as we believe are now His.
We yield his mortal body to the grave to await the call of Him who is the "resurrection and
the life". But we, as the Session would preserve the memory of our Brother and co-laborer in the
cause of Christ, not only for the comfort of relatives and friends, but also for the encouragement of
ourselves and the members of the Church who need the example and influence of those who have
been sound in doctrine, firm in faith, prompt in duty and devoted to the senice of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Therefore Resolved. That in the death of Bro. Neill McDonald we recognize the chastening
hand of God and his voice calling unto us. Be more faithful to the will of Him "who doeth all things
well" we bow with assignation.
Resolved that a page of our Session Book be inscribed to the memory of Elder Neill
McDonald and that we emulate his virtues and cherish his memory.
Resolved that we extend to his bereaved family sympathy in this hour of their affliction and
pray that God who has pledged himself to he a father tit the fatherless and a protector to the w idow
may be to them in the fullness of His promise.
Resolved that a copy of this tribute to his memory be sent to his family, to the N. C.
Presbyterian for publication and spread upon the minutes of the Session.

Narrative on State of Religion
We have preaching In a Stated Supply regularh one Sabbath a month, and preaching is wel
received. The Sabbath is well observed by our congregation. The attendance upon Worship is good.
The flock is increasing in knowledge and piety. The church is in a state of perfect harmony. While
we have had accessions to our members, we have suffered a loss during the year In reason of the
transfer of about thirty to organize a new church at Hope Mills. Our church has increased its
contributions during the year notwithstanding the hard times and the removal of so many members
to another organization.
We have contributed to all the objects ordered by the highest courts of the Chinch. We
make collections by basket collections and bj Society organizations. Our Supply explains the object
to be contributed to beforehand.

Narrative
n
The Word is preached statedly by our Stated Supply Rev. P. R. Law once a month in the
Church on Sabbath forenoons and at some point on the outskirts of the flock in the afternoons.
The congregations, both at the preaching sessions in the church & at the outposts have been
steadily gaining in size. The Gospel is heard attentively at every sen ice. The observance of the
Sabbath has not suffered any retrogression so far as we can see & yet the day not spent intirely in
public and private worship and rest as required by God by many. It is not easy to point out any
material advance in keeping the day holy with the Lord. The most potent acts of sin regard the
Sancty of the day is seen in social visiting and communication on Secular topics.
The harmony of the church is perfect so far as we know. There has been some cases of
discipline but they have been disposed of so far as we are able to see satisfactory.
The growth of the church in members added has been encouraging. There have been more
additions to the church on professions of faith than during any year in the past twenty. There has
been too a marked increase in the likenability to contributions to the Lords Treasury. We have two
Sabbath Schools within the bounds of the (lock, both of the them under the comfort of the Officers of
the Church. There is also a union school in a corner of the flock in w hich some of our flock are
coworkers. All of these schools arc in a prosperous condition and doing fine work. A Sabbath
afternoon prayer meeting is also held within our bounds and circulated from house to house to house.
Our church contributes to all the objects ordered hy the higher courts of the church. Our plan of
collections is partly by the old Basket method and partly by private solicitations by the Deacons and
partly through Society which collects by the monthly dues system.
Our church has suffered of late as in the more remote past by removal. Its membership has
been decreased by the transfer of about thirty to Hope Mills Church at its organization and yet
notwithstanding the stringaway of money matters, we feel there has been a marked progress all along
the lines and feel thankful to God. Closed with prayer.

We have stated administration of the Word by a State Supply once a month. There are no
arrears to present or past pastors. The Sabbath is not observed as the S. S. requires, yet there are no
outbreaking desecration's of the day. There is too much social visiting and talk on secular subjects.
Public and private catachitical instructions are in practice. The church is growing in knowledge and
spirituality, but we have had no persons within the flock out of the church. We contribute to all the
objects required by the Presbytery. The attendance upon the public worship of the Sanctuary is very
good. We have the Sabbath Schools within the bounds of the church under the control of its officers.

Narrative
We have had preaching one Sabbath a month during the year by Rev. P. R. Law. The
Sabbath is not observed as it should be but there has been no backward movement - instead rather
an advance toward a proper observance of the day. The notable ways the law is violated is in
conversation on secular subjects, social visiting & inactivity concerning the duties of the day.
Worship in the public sanctuary is decent in appearance & the congregation good and growing.
Family worship is not observed in a considerable number of our families. We think our flock is
growing in spirituality & intelligence. The church enjoys now and has done so during the year
perfect harmony. We contribute to all the objects ordered by the courts of the Church over us. The
assessments - for the Presbyterial funds - has not been forwarded but it will be after the 2nd Sunday
in May. The church as no arrearages.

Narrative
The attendance upon the sen ices of the Sanctuary is good - indeed marked by increased
congregations of late. Family worship not observed by all - much neglected - no change since last
year. The Sabbath is a holiday & not a holy day to some, but is as a whole, well observed by our
people. Slight improvement, we think, since last report. We contribute to all the objects ordered by
the higher church courts.
The Pastor's salary fully paid.
There has been no special evidence of spiritual growth - save increased attendance upon the
preaching of the word, & increase of contributions in the Sabbath School. Worldly conformity
prevails to some extent
