Greetings to our partners in education! We hope
this newsletter finds your semester going well. We are
pleased to be able to reinstate our newsletter for the
Latham Clinical Schools Network with its revamped
format and new name, Flagship: News for the Pirate
Education Nation. As the founding college of East
Carolina University, the College of Education strives
to be a flagship institution and a beacon in the east
and beyond. We are committed to preparing quality
candidates with real world, field-embedded experiences,
and we cannot do this without you. We have several
key initiatives underway that have the potential to
change the way we prepare future educators. In future
newsletters, we will share these initiatives as we pilot,
research, and seek to implement the best results of
our findings. This newsletter is for you to share your
innovative work with us as well. Do not hesitate to
contact us to highlight the great work happening in the
Latham Clinical Schools Network. Thank you for all
that you have done in partnership with the College of

Maynard Scholars & Teaching Fellows
The Maynard Scholarship is a four-year $20,000
scholarship awarded to ten outstanding high school
seniors each year. This scholarship is modeled after the
NC Teaching Fellow Scholarship and as such, recipients
will be expected to teach in a
public, charter, or government
school for four years in one
of the fifty counties in eastern
North Carolina following
graduation. Recipients have
up to seven years to complete
this requirement. In order to
be eligible to apply, applicants
must meet the following
criteria:
• Must reside in one of the
fifty counties in eastern NC
• A minimum score of
1,000 on the SAT
• Unweighted GPA of 3.0
or better
• Must intend to teach
K-12 after graduation
• Must complete an application and interview
The Teaching Fellows and Maynard Scholars office
received a record number of applications this year
and held interviews on Saturday March 2, 2013. The
ten recipients were notified by the end of March.
Maynard Scholarship recipients have programmatic
responsibilities that are designed to make each recipient
a better citizen and teacher. Community outreach is a
critical component of the Maynard Scholars program
and scholars provide free tutoring services for various
non-profit organizations as well as in classrooms
in schools throughout Pitt County. Our Maynard
Scholars live together during their freshmen year and
complete a special section of COAD 1000 as a group.
These experiences and the support provided through
the program help our scholars become successful future
educators.
The Teaching Fellows and Maynard Scholars office,
in cooperation with the Office of Teacher Education
and the College of Education
are very excited to announce
the formation of an Education
Housing Community for the
2013-2014 school year. The
College of Education Housing
Community (EHC) gives first-year
education students a unique
residential learning experience
designed to connect College
of Education faculty, staff
members and classroom learning
with residence life. This eases
the transition into the ECU
community and contributes
to their success within the
College of Education and
beyond. Students will enjoy the
typical freshman experience of
dorm life with the added benefit of living with other
students who are also going into the education field.
The Maynard Scholars will be housed with the EHC
and the EHC members will have some of the same
programmatic opportunities as the Maynard Scholars.
The EHC will be housed in Umstead Residence
hall for the 2013-2014 school year. There are no
additional costs associated with the EHC beyond the
standard room and board rates. Applications for the
EHC were due by Wednesday May, 1, 2013 and the
application can be accessed online at: http://www.ecu.
edu/educ/ehc. Questions and completed applications
should be emailed to Dionna Manning, manningd@
ecu.edu. We are very excited about what the 2013-
2014 school year has in store for us!

On February 1, 2013, 38 East Carolina University freshmen with an intended Teacher Education major were honored during the College of Education ECU EXCELS event. This event was a part of the annual ECU EXCELS program that recognizes students who are first time, full-time freshmen or on-campus transfers who earned a 3.0 GPA or higher during the fall semester.
There were a total of 98 people in attendance which included both honored students and their guests. Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, brought words of recognition to the award recipients and Ms. Taylor Waters, an ECU Teaching Fellow and recent recipient of the TeenNick HALO Award, served as the keynote speaker. Students were individually recognized and received a Certificate of Academic Achievement, had an opportunity to interact with College of Education faculty, and were served light refreshments at the event.

Teaching Fellows:
Summer Enrichment
July 8-12, 2013: The ECU College of Education will be hosting five North Carolina Teaching Fellows from institutions around the state for their required Junior Enrichment Activity. The Office of Professional Development and Student Outreach is partnering with Ms. Tammy Lee, Teaching Instructor in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Instructional Technology Education to provide this opportunity for these students.
Ms. Lee has partnered with several local school systems, working with their teachers on science curriculum development throughout the school year. During the summer, she hosts a week-long Summer Science Camp for students in grades 3-5 to implement planned lessons and evaluate their effectiveness. Teaching Fellows will spend a great deal of time learning about curriculum development, evaluation and lesson planning as they progress through the week.
The following institutions will be represented:
• East Carolina University
• UNC Wilmington
• Campbell University
• UNC-Greensboro
• Western Carolina University
Clinical Teacher Training
Clinical Teachers play a vital role in helping ECU produce passionate and competent educators. Individuals who wish to become a clinical teacher and host an intern in their classroom must complete Clinical Teacher Training offered by the Office of Teacher Education. To attend training, teachers must hold a current SP II license and receive the recommendation of his/her principal to participate in the training. They must also possess the appropriate skills, knowledge and disposition to step into this coaching role.
Clinical Teacher Training is a one-day training session that includes an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the clinical teacher, intern, and university supervisor. These training sessions are offered over the summer on five separate days. This summer we are offering the training in five separate counties that are part of the Latham Clinical Schools Network. We are very excited to be able to distribute the training among five different partners!
The dates and locations for training are as follows:
Craven County Board Room – Tuesday, June 25th
Wilson County – Darden Alumni Center – Thursday, June 27th
Lenoir County Central Office – Tuesday July 9th
Nash County Teacher Resource Center – Thursday, July 11th
Pitt County – Willis Building – Tuesday, August 13th
Any teacher who is interested in attending the upcoming training should talk to their principal who will register teachers via their school system’s Latham Clinical Schools Network liaison. If you have questions regarding Clinical Teacher Training, please contact Karen Singer at singerk@ecu.edu.
