REPORT OF D. H. HILL, A. M.
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH.
Raleigh, N. ('., December 20, 1892.
President Alexander Q. Holladay.
Sir — I have the honor to submit the following report of
the English Department for the collegiate year of 1801-92,
and the first term of the collegiate year lS92-'93.
In this time two hundred and nineteen (219) students have
taken the English Course. These were distributed as follows
:
i Juniors 21
In 1 891-92 there were - Sophomores 33
f Freshmen 58 — 112
["Seniors 19
In 1892-'93 (so far) there have been
-j g^L^'".
I - 81
I Freshmen 43 — 107
Total -. - 219
Each of these classes, except the Freshman, meets three
times a week for the whole year; the Freshman Class has
had four recitations a week, and, until this year, has recited by
sections. The classes have all followed the course of studies
approved by the Faculty and given in full in the Catalogue.
Believing that the only way to master any tongue is to
write constantly in that tongue, I have required exercises,
compositions, essays and criticisms from all the classes, and
the time I have to spend in correcting these is almost equal
to the time spent in my lecture-room.
Last year, through an appropriation by the Board of Trus-tees,
I was enabled to put in my room a small reference
library. This has greatly helped my work, but we still need
other books, and I respectfully ask that fifty dollars be appro-priated
for this purpose.
Respectfully submitted, D. II. HILL,
Professor of English.
