John L. Floyd Papers |
Description |
John Leonidas Floyd, father of Fred Floyd, was born January, 1857, apparently in South Carolina and Has married to Mary Callie Cooper, born June, 1866, on August 7, 1877, in Jackson County. Floyd was the son of Rufus and Angeline Mingus Floyd and resided in that part of Swain County that was originally in Haywood and later in Jackson County. Floyd died February 6, 1915. He was survived by his widow, who died February 17, 1921. Mrs. Floyd appears in the papers as M. C. Floyd. J. L. Floyd was the nephew of Abraham Mingus, born March, 1824, the son of Dr. John Mingus and his wife Mary. Mingus did not marry but in the later years or his life he lived with John and Callie Floyd as a boarder. Mingus died late in 1903. His will provided that the bodies of his mother and father would be taken up and reinterred in the cemetery of Mingus Creek Methodist Church; they are, however, buried in the Floyd Family' cemetery in Swain County. Mingus also willed to J. L. Floyd all of his home lands consisting of his part or the John Mingus lands as set forth in a deed from R. G. Floyd and Sarah Floyd. J. L. Floyd was named executor of his estate. Hamilton G. Mingus was a younger brother of Abraham. Hamilton, some of whose letters appear in the papers, enlisted in the Confederate Army April 27, 1861. He was hospitalized in Petersburg, Virginia, and died of "febris remittens" on January 11, 1862. |
