MR. OLLIN i a lawJer. He was born in St. Loui , Mo.,
in 1876, and secured hi early education in the primary and high
chool and a bu inc college in his native city, afterward
entering th' Law chool of Howard University, Washington,
D. ., where he was graduated with
honor in the cla's of 1901 with the
degree of Bachelor of Law .
After graduation Mr. Collins decided
to remain in Washington, where
he was admitted to practice in October,
1901, on examination by the Supreme
Court of the District of Columbia.
He immediately opened offices and has
ince built up a large and lucrative
practice, being constantly engaged
before the nited State courts and
the various governmental departments.

Lodge 1365, G. O. of O. F.; of the Anti-Tuberculosis
Society of the Di trict of Columbia; corre ponding ecretary
of the Tegro Busine League; ecretaryand trea urer of the
Busine League Herald Publi hing Company; ecretary and
manager of the Columbia Benefit As ociation; financial secretary
of the Law chool Alumni of Howard University; secretary
of th National Tegro Bar A ociation, and secretary of
the National egro Pre As ociation. In the council of the
National Tcgro Bu. in League he i active and influential.
Th Republican ational COJIlJDittee selected him as one of
the supervisor of the election for delegates from the District
of olumbia to the ational Convention at Chicago, June, 1908.
He is the only member of hi race ever honored with the position
of comrni. ioner of deeds in thi country, which po ition he
holds for th 'tate of J w Jer ey.
Mr. Collin i a hilTWy re pected member of the bar, and has
earned a fine reputation in the civil branche of the law. He
combine legal knowledge and experience with the true business
in tinct and an immen e apacity for work. He was married,
on Chri tma Day, 1907, to Mi Bertha Grace Howard, a
daughter of Rev. William J. Howard, D.D., pastor of Zion
Bapti t Church of Washin!!ton, D. C.

MR. KNox has been, since 1897, proprietor and editor of
The Freeman, an illustrated paper of large circulation and influence.
He was born a slave on a plantation in Wilson County,
Tenne see, September 16, 1841.
During the Civil War his master
espoused the cause of the Confederacy,
and, as a matter of safe keeping, thought
it better that "his man" accompany
him to the front, and he found himself •
a part of the army of the South.
George later escaped to the Union
Army, where he was welcomed and
employed as a teamster. At the close
of his ervice he made his way orth,
and, after many trials, succeeded in
r~aching Greenfield, Ind., where he
e tablished himself in the barber busi-
George L. Knox ness, made a success, accumulated
some property, and became prominent in the affairs of the community.
At the age of twenty- ix he began his first lessons,
reciting to a tutor that he employed for that purpose. The
strides he has made con idering the time he began in his life
work have been commented on favorably by those who know
him. In 1884 he moved to Indianapolis and opened a barber
shop, later establishing the famous "Bates House Shop,"
costing $10,000. He now, in addition to his newspaper business,
conducts two barber shops considered among the best in the
state. Twenty-six persons find employment in these two business
places.
Mr. Knox is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
He has served as a lay delegate on two occasions to the General
Conference. At the Indianapolis International Convention of
the Epworth Leagues. in 1899, he was a member of the Committee
of Arrangements. He has served as delegate-at-Iarge to the
Republican I ational Convention, being the only Negro north of
Mason and Dixon's line being thus accepted. He recently made
an unsuccessful race for Congress. Mr. Knox has large property
intere t in Indianapolis. He is a member of the ational
.r egro Bu iness League, and one of the Executive Committee of
the ational egro Press Association.
