DR. MOORLAND is a secretary of the International Committee
of the Young Men' Christian Association of the Colored Men's
Department.
He was born at Coldwater, Ohio, September 10, 1863. Hi
parents migrated to Ohio from Newbern,
N. C., where his forebears had
lived as freemen for nearly two centuries.
A great-grandfather was a
noted Baptist preacher, a grandfather
was a school teacher, and an uncle was
a successful physician before 1850.
Jesse Edward was raised on a farm
and received part of his education in
the count\' school and in orthwestern
•
~ormal University. After teaching
chool a few years he entered Howard
University. Washington, D. C., and
Rev. ]. E. Moorland, D.D. was graduated from the theological
department as salutatorian of his class. He entered the
ministry and did mis ionary work in North Carolina and Virginia,
organizing a church at South Boston, Va., which is in II
prosperous condition to-day.
In 1891 1\1r. 1\foorland was called to the general secretaryship
oUhe colorecl Young Men's Chri.tian Association at Washington,
D. C., where he did sucqessful work. He again entered the
pastorate, first at I ashville, Tenn., and afterward served in
Cleveland, Ohio, and in both cities his work was marked with
exceptional succe s. He was called to the secretaryship of the
International Committee in 1898 and has specialized on city
ssociation work among colored men and boys.
Howard Univer ity conferred the degree of Doctor of Divinity
upon fr. Moorland in 1906, and in the following year elected
him a one of it tru tee. He is al 0 a trustee of the Frederick
Dougla Hom Association, a member of the American Jegro
Academy, and of the Congregational Church. He married
Mi Lucv Corbin Woodson who is a oTaduate of Howard Uni- .l 'b
versity and a descendant of a family of pioneer preachers and
teacher.
In his work he touches the lives of hundreds of young men,
and in pires them with hiO'h purpose for character and service.

188] to 1886. He then began the grocery business at the place
whrre he may be found to-day. Mr. Cater ha been twice
married; in ]884. to )1i s Mary O. Tate, a graduate of

dren; in 1908, to 1\1r. lara )1ax\Vell, widow of the late L. B.
)1ax\Vell, who wa lhe first colored field worker of the International
