in 1864 by the Indiana 0 'iety of Friend. Th valua-tion
of the prol rty i 50,000. Th annual xpel1 e
are $10,000. There wer 132 male and 1 0 f mal student in
1908, between six and thirty year of age, average about fifteen
years, and 3 male and 6 female teacher, 5 of whom were
white and 4 colored. The expen (' are met by intere t on
$35,000. endo"wll1cnt and donations.
The college is located on a farm of over three hundred acre,
which lies to the northwe t of Helena about nine mile.
Be ide four large builrungs, there is. on the campus, a dwelling
for laborers, a large laundry, kitchen, commis. ar~·. wood houses,
a general tore, power hou e, blacksmith hop, a large barn and
cribs, and all other nece ar)' out-houses. •
Students have acce to a library in the collel1e compo ed of
works of antiquity, ancient and modern history. biography,
cience, variou travels, poetry, Friend' writinl1 , and general
literature. There i a mall cabinet containing interesting and
valuable pecimen. pecimen in geology, biography, mineralogy,

The Literary ocicty holds meeting every week in the chapel.

The outhland ollcg and Normal Institut is the re ult of
growth. In 1864, Indiana Yearly Meeting of the Rcligiou
Soci t of Friend, a corporate body, :ent alvin and Alida
Clark to tart an asvlum, under the direction of the aovernment, •
for the care of colored orphan children, who were collected in
large number at Helena, Ark. In this a ~rlum they were cared

While non-sectarian in in truction, the ch~ol is thoroughly
Christian. The students and teachers are expected to attend
all chapel services. Occa ion ally they attend in a body the
ervice of the different churche in the city. Short lecture on
the Bible, morals, or manners are frequently given by the principal
or some member of the faculty. SUllday- chool is conducted
by the teachers. The students are required to attend.
The Y. M. C. A. is directed by the young men. A Y. P. .
C. E. holds religious services every Sunday evening, and i
attended by teachers and students. It encourage per onal
religious activity and endeavors to help the students to more
fully realize individual responsibility.
LAING ORMAL A]l.TJ) IND STRIAL SCHOOL was founded in 1865
by Cornelia Hancock. Property valued at $10,000. Annual
expenses about $3,000. There were 190 male and 150 female
•
students in 1908 between the ages of si.x and eighteen years.
There were 1 male and 9 female teachers. all Negroes.
The expen es are ecured from voluntary contribution A
