ST. AGNES' HOSPITAL, ST. AUGUSTINE'S SCHOOL; RALEIGH, N. C.
The work of the school includes that of St. Agnes' Hospital and the Training School for Nurses. The building devoted to this feature has accommodations for the
resident physician, head nurse, twenty-three"patients, and sixteen pupil nurses. A group of nurses on the left of this picture, and the

THE Bi hop Payne Divinit and Indu trial chool was
founded in 187 by the Episcopal hurch in Viro-inia.

The chool wa founded in the first year aft r the ivil War
as a common and unday 'choo!' Th in titution gr w to be
an indu trial chool, and had a th olOl1ical department added
after 1878. After the d velopment of t. Paul' Indu trial
chool at Lav,rrenceville. Va. the indu trial department and
general academic department of thi chool was dropped, and it
be ame strictly a theological chool, its object being " to train
Ule young colored men and mini ters to the spiritual need of
their people." It now ha forty alumni in the mini try of the
•
Episcopal Church, scattered over our land from New York to
Florida and westward, in fifteen dioceses.
Throughout the entire course special attention is paid to the
tudy of the English Bible. The students are required to
familiarize themselves with the Bible as a whole and in its separate
parts. The prime object of this department is to enable
the tudent to know" the holy Scriptures," that he may be
" thorougWy furnished unto all good works,"· and be enabled
to preach the go pel, " rightly dividing the word of truth."
The work of the chools opens daily with Morning Prayer,
conducted in the Prayer Hall by the divinity students, under the
direction of the warden. Occasional sermons are delivered by
members of the enior class in the presence of a professor and
the school. Students are expected to attend services regularly
at St. tephen's Church.
The divinity tudents work as Sunday-school teachers and
lay readers at everal points, under the direction of the principal.
Work in mission stations. in the neighborhood of the school is
maintained by the students. The services are conducted and
the addre ses made by the students under license from the
bi hop, as provided for in the canons. This work is under the
supervision of the principal.
