HON. WILLIAM H. TAFT, shortly before hi inaugu-ration
as Pre ident of the United State, visited Raine'
School, and, speaking of Miss Laney, - who i considered
one of the most brilliant daughter of the colored race,
- said to the friends with him: " That a colored woman could
have constructed thi great institution of learning and brought
it to its present state of u efulne s peaks volumes for her
capacity. Therefore, I shall go out of thi meeting, de pite
the di tinguished presence here, carrying in my memory only
the figure of that woman who ha been able to create all thi ..
The School was founded in 1886 by Mi Laney. The
enrollment in 1908 was 26 teachers and 694 tudents.
The property i valued at 43,000. The annual expen e are
$7,000, secured by fees, contributions, and appropriation from
