TillS institution. founded in 1867, under the auspice of the
Presbyterian Church, is devoted to the higher academic
and indu trial education of the Jegroes·.
It is located in the heart of the South Atlantic region, whi h
contains two synods of the Presbvterian Church, having 356
egro churches and 221 mini tel'S of the denomination, with a
number of schools and academies under their care. It is the
object of Biddle Univer ity, named in memory of Major Henry
J. Biddle, of Philadelphia, to furnish the e schools and churche
with intelligent Christian teacher and preachers.
The univer ity property consi ts of eventy acres of land and
eleven buildings. There are four chool of the univer it~·:
indu trial, preparatory. collegiate, and theological, with eiO'ht
COur es of study.
The enrollment in 1908 wa 14 teachers and 177 student, with
19 theological student .
The chool has had a total enrollment of nearly 8,000 tudent .
and has sent out from it everal department 948 graduate ,
of whom 524 have been from the normal and preparatory cOUl' .

President McCrorey ays: "Of an enrollment of 177 tudent

At the Clifton Conference, August 18-20, 1908, Pre ident
McCrorey wa elected a member of the committee of ten edu<.:
ator , to carry out the plan adopted by the onference.
BIDDLE AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL BUILDING
There are four school.,-lndustrial. Preparatory, CoUegiate, and Theological, with
eight course. of study. About three-fourths of the students are self-supporting, paying
part of the tuition in cash and working oUI the remainder. One hundred and .eventytwo
stud~nts, 14 teachers, and 19 theological students, 1908.
