Labor Union so as to allow students to have a part in the contruction
of the building. The men were therefore called off.
and the plan was temporarily abandoned. Claude Hudson,
one of the students, offered to take charge of the work of con-truction,
and do it with tudent labor. The supervising architect
at fir t declined the proposition, but Hudson was finally
O'iven the work. His work passed the inspection of the architects
and won their highe t commendation, and the lihrary
stanel to-day, not only a one of the fine t building in Marshall,
but one of the be t built.
Students Erect the Buildings
The boys' dormitory, which i being constructed almo t
entirel by student labor, wiJJ be ready for occupancy at the
beginning of the term in September, 1909. The fine two-sto~y
re idence of President Dogan, recently constructed, was built
from money donated by tudents, friend , and the Texas Conference.
All bricks used in the con truction of the univer ity
building have been made on the grounds, and largely by the
tudents, and students in the departments of Brick Masonry and
Carpentry have done nearly all the constructive work that has
been carried on for twelve years.
Important Departments of Work
Wiley Univer ity, in addition to the regular course of study
in the literar' department, operates everal line of industrial
training. In the large trades building are taught book making,
cabinet work pyrography, electrical engineering, etc. The
d partment of law take high rank. In 1908, twelve tudent
wer preparing for the mini try. The department of nur e
training has been of a very helpful character, and the modern
two- tory ho pital building, recentl completed, ha been a great
ble inO' to the Negroe of Mar hall and vicinity.
