Miss Harriet E. Giles
Bible Study at Spelman
Miss Harriet E. Giles
President Spelman Seminary, Atlanta. Ga. At Clifton Conference, Aug. 19, 1908
AT Spelman Seminary we have a
Sabbath-school, which all the girl of
the institution attend every Sabbath
morning. They are das ified according
to the grades of the school. Each
girl is required to have her own Bible
and has to be in Sabbath-school every
Sabbath. We study the International
Lessons. Every year Miss Upton and
myself give all the pupils a copy of the
International Lessons, with the golden
text. We also send them to the older
members of the family and to all former
pupils whom we know would make good use of them and
who teach in Sabbath-school.
1any of our girl go out to teach in Sabbath-schools. Many
of them teach in the lower grades, and a great need is for them
to know how to teach. A young girl in the fifth grade 'Hote me
that he had gathered the little children together and was teaching
them the Ie son he had learned at pelman, and he was
teaching her mother and giving her the les on he had learned
from Miss pton. I receive other letter from girl who have
organized Sabbath· chools wherever they have had the opportunity.
They are very helpful to the pastors in the places where
they reside.
Daily Bible Lessons
We have daily Bible lessons, a regular cour e of Bible study in
our school. Each girl is required to bring her own Bible whenever
she comes to any religious exercise. One girl wrote home
and said there were a great many girls, but he was very sure
that if she took her Bible and went to chapel, he was with the
right class. "e believe in religious instruction in schools as
they do in all these 'denominational chools. The Bible is the
fir t thing that our pupil should be taught. Our aim and purpo
e i to reach them morally and religiou Iy and to help them
to keep good home. And as we go into the home of our girls,
we are cheered and gratified at the great improvement we find
in them.
