It was established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1978 to provide challenging educational opportunities for students with special interest and potential in the sciences and mathematics. There is no charge for tuition, room and board. The school opened in September 1980 with its first class of 150 juniors, a sample of the many talented and highly motivated students in North Carolina. The students represent the diversity of background present in the State of North Carolina, yet they are alike in their motivation to achieve academically and their dedication to rigorous preparation for professional careers and scientific leadership. In the fall of 1981 , an additional 165 students from throughout the state entered NCSSM as juniors.
