Doc. !HEB 1 4 ~86 the north carolina school of science and mathematics Office of the Director DIRECTOR'S REPORT TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES June 11, 1982 As has been our practice , the bulk of this report will c onsist of the reports submitted to me by the Assistant Directorr and Deans in the various divisions of the School. They and their staff have worked hard and long, particularly the past two months, to bring the first full cycle of the School to a successful conclusion. The first class of students has gone through the entire process of two years of a superior academic and residential experience. The administrators responsible for the various sections of the report will enlarge upon and clarify their reports during the progress of the meeting. In addition to those reports of the current activities in various divisions, I want to briefly outline the major accomplishments of the past three years using as a reference point the recommendations of the Planning Committee to the Governor, May 8, 1978. These were the basis on which he program of t he Schoo l has evolved. In most cases where the recommendatioms of the Planning Committee have not been followe d, i t is because the realities of the site, the financial resources available, or other considerations of policy established by the Board, or administrative practices developed by the staff, provided substantial reasons for modification of the recommendations. These are relatively few. At the time the recommendations were made the enabling legislation had not been passed, the Board of Trustees had not been appointed, the future site of the School was unknown, and the appr·opriation to start the organization and development of the School had not been passed. Although the following outline is brief and without s upporting appendices, the reports submitted to the Board of Trustees by t he Director over the past three years provide a sequential series of supporting documents to fill out the outline which follows. In addition, I am appending to this report a document which is still in its working stages entitled, "Program Plan for Educational Development " which will, when complete, serve as our master plan for educational development i n the same way the architectural master plan serves site development.
