Box 7598 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA 2761 1 MR CENTER RESIDENT POPULATION PROFILE June 30, 1976 and June 30, 1977 Profile of the Resident Population, June 30, 1976 and June 30, 1977 North Carolina Centers for the Mentally Retarded INTRODUCTION This report presents selected characteristics of the resident population at each of the four North Carolina Centers for the Mentally Retarded on June 30, 1976 and June 30, 1977. Number and percentage distributions are provided for age groups, race-sex groups, levels of retardation, length of stay cateaories and primary etiology (AAMD) categories. Means and median are provided for age and length of stay. Also included is a graph representing population trends in the Mental Retardation Centers for fiscal years 1954-1955 through 1976-1977. SUMMARY AGE - The mean age for the 3,240 residents at the MR Centers on June 30, 1977 was 27.4 years as compared to a mean of 26.6 years for the 3,50A residents on June 30, 1976. For June 30, 1977 the mean ages ranged from 20.7 for Western Carolina Center to 31.5 for Caswell Center. RACE-SEX - On June 30, 1977, white males comprised 40.4 percent of the resident population as compared to 41.1 percent for June 30, 1976. Only 43.6 percent of the residents on June 30, 1977 were females although females account for an estimated 51.4 percent of the general North Carolina Population. /]_ Also for June 30, 1977, 28.1 percent of the MR Center residents were nonwhites, as compared to 23.2 percent in the general population. ZJL LEVE L OF RETARDATION - On June 30, 1977, 57.5 percent of the MR Center residents were profoundly retarded according to impairment of intellectual functioning. [Levels of retardation based upon impairment of adaptive behavior are not available from these data.] LENGTH OF STAY - The median lenath of stay for residents on June 30, 1977 was 11.9 years as compared to a median of 10.9 years for residents on June 30, 1976.
