Troxler N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Requirements for Contestants 1. Must be registered apprentice and in training under an employer/participating employer who has a program registered with NCWorks Apprenticeship. 2. Must be sponsored by a registered employer or Apprenticeship Committee. 3. Must furnish own equipment and a complete set of tools: trowel, level, square, hammer, water can, standard and modular rule, concave jointers, cotton gloves, hard hat, safety goggles with full side shields, and mortar pan. 4. Must wear proper safety shoes (no sneakers) and have safety goggles and hard hat available. 5. Must file entry blank no later than September 1, 2015. 6. Preference will be given to registered adult apprentices until September 15, 2015, then available space will be filled on a first-come basis. 7. Must not have completed apprenticeship training prior to Monday, October 20, 2015. 8. First place winner ineligible to compete in future contests. 9. Contest limited to 25 qualified contestants. State Fair October 21, 2015 page | 7 PROGRAM Wednesday, October 21, 2015 The contest will be a four-hour project and a one-hour written examination. No power tools will be permitted. Troxler N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture Requirements for Contestants 1. Entry forms will be available online to employers by August 1 each year. All entry blanks must be originals. Faxed entry blanks will not be accepted. 2. Must be an electrical apprentice registered with NCWorks Apprenticeship. 3. Must have completed at least 2 years (4,001 OJT hours and 288 related instruction hours), but not more than 4 years (8,000 OJT hours) of training and not have received a Completion Certificate by October 22, 2015, as certified by the apprenticeship program official(s), verified by NCWorks Apprenticeship, and approved by the Contest Committee. 4. Must be in training with an employer who has a program or is affiliated with a program that is registered with NCWorks Apprenticeship. 5. Must be entered in the contest by an employer who has a program or is affiliated with a program that is registered with Apprenticeship and Training. 6. Entry blanks will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. August 1 until 5:00 p.m. September 1. Entries will not be accepted before or after these dates. No exceptions. The date and time of entries will be recorded when received by the NCWorks Apprenticeship. 7. Must furnish own tool pouch and minimum hand tools: 2 pr slip joint pliers; 12” hacksaw frame and blade; plumb bob; level; 3”–6” screwdrivers; safety glasses with full side shields or goggles; small half round bastard file; 2008 NEC book; wire stripper; 10” adjustable wrench; pocketknife; hard hat; pencil; cutting pliers; 1 trisquare; 1 center punch; voltage tester; work gloves; crimping pliers; awl; 1/2” and 3/4” EMT bender; hammer; 6’ ruler or tape; and fish tape, nylon or metal. Battery-powered drills and screwdrivers will be permitted. (No electric drills.) 8. Must wear ANSI safety approved footwear. Steel-toed footwear not required. 9. First place winner ineligible to compete in future contests. 10. Contest limited to 30 qualified contestants. 8 | page 11. Contestants must be registered by 7:45 a.m. to compete. 12. Contestants will be judged on a hands-on project and a written examination. All judging is final. Limitations on the Number of Applicants per Apprenticeship Program Each registered apprenticeship program sponsor/contractor may submit one regular applicant and two alternate applicants. Sponsors must designate alternates one and two. Only the regular entry applicants will be selected for the first 30 qualifying contestants. Registered apprenticeship program sponsors/con- tractors with multiple programs and locations will be considered as one for submitting entry blanks. In the event that a pool of eligible applicants is used to fill the 30 entries, one additional entry per program sponsor/contractor will be selected until the draw is completed, and then the process is repeated until the 30 contestants have been selected. No substitutes will be allowed. Judging Categories Hands-On Project 2/3 of Final Score Neat professional manner, Accuracy of layout and installation, Productivity, Adherence to National Electrical Code, Safety, and Operation of energized system. Automobile Tests The test for these high school and college/postsecondary contests will be comprised of diagnostic and repair content from these skill areas: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic steering, heating and air conditioning and engine performance. Skill Performance The contest will include a series of workstations. Workstations consist of a vehicle and/or simulators, components and service publications. Contest Guidelines 1. A variety of vehicles sold in the United States will be used in the contest. This will include both domestic and imported vehicles. Sponsored by Goodheart-Willcox Publisher. 2. Some or all of the high school work stations may be different than the college/postsecondary work stations. 3. Safety, quality, ability to follow instructions and procedures, accuracy (in comparison with factory specifications), workmanship, and other skills representative of the trades identified by industry leaders will be judged. 4. A total of eight to 15 stations will be assigned. Each station must be broken down into specific task criteria and separate steps based on the task. For example: Station No. 1 Wire test and repair segments Identify faulty circuit = x points Repair condition = x points Assemble/retest = x points Resistor board tests = x points Compare values to specs = x points Workmanship = x points Safety practices = x points 5. The points allowed for each station will be assigned by the national technical committee and will be based on the difficulty of each assigned task. 6. Time limits will be assigned for each task, but no bonus points will be awarded for early completion. Must be sponsored by a registered employer or Apprenticeship Committee. 3. Must furnish own equipment and a complete set of tools: trowel, level, square, hammer, water can, standard and modular rule, concave jointers, cotton gloves, hard hat, safety goggles with full side shields, and mortar pan. 4. Must wear proper safety shoes (no sneakers) and have safety goggles and hard hat available. 5. Must file entry blank no later than September 1, 2015. 6. Preference will be given to registered adult apprentices until September 15, 2015, then available space will be filled on a first-come basis. 7. Must not have completed apprenticeship training prior to Monday, October 20, 2015. 8. First place winner ineligible to compete in future contests. 9. Contest limited to 25 qualified contestants. Faxed entry blanks will not be accepted. 2. Must be an electrical apprentice registered with NCWorks Apprenticeship. 3. Must have completed at least 2 years (4,001 OJT hours and 288 related instruction hours), but not more than 4 years (8,000 OJT hours) of training and not have received a Completion Certificate by October 22, 2015, as certified by the apprenticeship program official(s), verified by NCWorks Apprenticeship, and approved by the Contest Committee. 4. Must be in training with an employer who has a program or is affiliated with a program that is registered with NCWorks Apprenticeship. 5. Must be entered in the contest by an employer who has a program or is affiliated with a program that is registered with Apprenticeship and Training. 6. Entry blanks will be accepted from 8:00 a.m. August 1 until 5:00 p.m. September 1. Entries will not be accepted before or after these dates. No exceptions. The date and time of entries will be recorded when received by the NCWorks Apprenticeship. 7. Must furnish own tool pouch and minimum hand tools: 2 pr slip joint pliers; 12” hacksaw frame and blade; plumb bob; level; 3”–6” screwdrivers; safety glasses with full side shields or goggles; small half round bastard file; 2008 NEC book; wire stripper; 10” adjustable wrench; pocketknife; hard hat; pencil; cutting pliers; 1 trisquare; 1 center punch; voltage tester; work gloves; crimping pliers; awl; 1/2” and 3/4” EMT bender; hammer; 6’ ruler or tape; and fish tape, nylon or metal. Battery-powered drills and screwdrivers will be permitted. (No electric drills.) 8. Must wear ANSI safety approved footwear. Steel-toed footwear not required. 9. Contestants will be judged on a hands-on project and a written examination. All judging is final. Limitations on the Number of Applicants per Apprenticeship Program Each registered apprenticeship program sponsor/contractor may submit one regular applicant and two alternate applicants. Sponsors must designate alternates one and two. Only the regular entry applicants will be selected for the first 30 qualifying contestants. Registered apprenticeship program sponsors/con- tractors with multiple programs and locations will be considered as one for submitting entry blanks. In the event that a pool of eligible applicants is used to fill the 30 entries, one additional entry per program sponsor/contractor will be selected until the draw is completed, and then the process is repeated until the 30 contestants have been selected. No substitutes will be allowed. State Fair October 20, 2015 32 | page The Automotive Service Contest will align with the national SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technology Technical Standards. Knowledge and skill areas will be based on the 8 ASE areas. All equipment, tools and materials will be provided by the contest coordinators. No specific clothing will be required. Scope of the Contest The contest will be consistent with the automobile technician task list outlined in guidelines published by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) at www.natef.org. Contestants will demonstrate their ability to perform jobs or skills selected from the standards mentioned above as determined by the SkillsUSA Championships technical committee. Committee membership includes ALLDATA, American Honda Motor Co. Inc., AYES Inc., DaimlerChrysler Corp., Delmar Learning, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., General Motors ASEP, Hunter Engineering Co., MAC Tools, National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, Snap-on Inc. and Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. Knowledge Performance The contest will include a written knowledge test given by ASE, and will consist of 100 questions covering all eight automobile areas identified in the NATEF Automobile Program Standards and the ASE Catalog of Tests. Automobile Tests The test for these high school and college/postsecondary contests will be comprised of diagnostic and repair content from these skill areas: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic steering, heating and air conditioning and engine performance. Skill Performance The contest will include a series of workstations. Workstations consist of a vehicle and/or simulators, components and service publications. Contest Guidelines 1. A variety of vehicles sold in the United States will be used in the contest. This will include both domestic and imported vehicles. Sponsored by Goodheart-Willcox Publisher. 2. Some or all of the high school work stations may be different than the college/postsecondary work stations. 3. Safety, quality, ability to follow instructions and procedures, accuracy (in comparison with factory specifications), workmanship, and other skills representative of the trades identified by industry leaders will be judged. 4. A total of eight to 15 stations will be assigned. Each station must be broken down into specific task criteria and separate steps based on the task. For example: Station No. 1 Wire test and repair segments Identify faulty circuit = x points Repair condition = x points Assemble/retest = x points Resistor board tests = x points Compare values to specs = x points Workmanship = x points Safety practices = x points 5. The points allowed for each station will be assigned by the national technical committee and will be based on the difficulty of each assigned task. 6. Time limits will be assigned for each task, but no bonus points will be awarded for early completion. Stations and equipment to be used in the national competition will be published annually by April 15 in the SkillsUSA Championships contest updates. NC- Skills USA membership is not required to compete. Cash Prizes will be awarded to the top five competitors. Fantasy theme, hair coloring, hairstyling, haircutting, ornamentation, and use of extensions are allowed. Costume or clothing are the competitor’s choice.
