Description |
Numbered beams in the attic of the plantation house. The Humphrey-Williams-Smith Plantation house, a wonderful interpretation of Greek Revival and Tidewater style architecture, was completed in 1846 for Richard Blount Humphrey on property that was in continuous family ownership since 1772 and remains so today. An enslaved person in the employ of the Humphreys, Daniel, was responsible for a great deal of the carpentry and woodworking in the construction of this house. Note the bee hive motif at the top of the columns on the front of the house. The numbered beams (using Roman numbers) suggest that much of the timber was cut and laid out prior to erecting the structure, indicating a great deal of skill in its construction. |
