EASLEY ANNOUNCES STOKES PARTNERSHIP FOR CHILDREN SIGNS CONTRACT FOR AMERICORPS PROGRAM RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced the Stokes Partnership for Children signed a contract with the North Carolina Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service awarding them $293,666 in grant money for the AmeriCorps and Children Together (ACT) AmeriCorps program. “With this grant award, AmeriCorps members will be able to continue working to improve the lives of people throughout North Carolina,” said Easley. “I am grateful for their service to our state and I look forward to another successful year.” ACT AmeriCorps members serve as assistant pre-school teachers, providing enrichment activities to the children and release time for instructors so teachers can further their early childhood education. ACT AmeriCorps members have the opportunity to earn the NC Early Childhood Credentials I and II and take a college level course in early childhood or childcare. “We greatly value our relationship with the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service and appreciate the grant to administer the AmeriCorps and Children Together program,” said Cindy Tuttle, executive director of the Stokes Partnership for Children. “The grant will help us continue to focus on the need for teacher education and the enhancement of quality child care for children ages zero to five.” More than 40 AmeriCorps members will serve with ACT in Alamance, Buncombe, Forsyth, Cleveland, Henderson, Hertford, Rockingham, Stokes and Surry counties. For more information about ACT, call Brandon Eaton at 336-985-2676 or 1-800-559-5606. The AmeriCorps program coincides with the traditional school calendar. AmeriCorps, a national service initiative funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, is designed to increase volunteering and civic engagement in America. Since 1994, more than 4,000 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs. The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a federal and state-funded agency housed in the Governor’s Office, administers funding for 10 N.C. AmeriCorps programs.
