EASLEY ANNOUNCES N.C. AMERICORPS MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that AmeriCorps members across North Carolina will host and participate in projects as part of National Volunteer Week, April 15-21. Members will conduct canned food drives and deliver food, volunteer at the Special Olympics, and participate in land beautification projects. “AmeriCorps members generously spend their days working to improve the lives of people throughout North Carolina,” Easley said. “I encourage others to follow the example AmeriCorps members are setting during National Volunteer Week.” National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. The theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week is “Inspire By Example.” The following are projects AmeriCorps members will participate in during National Volunteer Week: Black Child Development, Spirit of Excellence, Greensboro: Members will pack grocery bags and organize food at the Food Assistance/ “Groceries on Wheels” of Guilford County warehouse (2751 Patterson Street) from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 20. This agency provides senior and disabled adults with delivered groceries. For more information, contact Aisha Gwynn at 336/230-2138. Child Care Services Association, TEACH Early Childhood Corps, Durham: Members will serve lunch to the residents at the Durham Rescue Mission as well as collect canned food to replace the food that was lost during a recent fire at the Rescue Mission from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. For more information, contact Rodney McClain at 919/688-9641 Ext. 5025. Members will also paint four classrooms at the Steps and Ladders childcare center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. For more information, contact the Steps and Ladders child care center at 919/688-1339. Children’s Village Academy, Project CARE, Kinston: Members will visit residents at the Spring Arbor rest home (3207 Carey Road) from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20. Members will take gift bags to each of the residents, read stories and have lunch with the residents. For more information, contact Melba Lovick at 252/939-1958. Stokes Partnership for Children, AmeriCorps and Children Together, King: Members will assist with the sixth annual Little Folks Festival at Mount Olive Elementary School (2145 Chestnut Grove Road) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.
