Easley today announced that more than 40 Project Heart AmeriCorps members will help provide key services during the Pitt County Special Olympics Spring Games on April 12. The service day is one of many events AmeriCorps members across the state are participating in to commemorate upcoming National Service Week, April 24-28. “I commend our AmeriCorps members for teaming up with another outstanding organization dedicated to improving the lives of our citizens,” said Easley. “As National Service Week approaches, I encourage all North Carolinians to participate in volunteer opportunities to make a difference in their communities.” The Pitt County Special Olympics Spring Games will be held at Junius H. Rose High School at 600 W. Arlington Blvd. in Greenville. AmeriCorps members will volunteer as escorts, greeters, timers and award distributors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12. Special Olympics North Carolina offers year-round sports training and competition for more than 37,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics offers Olympic-type competition in 20 sports on local and state levels. The medal winners from the Pitt County games will go on to take part in the regional competition. AmeriCorps members serving with Project Heart tutor and mentor at-risk students in Beaufort, Edgecombe, Martin, Nash, Pitt and Wilson counties. Members work with students who have been identified by local school systems as at-risk of failure and dropping out of school. AmeriCorps is a national service initiative designed to increase volunteering and civic engagement in America. Since 1994, more than 3,500 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs.
