EASLEY ANNOUCES SMALL BUSINESS LOAN DECLARATION SECURED FOR EIGHT SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES AFFECTED BY HURRICANE CHARLEY RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley announced today that residents and business owners in eight southeastern North Carolina counties damaged by Hurricane Charley in August are eligible for loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration to make repairs. “Federal assistance is essential to people who suffered damages from Hurricane Charley and the tornado that ripped through the Rocky Point community in Pender County,” Easley said. “These funds are an important first step in securing aid to help these communities rebuild, and I thank Congressman Mike McIntyre for his assistance in securing this declaration. We are continuing to work with our entire congressional delegation to seek federal disaster designation for areas that sustained losses from both hurricanes Bonnie and Charley.” “With the financial assistance now available from the Small Business Administration, a foundation for recovery can begin,” said Rep. McIntyre (D-7th District). “SBA has been very positive in its response to our request, and we are grateful for their working with our office and the Governor’s Office. I am also very appreciative of Governor Mike Easley’s efforts to help us every step of the way in securing this declaration.” Due to damage caused by the hurricane-spawned tornado, residents of Pender County and in seven contiguous counties are eligible for SBA assistance. The other counties are Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow and Sampson. Contiguous counties are included in SBA disaster declarations because the effects of a disaster are not always contained within state and county lines. Homeowners or renters will be eligible for loans to repair or replace disaster damages to real estate or personal property owned by the victim. Renters are eligible for their personal property losses. Businesses can get physical disaster loans to repair or replace disaster damages to property owned by the business, including real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and supplies. Businesses of any size are eligible. Non-profit organizations such as charities, churches and private universities are also eligible. In addition, economic injury disaster loans are available for working capital to small businesses and small agricultural cooperatives to assist them through the disaster recovery period.
