EASLEY REMINDS MOTORISTS NOT TO DRINK AND DRIVE ‘Booze It & Lose It’ Campaign Continues Over New Year Weekend RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley is reminding motorists to not drink and drive this holiday season and that state and local law enforcement officers will be out in force this weekend as part of the “Booze It & Lose It” winter campaign. Stepped-up patrols and checkpoints using some of the state’s six breath-alcohol testing mobile units, or BATMobiles, will be held. “I encourage North Carolinians to be responsible as they celebrate the new year and not get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,” Easley said. “The holidays are a special time for friends and family and making smart decisions can ensure that they remain a joyful time. Four people lost their lives in impaired driving crashes last New Year’s Eve and more than 50 others were injured. We do not want to repeat those tragedies this year.” To better enable law enforcement officers statewide to identify and process impaired drivers on site, a sixth BATMobile outfitted with state-of-the-art testing equipment and a mobile magistrate’s office was added to the state Forensic Tests for Alcohol Branch fleet in November. BATMobiles are available at no expense to state and local law enforcement agencies conducting checkpoints, as well as to community groups sponsoring educational events. “I commend our officers for putting this equipment to good use and thank them for their dedication to keeping our roads and our citizens safe,” Easley said. The Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s (GHSP) “Booze It & Lose It” winter campaign runs from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. The GHSP offers the following tips for planning and hosting a New Year’s celebration: As you celebrate • Plan ahead: Designate a sober driver or schedule alternate transportation. • Be aware of your surroundings and never venture out alone. • Make sure your friends have safe transportation for the evening. • Do not let friends drink and drive.
