Michael F. Easley Governor State of North Carolina Office of the Governor Governor's Press Office State Capitol, Raleigh, NC 27603-8001 (919) 733-5612 - Toll Free 1-800-662-7005 FAX (919) 733-5166 For Release: IMMEDIATE Contact: Jill Warren Lucas Date: Nov. 7, 2005 Phone: 919/733-5612 TOWN OF CLYDE RECEIVES FEDERAL AID TO REPLACE WATER LINE Part of Operation Brighter Day, the Funds Will Address Damage Cause by 2004 Hurricanes RALEIGH – Gov. Mike Easley today announced that the Town of Clyde has been awarded $182,450 in federal aid to replace a water line that was damaged during flooding from last year’s hurricanes. The funding is provided by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) as part of the state’s Operation Brighter Day program to address continuing needs from the 2004 hurricane season. “ARC’s support will provide much needed aid to restore and improve water service in this hard-hit community,” Easley said. “The project will make a significant difference to residents and businesses as they complete recovery from the 2004 hurricanes and pave the way for future growth and development.” This is the first award to be made from the $1 million in ARC funding Easley secured for public infrastructure affected by the federally-declared disasters. Easley established this category of assistance last fall to aid local government needs that remain after other financial resources have been tapped. To qualify, proposals also must meet the ARC requirements to create or retain jobs. Clyde will use the funds to construct an interconnection with the Town of Canton’s water system. The new line will extend along U.S. 19-23 to provide a reliable water supply to 57 businesses and more than 1,300 residents. The location of the line along the new highway also will provide water service for new development that is anticipated along this growth corridor between the two towns. The balance of the $607,450 project cost will come from a combination of state and local resources the town has secured for the project. The funds awarded by the governor will complete the financing and permit the town to construct the line. The ARC, which includes all of West Virginia and parts of North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, recently permitted the states of Alabama and Mississippi to establish similar recovery programs in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. ###
