EASLEY REAPPOINTS FIVE TO TEACHER ADVISORY COMMITTEE Raleigh - Gov. Mike Easley has reappointed Melanie Champion of Southport, Noel Grady-Smith of Winston-Salem, Sally Meserole of Wilmington, LaVerne Steadman of Charlotte and John A. Waszak of Chapel Hill to the Governor’s Teacher Advisory Committee. Champion is a physical education teacher at South Brunswick Middle School. She was named Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Sports and Physical Education in 2001 and N.C. Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2000. Champion received her associate’s degree from Peace College and her bachelor’s degree in science and psychology and master’s degree in physical education from Appalachian State University. Grady-Smith is the lead dance educator for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She is a member of the N.C. Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, N.C. Association of Educators and N.C. Arts Education Coalition. Grady-Smith is also a member and former president of the N.C. Association of Dance Educators. She received her bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her dance education certification from UNC-Greensboro. Meserole is a physical education and health teacher at New Hanover County Schools. She is co-president of the New Hanover County Federation of Teachers and a member of the New Hanover County School Health Advisory Council and Wilmington Family YMCA Board of Directors. Meserole received her bachelor’s degree in health and science physical education from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Steadman is a high school pre-calculus math teacher in Mecklenburg County Schools. She is a board member with the Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Education Association, a member of the National Education Association and a judge in the N.C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship competition. She received her bachelor’s degree in the teaching of secondary mathematics from Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. Waszak is a 5th grade teacher at New Hope Elementary School in Hillsborough. He is a member of the American Federation of Teachers, N.C. Teachers of Mathematics, Phi Delta Kappa and former vice-president of the American Federation of Teachers of Orange County. He was named Teacher of the Year for Orange County Schools in 1998 and received the Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2001. Waszak received his bachelor’s degree in
